AIBU to not wee in the hotel kettle?

Summary of events:

  • In hotel room with new(ish) partner.
  • Go to make myself a cup of tea, ask if he wants one.
  • His eyes widen and he yelps 'No! Don't use that! People wee in them!'
  • I have never heard this and say something along the lines of 'What? Why would anyone wee in the kettle? There is an ensuite.'
  • He says that everyone knows you should never use the kettle in your hotel room because people wee in them 'and worse'.
  • I tell him I'm going to take my chances and make a cup of tea (although I boil it out once first to be on the safe side).
  • He looks repulsed and says 'I can't believe you're doing that, that's disgusting, I didn't think you were like that' (basically how I'd expect him to react if I actually did a wee (or 'worse') in the hotel kettle myself.
  • We go out later for an after-dinner walk and he points at a dog poo and says 'look, there's your dessert.'
  • We are getting ready for bed and he picks up kettle and asks me if I want a cup of wee to take to bed.

So, question, in case you haven't guessed: is weeing into the hotel kettle 'a thing' (in which case IABU for making a cup of tea in what is essentially a toilet) or is my partner being weirdly OTT about this? Girls group chat theories have so far ranged from he's an extreme germophobe (red flag) to he's testing my reaction because he's 'into' poo and wee related 'activities' (also a red flag) to he wees in hotel kettles himself (also a red flag).

The only non-red flag is that he's right and people are weeing into their hotel kettles left right and centre which would be a a green flag for him but a red flag for the rest of society. I'm not really sure what outcome I'm hoping for here. Help me out?

I have never heard that people pee in kettles but definitely they cook in them. I always rinse and boil before using and always wash the cups. Aside from that I choose not to thing about the mingingness of people and just enjoy my stayGrin

I’ve also worked in hotel housekeeping. Never found wee in the kettle. But echoing previous posters here - don’t use the cups. In one place I worked we rinsed them out in the uncleaned bathroom sink, regardless of the previous occupant’s whiskers or toothpaste blobs, then dried them off with used towels.

CrownKettle · 30/05/2021 19:51

I’ve heard of it, but I think it’s an urban myth.

I’ve also heard of people washing their underwear in them by boiling it, which I also think is an urban myth.

shakingstevensfan · 30/05/2021 19:51

Urban myth. But I always clean the cups before using them.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 30/05/2021 19:51

Why the fuck would you wee in the kettle?

stuckinarutatwork · 30/05/2021 19:52

I used to work as a chambermaid. I NEVER came across a kettle smelling of wee.

I've stayed in dozens of hotels on business, I have never once done a week in the kettle but I do use them to make a cuppa without another thought! His reaction is bizarre! I'd dump him for the dog poo comment alone.

bubblebath62636 · 30/05/2021 19:55

I've heard from my housekeeping friend that people tend to out their dirty underwear in the kettle and boil it to clean them.

She's found 2 instances in her long career but it always put me off!

KezzabellaB · 30/05/2021 19:55

I've never heard of this tbh. Still going to have a cup of tea in hotels. FWIW I think he sounds extremely immature tbh!

Babbly · 30/05/2021 19:55

I worked in housekeeping - it happens way more often than you'd think.

warmandtoasty2day · 30/05/2021 19:56

i could be around someone with that level of immaturity, what's the deal with dog poo and wee? sounds a bit pervy tbh.

Nandocushion · 30/05/2021 19:57

No kettles in US hotel rooms, OP. Only go on holiday with him to the US, problem solved.

warmandtoasty2day · 30/05/2021 19:57

i couldn't

April does have the 'downlow' on some techniques carried out by some hotel chamberpersons/cleaners - many years ago as a 14 yo with a weekend job as an Hotel Chambermaid (as indeed we were called c1975) I do recall polishing off the baths with guests used towels as well as polishing off any croissants the guests had left (each room had a 'Continental' Breakfast room serviced with an option to go for the Fry, Kippers, etc in the Restaurant).

It is very possible that I may have polished off some coffee cups with used guest towels too, although I don't directly remember, we dumped them in the en-suite sink to soak whilst we cleaned the main room (radio on, drinking sachet coffee, eating croissants).

Many years and room kettles later I heard this wee in the kettle thing and thought thank god I chuck, rinse, refill and boil all these years, because of the dust. As PPs have suggested, I'd determine if BF has actually pissed in a guest kettle or he's just heard this.

I've always given my cups a little clean though.

MayLeaveADentInYourSofa · 30/05/2021 19:58

Never heard of it and would have still made a cup of tea after a sniff test and maybe a boil/pour away just in case.

Mum233 · 30/05/2021 19:58

I have heard this before. I’ve also heard from hotel cleaners about people boiling dirty underwear in them 🤢

Livelovebehappy · 30/05/2021 19:59

I can imagine it happens. Sometimes. But not so often that it would trump me having my morning caffeine fix.

HollowTalk · 30/05/2021 19:59

I think in Premier Inns the thing they drape over the bed (containing the logo) is supposed to be pretty disgusting.

Ditto. I found someone's knickers in a kettle full of water once.
speakout · 30/05/2021 20:01

Never hear d of wee, but I have a friend who uses hotel kettles to heat up hot dogs.

Pinuporc · 30/05/2021 20:06

My main complaint about hotel kettles is that they take an unreasonable amount of time (and noise) to boil a tiny amount of water. I have never considered if anyone might have weed in it.Confused

BillyIsMyBunny · 30/05/2021 20:06

In my late teens I stayed in a budget Travel Lodge with my then boyfriend. He admitted on the train home he’d weed in the kettle just before we left. I was horrified as I’d never heard of anyone doing this plus I’d paid for the room in my name using my card. He was adamant it was a normal thing people did just like taking the toiletries and no big deal. He had a job at a fast food restaurant and claimed he to spit in people’s food so I’m not sure if he had no disrespect for others or was just a liar although suffice to say we weren’t together for long.

Even after this I have still drunk from the kettle at hotels since, although maybe I would be wary if at a budget hotel but I don’t believe this is a common thing and certainly not something the general population would do, especially those who regularly stay at hotels. If you’re at a nice hotel I definitely wouldn’t worry about it.

aiwblam · 30/05/2021 20:07

Most posters on here are lacking the equipment to easily piss into a kettle. I wouldn’t use a hotel kettle. I used to, in the old days, but not any more. People have definitely got weirder since the availability of the internet.

KaleSlayer · 30/05/2021 20:07

I’ve heard of it...on previous threads on here I think. But having known someone who was a hotel manager for many years, literally nothing would surprise me. People do the weirdest and dirtiest things. It really makes me like staying home.
