I don't actually think I'm unreasonable though my husband does!

Americans please tell me about your favourite American meal or snack, or even better, both!

@AgeLikeWine Southerners in the states put a bit of baking soda in the iced tea to cut down the acidity

EKGEMS · 29/05/2021 00:56

@ShinyMe I've eaten at the exact deli after visiting Salem

EKGEMS · 29/05/2021 01:04

@bellabride Gosh now you mention it I guess I did sound like Forrest

21Flora · 29/05/2021 01:10

@ZZTopGuitarSolo decent cheese is so pricey though! Last time I went to Harris Teeter halloumi was about $15 for a normal sized portion!

Rosieandjim04 · 29/05/2021 01:11

@GyozaPoser

Every year I haul back snacks/salad dressing/cold meds that do something/uti meds. Why oh why can you not get proper UTI meds here I don't know. I haven't had a UTI in 10 years but I end up giving away loads of the stuff.
I buy azo omg why is it not used over here? I have IC and it makes the pain go away nothing else works. I also love apple Fanta, Denny's , Wendy's , Arbys. The salads are so much nicer in the states ours are just limp !!!
MisterT373 · 29/05/2021 01:16

@AgeLikeWine You were at Smittys Market in Lockhart which has 4 BBQ joints in it. I could wax lyrical about Texas BBQ for hours and like you can't wait to get back over there!

MisterT373 · 29/05/2021 01:20

Sugar Cookie M&Ms at Xmas time
Caramel M&Ms
Fruit Life Savers

I'm fortunate enough to have a friend who is a flight attendant for American Airlines who still flies over once a month to London. In the past she has brought me fresh tortillas, Shiner beer and last trip banana pudding from Buc-ees gas station!

When she is coming over we sometimes have a virtual shopping trip to Walmart so I can pick what I want her to bring.

BritWifeinUSA · 29/05/2021 06:06

Cheezits are my favorite. My dog loves them too, unfortunately. I discovered this when I left a box on the coffee table and walked out of the room for a whole five minutes.

Hate American chocolate.

I really love the bags of caramel popcorn with peanuts and caramel bits in that they bring out every Christmas. I can usually make my stash last until February.

Khaleesimotherofratbags · 29/05/2021 06:33

I don't know if these have been mentioned yet but Chex Mix muddy buddies - peanut butter and chocolate flavor. So good!

Mypathtriedtokillme · 29/05/2021 06:36

Maple sugar candy.

BabyMoonPie · 29/05/2021 06:56

I don't think either of these have been mentioned yet: moonpies (love them so much I made them my user name!) and Cinnabon. Cinnabon are the best cinnamon rolls - I tried one because the store in the food court smelled so good and it was amazing.

KarmaNoMore · 29/05/2021 07:00

Corndogs, absolutely love them. So far they have proven impossible to find in the north of England.

gigi556 · 29/05/2021 07:01

Cheese its

AintPageantMaterial · 29/05/2021 07:03

Wheat Thins! American DSD doesn’t understand what on Earth I’m fussing about but I can’t think of an equivalent here and I love them.

lovelyupnorth · 29/05/2021 07:04

Have visited the states loads can safely say the one thing I enjoy least is the food. Mostly fucking awful. Anything chain or snacks. So I can safely say YABVU. I'm with your husband.

phoenixrosehere · 29/05/2021 07:26

Anything chain or snacks.

Of course, chains aren’t going to be great. The same could be easily said about the ones in the U.K.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 29/05/2021 07:32

I’m not keen on too many of the processed snacks etc. from supermarkets, but I do like all the cherry flavoured sweets and the way that the supermarkets (at least the Florida ones) smell of cinnamon in October.

Eating out, I love Cracker Barrel for breakfast. Something for everyone, endless coffee and a shop that is identical in layout to all the other Cracker Barrels. I love that. No idea why.

Breakfasts in general are amazing, and as we’re always up ridiculously early when in America, it kind of doubles as lunch. In fact I want huevos rancheros from the Grand Canyon North rim restaurant right now. Or a burrito from Ruby’s at Bryce Canyon.

