Or do you know someone that is? I'm curious how many real life people are actually on it.

I'm not a journo, the Daily mail is a shit rag.

OP posts:

I know someone who is. She's making good money.
@Oysterbabe

You spelt "being exploited by the patriarchy" wrong!

Atalantea · 21/05/2021 14:33

@edwinbear

No, and I wouldn’t knowingly be friends with someone who was an amateur porn star. Not my thing at all.
If my friend wants to do that, why wouldn't you stay friends - I know vegans who are friends with meat eaters, which is a longer stretch

sure it would be a bit odd, but if thats what they want to do, not my issue

H2OConnoisseur · 21/05/2021 14:35

I made a long post on another section of MN about the negatives I've observed alongside the normalisation of porn and OF. Here are some highlights:

  1. Men and boys on job seeking/job advice forums for students/adults are increasingly subscribing to the idea that women are 'so lucky' to be able to do something like OF if they can't find a job after graduation. What about the women who don't want to do OF, are they (if a parent), letting down their children by not taking whatever job they can get?
  1. OnlyFans is seen by many now as something as normal as Instagram is, and as a result, I've seen people scroll through it casually at work/school. With this, you often hear (as part of acceptable conversation) discussions about how fuckable and what kind of acts x or y does. When questioned, you get told that 'women objectify themselves anyway' or that something like this is as common as discussing YouTubes as it's no big deal. Is it?

2.1. Porn is 'distanced', OF is not. It's common for men (and internet strangers) to exchange lists of OF creators' schools/workplaces. Apparently you make more when you're not completely anonymous the same way men are more interested in pictures and videos of women they actually know or see day to day. Is this the dynamic you want in your classrooms?

  1. With OF/porn so normalised, a lot of acts that I previously count as extreme (I'm in my 20s) are now 'baseline' as these are what they see on screen day in and day out. Some of these include anal, choking, deep-throating, and spitting. I don't think this is healthy for anyone when these are now increasingly seen as 'expected' in any relationship.
  1. Encouraging women into OF only seems to benefit men and 'established' creators. There's another mantra 'more* women, more variety, cheaper prices*'. There are people that make a fortune off of OF, just like showbiz, but similarly, there are multitudes more who do not. Also, OF operates on a recruitment basis. The more women (or men but let's face it the majority of people on there are women) you recruit, the more you earn as you take a cut of their earnings. What's to stop more influential 'senior' students from recruiting their 'juniors' with the promise of good money which they may not even earn if you look at the average earnings? MLMs are bad enough but as much as people claim otherwise, sex work is not like other work.

All that progress and now women are increasingly sexualised and objectified under the banner of 'empowerment'. Really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

EmeraldShamrock · 21/05/2021 14:37

but seems that lots of people now, can make money from all sorts of ridiculous and crappy stuff on social media.
The woman in the article below is selling farts earning £3000 monthly. Shock
It proves how depraved money is in this world.

Onlyfans isn't the only platform out there, and I work another UK rival of theirs. OF has horrendous reviews from a performers perspective, and from a buyers as well. They don't actively promote sex work, but that's where their main money has come from.

uk.trustpilot.com/review/onlyfans.com

Regarding whether people should choose to do this - it's up to them. Anyone who is frightened of being outed definitely shouldn't do it, but on our site there are many, many performers who are making a good living from it. If you put on 10 posts and just sit back no one will subscribe to you - it's definitely hard work. The buyers are generally looking for a girl next door who will chat to them a little bit. Not everyone does hard core porn - there are just as many doing bikini shots etc.

Some do it for money, loads just as a hobby. One of the more interesting ones I've heard of on OnlyFans is someone who just sits down and eats a 10,000 calorie meal - no interaction, literally people just paid to watch her eat her dinner!

For anyone considering this as an option - do your homework and choose a platform that is supportive and pays up.

@Tabitha005

It absolutely contributes to women being kept as second class, or rather, the 'sex class'. The class that exists for men to enjoy. This is where my issue with 'it's her choice' comes from. Not everything women choose to do is good for women. Further, when pornstars legitimise violent, degrading sex acts, they legitimise them on behalf of ALL women, as you pointed out. So miss me with the idea that those of us who critically discuss the sex work industry are 'judgy' or 'unfeminist'. We are absolutely allowed to discuss an industry that effects all women, regardless of whether they choose to partake in it or not. And if sex work is work, then the sex work industry is open to criticism and discussion, the same as literally every other industry on this Earth.

Further, violent and degrading porn first started becoming popular in the 70s, at the same time that women were gaining the legal right to work the same jobs as men. Men were LIVID that women were being given a seat at the table. They hated having to show respect to women in the workplace, so they would smile during the day then go home at night and watch violent porn of women being 'punished' to release the rage they had pent up during the day. To this day, men still hate seeing women at the table. The most pessimistic part of me believes that this new agenda of getting as many girls/women into sex work as possible is men's new way of keeping us from having a seat at the table. They can no longer keep us pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen, so siphening as many of us as possible into sex work is the new route of ensuring female subjugation and submission. This is very important too, since we are statistically out-performing them in education and the workplace.

