Not served alcohol with a meal.

I'm slightly miffed today.

We went out to lunch. We being grandparents, myself and 19 year old grandson. We booked a table. We ordered a bottle of wine with our meal. They refused to give the strapping 19 year old a glass, because of challenge 25, and the twit did not take his driving licence.

It stupidly "spoilt" a lovely long planned meet up.

Since we can legally buy a 16 year old alcohol with a meal, am I right to be annoyed it was refused today?

A pub chain, if it makes any difference.

Man, that would piss me off no end. Absolutely ridiculous rules.

YANBU.

thecatwithnoeyes · 25/05/2021 18:25

@ChaToilLeam

The laws are ridiculous,

What laws?

BrilliantBetty · 25/05/2021 18:26

Could you have had a glass of wine? Even if he was on soft drinks

Viviennemary · 25/05/2021 18:26

They were being extra careful. He should have brought proof of his age. You could have been undercover folk checking their policy for they knew.

Madre1972 · 25/05/2021 18:26

Well hopefully the strapping 19 year old now realises they’re an adult and if they want to be treated like one in a pub they’ll need to remember to keep their licence on them.

No idea how this could have spoilt a long awaited family get together unless someone kicked off about the staff doing their jobs properly.

Bluntness100 · 25/05/2021 18:27

How did him not getting a drink ruin it? That’s really odd and concerning,

It’s his fault for not bringing his Id. They all know to do it.

sbhydrogen · 25/05/2021 18:27

Oh wait, I thought you meant the whole table was refused a drink (YANBU).

If you got your wine and your kid forgot his driving licence, then that's his problem and shouldn't spoil a meal 🤷‍♀️ (YABU)

SpikeDearheart · 25/05/2021 18:27

I think 'ruined' is overdramatic, bit according to gov.uk "...if you’re 16 or 17 and accompanied by an adult, you can drink (but not buy) beer, wine or cider with a meal." www.gov.uk/alcohol-young-people-law

So as long as he looked at least 16 and the OP was buying, it should have been ok.

StopPokingTheRoyalTitDear · 25/05/2021 18:28

He’s 19. He should know better than to go to any pub without his ID if he wants to drink alcohol. Be annoyed by all means but be annoyed with your grandson, not the staff in the pub who are following the law.

I think the proble is that it most likely started with "he is over 18". Once you the try to do, well he is over 16, you are just not trustworthy enough.
IHaveBrilloHair · 25/05/2021 18:30

Thats a shame but ultimately your Grandson is to blame.
My Dd is 19 and if we're ever going anywhere where she might want alcohol I tell her she must bring ID.
The restaurant did nothing wrong.

littlepattilou · 25/05/2021 18:30

@GingerFreaker

YABU obviously, and I can't believe you have to ask. Confused

I also think it's a bit pathetic that a lunchtime meal was SPOILED because a 19 year old couldn't have alcohol.

It's his own fault for not taking his driving licence.

You seem like the type who will put in a complaint about this, even though it's not the fault of the pub!

GingerFreaker · 25/05/2021 18:31

Some of you guys are funny🤣

One bottle of wine between 6 does not turn any of us into raging alcoholics🙄

Hallyup6 · 25/05/2021 18:32

Why is it so desperate that a 19 year old has an alcoholic drink? I mean, he's barely over the age of consent. If it spoilt your meal, you have serious problems.

Meowchickameowmeow · 25/05/2021 18:33

You let it spoil the meal, that's on you.

Why did it spoil the meal then?
toocold54 · 25/05/2021 18:33

I’m 32 and get asked all the time. If I don’t have I.D it’s my own fault no one else’s. They’re just doing their job.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/05/2021 18:34

It's 16 for beer or wine with a meal and with adults isn't it so unless the young man looks 15, they were being unreasonable.
Was it Weatherspoons?

Did this thread not get the responses you had anticipated?

This. ^

Although, the OP is now trying to take the piss out of the posters on here, and make out posters are so 'FUNNY!' Because she doesn't like the answers she is being given. Wink

simonisnotme · 25/05/2021 18:35

so because you couldnt have wine with your food it 'ruined' it
were you driving as well ?
Biscuit

Natsel84 · 25/05/2021 18:35

Count yourself lucky op that you could still have you drink. 😂.
I once got asked for ID for a bottle of wine in my local supermarket. I showed them my ID ( driving licence). They wouldn't serve me though. I had my stepdaughter with me (17) and because she didn't have any ID on her ? They presumed i was buying the alcohol for her so wouldn't serve me .

MadeOfStarStuff · 25/05/2021 18:35

YABU

If grandson wanted to drink he should have brought ID.

If such a stupid issue spoilt your whole meal then either he was a ridiculous brat about it or you overreacted

ThinWomansBrain · 25/05/2021 18:35

So, son was sooo pleased to see grandparents after a long interlude that he couldn't enjoy it without a glass or two of wine to stem the boredom?

Mamanyt · 25/05/2021 18:36

Your grandson is responsible for his own ID. HE IS NINETEEN YEARS OLD, not seven. That's mighty thin excuse for a "ruined meet." In my world, the most it would get is a, "Pity, Darling, and mind you get that ID sorted out for next time."
