Or do you know someone that is? I'm curious how many real life people are actually on it.

I'm not a journo, the Daily mail is a shit rag.

OP posts:
FedNlanders · 21/05/2021 16:34

Nope.

More to life than money.

Grellbunt · 21/05/2021 16:34

The irony is that the one of the original reasons for establishing the welfare state was to avoid women being forced into desperate measures such as prostitution.

SimonJT · 21/05/2021 16:34

No, but one of my teammates has an OF. He has a standard fulltime job as well, he has made quite a lot of money via OF and is in the top .5% of content creaters. He has been able to pay off his mums mortgage and has a very hefty deposit to buy himself a home. He also gets around £200 a month from tiktok.

MissScotland101 · 21/05/2021 16:35

Not all women that go into this line of work are vulnerable, sure there are lots but I know a few women that work in different roles within the sex industry and they are anything but vulnerable, one of them gets really pissed off when people class her as vulnerable, she says it makes her feel she is stupid and that she isn’t in charge of her own mind, she is a strong women and takes shit from nobody and is addicted to the money, she has travelled all over the world with the money she has made and she has admitted that she isn’t very academic in the least and so getting a college/university education just wouldn’t work for her.

CardinalLolzy · 21/05/2021 16:36

If you think men are paying £10 a month to see pictures of women in workout gear then I don't really know what to tell you.

Have you ever seen... the internet?

being in a category that makes you vulnerable doesn't mean you can't be a "strong woman" - where did you get that idea? "Vulnerable" isn't a personality type.
CuntAmongstThePigeons · 21/05/2021 16:38

Gosh people are so patronising. You may not want to believe it but YES people really WILL spend a tenner to see someone in their workout gear.

I think men can often get fixated on certain women, so I can believe it.
CoraPearl · 21/05/2021 16:40

I contemplated doing OF but decided against it for three reasons -

  1. I couldn't be sure I would be able to fully protect my identity/hide my face. Nor could I prevent any content from being downloaded/pictures captured by screenshots.

2.I had no wish to promote myself on social media, and in order to make decent money, you need to do this as well as spend time making content/uploading content regularly and engaging with 'fans'.

  1. I couldn't screen who was accessing/buying my content.

No one is saying all women are. It has been acknowledged several times now on this thread that women like your friend are the very privileged, fortunate, 1% of sex workers. She is not representative of sex workers, she is the exception. Women considering this deserve to hear about the non-favourable side of sex work, instead of being bombarded with constant happy stories about how sex workers are all boss babes making their millions.

I hope your friend acknowldges her privilege and isn't partaking in decieving other women into believing that this will be them. Does she do the MLM stuff that has been mentioned here?

HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 21/05/2021 16:42

@Soontobe60 put it much better than I could
"It’s just a shame that people think that they have to sell themselves for money. As for the single mum, they are the main demographic - women who are vulnerable and need to make money to keep afloat.
No judgement on the women who do this, lots of judgement on the society that thinks sex work is absolutely fine and bodies are commodities to be bought and sold."

MrsDThomas · 21/05/2021 16:42

No. I prefer my morals to be intact.

CardinalLolzy · 21/05/2021 16:43

Right, so would you agree that it's not only putting a picture of a woman up, it's generating and feeding a fixation that's part of the job?

TedImgoingmad · 21/05/2021 16:44

@dayslikethese1

The thing that concerns me though is; if sex work is just work (as we are often told) and is getting more and more normalised over time, how long before the DWP compel women to take on sex work as that's what is available to them. I could envisage a future where that happens when you try and claim UC as a jobseeker or even if you can't work a 'normal' job due to health conditions etc.
They won't because:
  1. Discrimination laws would require they put men forward for such work too - and that's never going to happen;
  1. No health or safety regulation or workplace insurance policy could ever cover this type of work.

DaisyDreaming · 21/05/2021 16:45

A friend did it for about a year, she enjoyed it and made some good money but she found a niche

MissScotland101 · 21/05/2021 16:47

Well no it’s not but usually vulnerable people aren’t strong if you see what I mean, she doesn’t go out with abusive men, etc etc and people only consider her vulnerable simply because she works in the sex industry and it pisses her off, and I can see why.

