Aibu to be unhappy with this new carpet?

Honestly I could cry. We had some plastering done almost 3 months ago and they made a real hash of it. Finally now we have painted it all and fixed the issues. Flooring got done today. Have been so excited to get home and I have just cried. The grippers don't even attach to the carpets in some doorways on the landing. There's bumps all over the stairs and I'm convinced you can see the joins on every step. AIBU to think this is crap or am I just a serial complainer expecting too much!!

I’m not surprised you’re upset. That’s a really bad job.
Personally, I would make sure I was in tomorrow.

womaninatightspot · 21/05/2021 18:52

My carpet fitter made a hash of the stairs he redid it then I paid. He blamed the people who cut the carpet at the time.

Voomster953 · 21/05/2021 18:53

I’d let them come back tomorrow, just to make sure they don’t scarper, and then before letting them do anything with a wooden floor, calmly point out all of the flaws and ask what they’re going to do about it.

Bumzoo · 21/05/2021 18:57

They'll need to order new carpet. They cut it too short.

Speakuptomakeyourselfheard · 21/05/2021 18:59

I don't think it actually needs to be replaced, as by the bumps it looks like it hasn't been stretched enough. To me it looks like they should be able to simply rectify all the problems by stretching it a bit more. However, I definitely wouldn't give them a penny until it's been fixed, and if you can't be there tomorrow, would tell them you don't want them to do anything else until the carpet problem is sorted.

Kokosrieksts · 21/05/2021 19:00

That’s really bad. Don’t be shy to complain and ask them to fix it. I wouldn’t pay a penny for this finish.

Sally2791 · 21/05/2021 19:03

Dreadful work. Needs redoing completely

CassandraCross · 21/05/2021 19:07

Oh and DO NOT PAY THEM until you are completely satisfied.

BetterThanKleenex · 21/05/2021 19:08

Complain and highlight the fact it's a trip hazard and tell them if anyone trips on it, you'll be seeking legal action. Sounds drastic but a friend had the same situation a while ago and it was the only way to get them to fix it.

Luckymummytoone · 21/05/2021 19:14

I’d be wanting the carpet replaced too! X

Zolrets · 21/05/2021 19:17

Get them back to look at it. I’ve not bought a tonne of carpets in my lifetime but I’ve had to do this twice. Once for a bad fit plus a tear. Once for Lino with a bump. Turned out they had put the Lino over off cuts of the ply underlay THEY had put down! Tried to tell me it was my floor boards Hmm

mineofuselessinformation · 21/05/2021 19:18

I'd also get on the phone first thing to make sure they've received your email - and ask them not to send the same fitters (if you even want them back at all, I wouldn't), and check what they intend to do about it.

Bluntness100 · 21/05/2021 19:20

Usually on these I think it’s fine but that’s proper shoddy work. No payment till they sort it. I’d want that fixed before I had the wooden floor laid, it could be just as bad.

Blacksheepcat · 21/05/2021 19:23

Not acceptable. Tell them to send some actual carpet fitters now.

hiptobeasquare · 21/05/2021 19:27

If you have to write something more formal put use this.

Your rights as a consumer come under the consumer rights act of 2015, they should have used reasonable care and skill. You are entitled for them to remedy it or for money to account for the issue.

definitelynotabot · 21/05/2021 19:37

That's an awful job :( Really awful.

To be honest, I'd want to make sure that whoever in their team did the carpet laying isn't going to be laying your floor tomorrow.

Your complaint sounds entirely reasonable. Hopefully you'll get a sensible response from the company tomorrow.

AlCalavicci · 21/05/2021 19:47

Good god thats crap !
Carpet grippers are meant to ya know grip the carpet not sit next to it.
The bumps on the stairs make it look like they have not used grippers at all at the side.

showmewhatyougot · 21/05/2021 19:47

Jesus that is bad.

Hopefully the owner is honest and rectifies the situation.

CausingChaos2 · 21/05/2021 19:51

That’s awful. I’d be wanting the whole lot replaced. Where they’ve cut it too close to the doorways will always be a problem now.

billy1966 · 21/05/2021 19:52

Absolutely atrocious.

The whole thing has to come up.

I would want them to remove the whole lot of it and get the hell out of my house.

I would NOT trust them to anything further in my house.

That is an unbelievable job.

There is NO WAY that is an experienced carpet fitter.

Do not upset yourself, you haven't handed over money.

Go over every inch of it and take as many photos as needs be.

Do NOT be apologetic!
Be calmly very cross at such an appalling job being done.

I really do not think you should allow them to finish the job.

Who was it that made a hash of the plastering? I see you mentioned it in your email to whoever fitted the carpet. Was it the same company?

Regularsizedrudy · 21/05/2021 19:58

That is an absolutely AWFUL job! What company is this? Also no way would I be leaving them with the key to my house. Did they do the plastering as well and that’s why you mentioned it in your message to them?

Meme69 · 21/05/2021 19:58

It's not great, but the door bars can be fixed, that just needs stretching on properly. The raw edge in the landing is difficult. They can either put a single door bar there (even though is small to tidy it up, or they have to fold it over which will cause a bump but it will naturally flatten over time. Personally I thi k they have uses the wrong door bars - they should have used single ones not a cover plate. That way it would hold the carpet in much better. Bumps on the stairs depends on what the stair is like originally. If it's a winder stair or the stair is uneven this may be better than a raw edge.

All in all, it's not been well fitted, but is all, very likely fixable by a competent fitter.

Meme69 · 21/05/2021 19:59

@AlCalavicci

Good god thats crap ! Carpet grippers are meant to ya know grip the carpet not sit next to it. The bumps on the stairs make it look like they have not used grippers at all at the side.

They have folded it, rather than use a raw edge, this would be OK, but its just not done well.

Whitewolf2 · 21/05/2021 20:03

That’s a proper botch job! Don’t let them do anything else until that’s fixed - whoever did that is not an experienced carpet fitter.
