I don't actually think I'm unreasonable though my husband does!

Americans please tell me about your favourite American meal or snack, or even better, both!

Chesters puffcorn and the muffins and pies from perkins
@ToastTriangles OH MY GOD. Someone else remembers Perkin’s!! I spent so many college (undergrad) late nights there eating chicken fingers!

Reading this entire thread has made me completely homesick. The food is so much better and varied in the US. I can’t wait to visit this summer and eat EVERYTHING.

AgeLikeWine · 29/05/2021 11:34
@AgeLikeWine You were at Smittys Market in Lockhart which has 4 BBQ joints in it. I could wax lyrical about Texas BBQ for hours and like you can't wait to get back over there!
That sounds familiar, thank you!

I’m impressed by the creativity, diversity, and availability of US craft beer. There are great craft beer scenes in various European countries, but if I want something unusual, I have to either find it at a pub or buy it by the individual bottle/can. In the US, you can find a real variety by the sixpack/twelvepack. Just as an example - last trip, my new obsession was 10 Barrel “Crush” Cucumber Sour beer. They also make a bunch of fruit sours - lemon, raspberry, strawberry, apricot, guava - and offer a mixed 12pack of 12 oz (35.5 ccl) cans for under $20 (£14).

Also love:

 • Fried whole (belly intact) clams - clam plate, clam roll, clam roll plate
 • Prawn quesadillas
 • Eggplant parmigiana subs
 • Corn chowder
 • BLTA - (American) bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado sandwich
 • Avocado smoothies
 • Mexican horchata (different from Spanish horchata, which I also like) and aguas frescas (my fave is sandía/watermelon), in big tanks at any Mexican restaurant, even the smallest take-out place
 • Spiced sweet potato pie - had a delicious one at H’s cousin’s house in Massachusetts and was sure it must be home-made, but no: it was from the in-house bakery at a local supermarket (Stop & Shop) and available as a whole pie, half, quarter, or slice.
 • Maple sugar candy - can find good (expensive) maple syrup in Europe, but never candy.
 • Jalapeño jelly and claret jelly (jam)
 • Sourdough walnut bread, zucchini (courgette) bread, cranberry bread, banana bread, cornbread.
 • Utz brand crab flavoured and fried dill pickle flavoured potato chips (crisps)

I love American food. And how totally regional American cuisine is. It's so much more interesting and varied than many people in the UK seem to assume.

squiglet111 · 29/05/2021 14:08

I love American food! Let's see, pretzels from street vender, bran muffins, combos, Cheetos Nik nak type crisp, cheese flavour... Love them! Milk duds. Their coffee and flavoured creamers.... Love them! Breakfast biscuits. Umm, probably more, but will leave it there. Next time I go USA I want to go to a diner and try some American pies, apple, cherry, pecan... :)

squiglet111 · 29/05/2021 14:09

Oh god.... musnt forget Tacos!

@MissConductUS yes I totally forgot the ghirardelli chocolates. We used to keep going in and out of the ghirardelli shop at downtown Disney just to get a free sample of chocolate. We used to buy something of course too.

Taco Bell - why, just why, don't we have Taco Bell in the UK ? Fritos Corn Chips - as above, why can't I find corn chips in the UK crisp aisles? There's lots of snacky. crispy stuff, but no bloody Corn Chips.

I do not understand it.