Being vulnerable can offend some people because it’s like they are being called a victim, weak etc.

I’m perhaps not articulating myself well but the main point I’m saying is that not all women who work in the sex industry are vulnerable and let’s face it, the media etc only reports sex workers that are vulnerable, ie addicted to drugs, victims of abuse etc etc, the media isn’t going to paint a nice picture of workers within the sex industry are they, that won’t do at all.

In the UK then I think the majority of sex workers are there doing that job through their own choice, but yet it’s not the stories we all here.

Lala134 · 21/05/2021 16:47

this society is discusting. Young girls being taught all they are worth is to be used for a fuck then discarded for another dumb girl who is ok pissing on the floor and being paid £50 quid for it on OF. Young girls seeing constant sexualised content on social media/TV/music. Women having to look 'fuckable' or they are worthless. Women butchering themslves with BBL, lip filler, etc to all look like some ridicuous caricature posing and taking pictures of themslves all day long admiring themselves. What every happened to humility? Why is vanity and porongraphy celebrated?
I would rather live in a dustbin than sell my body. You are degrading what it means to be a woman, you are ruining sex and intimate relationships. Why do people have no respect, morals or class these days?. If you cannot see how pornography/ only fans/ sex 'work' is ruining society and warpings mens views on women, if you cant see how disrespectful it is to women then you are extremely naive and stupid and to call yourself 'empowered'? you have got to be fucking kidding me. I have every right to judge since those who have no morals and promote this discutsing ideology that women are worth nothing but to be used for a quick fuck and can be bought and paid for and deserve no respect or care. I wish peope would think of how there selfish actions for some money so they can buy a new bag or some other pathetic materialistc thing should think how they are effecting society as a whole promoting vanity, promiscuity, a fake image of women, demaning and degrading women.

Is this friend producing gay porn content?

I am guessing the number of heterosexual men producing content for the titilation of heterosexual women is next to non existent?

MissScotland101 · 21/05/2021 16:48

Hear not here and my last post was meant to be a reply to a PP.

ExhaustedFlamingo · 21/05/2021 16:48

I think Only Fans is just symptomatic of a wider, societal problem.

When you've got women like the Kardashians being held up as role models, it's hardly surprising that we're at this point. It's all about women wearing as little as possible and sexualising everything in order to sell stuff. Does anyone believe that the Kardashian make-up range etc would be successful if they weren't constantly splattered over the media more or less butt naked? Obviously all filtered to within an inch of their lives so they look absolutely perfect.

I'm picking on the Kardashians here as they're so high profile but it's endemic. Wherever you turn, the media is pushing images of highly sexualised women using their bodies to get what they want/need. And women are keen to participate because they've learnt that this is how you progress.

There are plenty of phenomenal female role models out there but they're barely given a mention. Sex sells more than ever before and our generation of young girls are growing up aspiring to these values (obviously a gross generalisation but you get my point).

I'm fairly relaxed about bodies and nudity etc, but my issue is that this is being pushed as the norm, and it's not balanced or healthy.

LubaLuca · 21/05/2021 16:48

A colleague's boyfriend is on there. She says he makes a decent amount from it. What he does would be classed as pornographic by anyone's standards, so she tries not to think about it.

Indeed!

The naivety of some MNers who actually think it's others who are naive is staggering.

Of course some people will pay for that sort of thing. Confused

My friend who does it has quite a following who like to watch him do quite mundane things, ironing, gym workouts, things like that.
Soontobe60 · 21/05/2021 16:49

@MissScotland101

The very fact that your friend thinks that selling her body in order to fund an expensive lifestyle is a sign that she’s a “strong woman”, and says in the same breath that she’s “addicted to the money” in itself is worrying. I wonder, when she was a child and someone asked her what she wanted to be when she grows up, did she reply - sell my body for money?
She wants a certain lifestyle so is selling it to achieve that. Her choice, but empowering it isn’t.