Just a thought I've had, haha.

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 21/05/2021 14:37

@sbhydrogen

Some people want to do it though, and that's totally their choice. I don't have a problem with that.

However, if you're doing it because you feel you have no other choice, then that is a massive problem.

But they're not living in a vacuum are they? They are living in a world which tells them as young women that their only value is how f*ckable they are. Yes, they may choose to do it, but this idea that this choice was not borne out of social or cultural influence is misguided.

I hate this idea that sex work and stripping is somehow empowering, if it's so empowering why aren't men lining up to do it?

evilharpy · 21/05/2021 14:37

I know one person who does it to pay the bills and avoid losing her business during the pandemic. She's had a lot of slagging off in local fb groups for it, all from men. Women have been more supportive.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 21/05/2021 14:39

Yes, I know a few people on it including myself.
It's not just adult content as everyone seems to assume, there's fitness channels, cooking, animal care and training, DIY, lifestyle and every other topic you can think of.

Yes I agree. It's depressing. It's just another way to keep us down.

Are you saying people pay to watch you cooking? Why would they do that when there are free videos on youtube?
ThreeFeetTall · 21/05/2021 14:42

Who owns the copyright of the footage?

Grellbunt · 21/05/2021 14:42

I don't agree with it and if that makes me "judgy" I really don't care.

If it affects wider society and in particular my kids then I care and it is my business.

mooongooose · 21/05/2021 14:43

And who are the customers?

I'm not sure what you mean or how this is relevant to what I said? Men and women who subscribe are the customers. Many say no meet ups (on their profile or on Twitter). Has that answered your question?

CorianderBee · 21/05/2021 14:43

I mean it's technically the most ethical porn there is...
Why judge? Who cares?

I want this on a tea towel.

To be honest it is more the purchasers I have a real issue with. It reinforces the idea to men that women are there for them to purchase for their own enjoyment, with absolutely no repercussions. Women can be chosen like a sweet in a candy shop and made to do whatever the man feels like no matter how degrading. Whilst this used to be the preserve of a punter willing to pay for an escort or prostitute, it's now just your average Joe, leader of the local scouts and smiley dad at the school gates, maybe on a lunch break or if he has a spare hour of an evening. It is obvious that this mindset has ramifications for all of society.

mooongooose · 21/05/2021 14:47

Because no woman is paying to see a man have a tug? That's literally the reason. You don't think men would be queuing up to do OF if women were paying, what world do you live in 😂

Of course they would. Some people are coerced. But many, many on OF choose and even enjoy it.

DrawingPins · 21/05/2021 14:48

I don't know if it's on Only Fans, but I know somebody who earns money reading out steamy books. I only know because she asked me to read a bit of Jilly Cooper out so she could copy my accent. Confused

I can see how there's a market though — I was on University Challenge, and you'd be surprised (or maybe not) how many men commented on my voice and appearance on Twitter/Facebook/Youtube. When somebody said they'd pay to hear me read the phonebook, I'm pretty sure it was hyperbole, but perhaps I could have paid off my student loan doing that! It's very much the thin end of the wedge though, I know.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 21/05/2021 14:49

@Mulletsaremisunderstood no, again another huge misconception is that you have to pay to watch anything, many channels are free, just like YouTube but the quality is often better and those who upload to OnlyFans seem to put more time and effort into their videos than those who post to other platforms.

VeryLongBeeeeep · 21/05/2021 14:50

What an amazing coincidence that something being sold to women and girls as 'empowering' gets men's dicks hard Hmm

RampantIvy · 21/05/2021 14:50

Sure, but we're talking about only fans here not a sleazy porn set up

That’s a rather disingenuous remark. Of course it is porn.

It’s interesting that those who knows someone with an OF is apparently raking it in, when average pay is 180$ per month

TBH the girl I know who is on OF is known for embroidering the truth so you may well be right.

Grellbunt · 21/05/2021 14:53

He who pays the piper calls the tune.

You're deluded if you think selling sex gives women "power" over men. Any "power" is illusory and very much at his behest.

WinterIsGone · 21/05/2021 14:54

I know people say it's someone's choice, but many young women just have no idea what they're getting into. I had a friend forty years ago who was a stripper in London, going round several clubs in one night. I went round with her a few times, as a bodyguard. I was just so sad to see the (slightly) older women - all on drugs etc, and a fair few hated men, despite simpering to them during working hours. My friend was so bright eyed and innocent in the beginning - so much so that the manager at one club took her to one side, and tried to talk her out of it! If course, it didn't put her off. It didn't end well for her.

I know someone with the most amazing voice. I would totally pay to listen to her so I believe it!
DrawingPins · 21/05/2021 14:55

And that wasn't a stealth boast about UC — it was more the fact that these people saw me fully dressed, sitting behind a desk, on a programme that's not about appearance and still made comments.