Also, biscuits. Not too keen on the gravy, but good biscuits are the food of the gods. I’ll pass on the grits though. Want to like them, but...no.

Hot cinnamon coated almonds from food carts at WDW’s Epcot, spicy cheese filled huge pretzels and pineapple Dole Whip from the Magic Kingdom. They sell the latter in Chester Zoo now though.

Hershey’s chocolate is horrible, but Ghirardelli’s is delicious. We also always come home with a massive tub of acetaminophen (paracetamol) that lasts for ever.

I miss America. Desperate to go back. We have several fantasy road trips planned during lockdown.

UKnowHowUsCatholicGirlsCanBe · 29/05/2021 07:33

Reece's pieces Not the cups the peanut smarties basically.

Caramel apples

Funnel cake

KarmaNoMore · 29/05/2021 07:34

I remember going skiing in the US and all the way from home to there we will be stopping at petrol stations (with a big family there was always someone needing the toilet every 40-50 miles). And all those petrol stations were full of sweets, twinkies, donuts, hotdog machines, nachos and anything that you can imagine but my mother wouldn’t let us eat that “rubbish”.

When DS was 10, we missed a flight connection and after 27 hours trapped in Houston I decided to take a flight 6 to a place 6 hours away from our destination and drive the rest.

After starving at the airport, we drove down and stopped at every single petrol station to have a treat, that we topped at the last stop with a visit to Taco Bell. I’m sure I will not be getting the best mummy award for this but god, it was the best part of the holiday, talking with DS for 6 hours and stopping to eat unhealthy snacks, heaven!

mathanxiety · 29/05/2021 07:39

Funions
Cheezits (when one of my DDs did a semester abroad in London the only thing she asked her sister to bring for her when she visited was a few boxes of Cheezits)
Cheetos (the only snack that kept horrendous morning sickness at bay 28 years ago)
Dill Pickle flavoured Kettle brand chips (i.e. crisps)

Take Five bar
Grasshopper cookies (like Girl Scout Thin Mints)
Swedish Fish
Twizzlers licorice flavour
The glorious and elusive Mallow Cup candy, made in Altoona, PA
Caramel and cheddar mix popcorn by Garret's of Chicago
Lemonheads candy, made by Ferrara Pan Candy Co, Chicago
Haribo Ginger-Lemon gummy candy and also Peach Gummies and Rings - maybe not particularly American items, but I buy them whenever they appear in my local supermarket
Ptasie Mleczko - Polish choc covered 'bird's milk' (vanilla marshmallow) candy

Not quite snacks, but easy to prepare - Jiffy Corn Muffin mix
Also tamales and churros
Italian beef sandwiches, and pepper and egg sandwiches (Chicago specialties)
Kansas City BBQ - in particular Oklahoma Joe's, Gates', Bryant's, Rosedale

FruityPolos · 29/05/2021 07:49

Fruit Lifesavers or cherry Lifesavers. Also charms sweets - hard to find in UK American sweets shops now. When I visited New York I had a milkshake with little jelly prices in, it was soooo nice, I still talk about it over 10 years later!

My other half loves US Mountain Dew, we get a big case at Christmas and I've found the best place to get that now is a French website called My American Market. Lots of other places only sell the UK or European versions.

KobaniDaughters · 29/05/2021 07:52

Moved to California a decade ago and became vegan within 2 years Grin

If we ever move back I will miss Trader Joes with a passion - all their freezer food and the snacks. I love peanut butter stuffed pretzels but now they’ve brought out almond stuffed ones and they’re amazing

Vegan cheese is everywhere now as well and amazing which makes me happy

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 29/05/2021 07:52

Swedish fish! I came home with a massive box last time we went. Thanks for the reminder Mathanxiety.

BlueLobelia · 29/05/2021 07:58

Buffalo wings and blue cheese dip!

I love watching Diner Drive Ins and Dives- what inspired food. I want to try shrimp and grits and biscuit gravy.
