£700 for a weeks pitch camping in Devon?

Laughingstock91 · 20/05/2021 10:57

We normally go camping in France in the summer and pay about £600 for 2 weeks on a lovely site with a pool in Provence. We take our own camping gear when we go.

£700 for 7 nights for a tent pitch in Devon? It’s basically a field with no other facilities bar a toilet block. That’s for us to pitch our own tent too! Not glamping or anything.

Aibu to think it’s taking the fucking piss? I am so over this poxy plague ridden island today. I know we are lucky to get any holiday but it’s a weeks camping - we save up all year to go to France & love it.

I think that’s mad money

Laughingstock91 · 20/05/2021 11:01

We go camping because it’s normally a cheap option and I do like the great outdoors. I went to Cornwall last year and paid under £300 for a site with a pool and an adventure park. This year it’s just insane - am so cross!

YANBU - UK holidays have gone up at least a third! I think it is an absolute piss take!!

Voomster953 · 20/05/2021 11:19

You don’t have to book it. The tourism industry has been hammered and people are just trying to survive.

Gothichouse40 · 20/05/2021 11:21

That's an awful lot. I'd look for something cheaper. The UK has always been expensive to holiday in and since Covid, yes, some establishments are definitely on the make.

Talk1ngD1n0s · 20/05/2021 11:23

Look at other destinations

Talk about making hay while the sun shines! That is taking the piss IMO, but if people pay it ...Confused

I have found that Nothern England (Pembrokeshire Coast) is a far better option.

reprehensibleme · 20/05/2021 11:29

Absolutely ridiculous - there's recouping and then there's robbery - also, many holiday accommodation businesses have been entitled to govt help during the last year so they're not coming at this from a place of no income for 12 months......

Namechangeforthis88 · 20/05/2021 11:29

You'd get a week in August for a family of 4 for half that at C&C without looking hard.

Surely Pembrokeshire Coast is in Wales not Northern England?
Roselilly36 · 20/05/2021 11:33

Prices are crazy for UK hols of any type this summer, simple case of supply & demand. We aren’t bothering with a holiday this year.

idontlikealdi · 20/05/2021 11:38

I got quoted 6k for a week in a bog standard 2 bed static in cornwall. Good luck to whoever is prepared to pay that/

Laughingstock91 · 20/05/2021 11:39

@Namechangeforthis88 thanks that’s really helpful!

Look somewhere else

Isle of Wight is lovely. I've just had a very quick look- £213 for 7 nights at Nodes Point or £300 for Torness Bay. Both have swimming pools and other facilities.

The New Forest have the sort of basic field with a loo block for around £300 for 7 nights.

Devon and Cornwall are lovely but its worth shopping around.

Dddccc · 20/05/2021 11:46

That is crazy money but we only spend like 120 on a weeks camping for the 3 of us no way would I pay 700

Good god 😱 Pre pandemic I paid 6k for a 5* all inclusive, two weeks in the domican Republic for a family of 4 - during August! Not a chance I would pay that for Cornwall - when I still have to clean and cook! 🤣
TentTalk · 20/05/2021 11:48

Yeah, it's absolutely bonkers at the moment.

I've even heard of some sites cancelling people who booked early and then reselling the pitch at a much higher cost. Unfortunately demand is outstripping supply currently.

We are quite fortunate that we like very basic sites, mainly sticking to backpacker sites (but with an enormous tent, we do look quite odd on the field) and we've got some good relations with the site owners.

Lots of site owners have told us that last year people were expecting a bit of Spain type holidays and the litter and condition they left pitches in was disgusting, so some are trying to price out those sorts. I know some who due to the behaviour of certain people last year are officially closed this year, unless they know you.

queenMab99 · 20/05/2021 11:51

If you join the camping and caravan club, the official sites are usually similar prices to other commercial sites but they have temporary holiday sites, in fields, on playing fields and parks etc. at a fraction of the price, there will be water and porta- potti disposal point as minimum, some times access to showers. we went on one in Northumberland, in the field next to the official site, and it was £12 a night, we had a touring caravan with toilet and shower, but the couple next to us were in a tent and had portable shower etc. Also there are not large rowdy groups, so very family friendly.

baxterstockman · 20/05/2021 11:52

I have paid £600 for a week in a caravan in Devon. I got the website off mumsnet - ukcaravans4hire.com. It's mainly owners that rent their caravans out I think, rather than companies.

We are also going camping for 3 nights in Shropshire....it's 80 quid for 4 of us. Maybe look at camspites in other areas, as Devon and Cornwall sites will know they can take the piss and people will still book.

Laughingstock91 · 20/05/2021 11:54

I am still praying that France will make the green list and we can travel but it’s looking unlikely at the moment.

We paid £175 for a week camping in Dorset this summer. A bit more than usual but not ridiculous. £700 is utterly outrageous

Us too. I've actually double booked us - a week in France and a week in North Yorkshire. and the combined price is substantially less than £700!
thesunwillout · 20/05/2021 12:00

Bloody hell where in Devon?
