£700 for a weeks pitch camping in Devon?

Laughingstock91 · 20/05/2021 10:57

We normally go camping in France in the summer and pay about £600 for 2 weeks on a lovely site with a pool in Provence. We take our own camping gear when we go.

£700 for 7 nights for a tent pitch in Devon? It’s basically a field with no other facilities bar a toilet block. That’s for us to pitch our own tent too! Not glamping or anything.

Aibu to think it’s taking the fucking piss? I am so over this poxy plague ridden island today. I know we are lucky to get any holiday but it’s a weeks camping - we save up all year to go to France & love it.

I am quite angry at people who pay these ridiculous prices for camping and caravan holidays as it will mean these prices will become the norm each year if holiday companies know people are willing to pay them which will mean poorer families who cannot afford to pay those prices will unfortunately never be able to have any kind of holiday.

@Singlenotsingle I do not think £100 a night is a cheap hotel personally.
But agree the price for camping is ridiculous.

colouringindoors · 23/05/2021 01:25

YADNBU. Everything in this Godforsaken country has doubled in price.

That link that tal45 shared looks interesting.

4 nights in a 20 person self catering barn for £700.

If you could find 20 people it's only £35 each a night and looks lovely Grin

TheHateIsNotGood · 23/05/2021 02:25

Fuck. If only I still had some garden or field I'd let you pitch your tent for £250ish.

Alas I now don't have much outdoor space, that costs more than I can affford. I doubt that those 'cashing in' cause of Covid are transferring this to their Employees.

It's going to be Cash&Grab in the SW this year - in 2 years most visitors will be off elsewhere - and many of those that came here because they couldn't go anywhere else won't come back just because they don't like being ripped off.

You can only backpack camp on Dartmoor for a maximum of 2 nights in the permitted areas. I hope people stick to that.

I also had a look at that link out if interest.

That barn has 3 bedrooms. Yes, you read that right. 3.

And they are saying that it can sleep 20.

Sounds heavenly Hmm

Egghead81 · 23/05/2021 07:12

This is one of the bedrooms

I would honestly pay £35 a night not to stay here with 19 others. And for a week? Shudder. And I love my friends and family!

Nichalston Farm in the Gower haven’t increased their prices, neither have Fforest Fields in Powys, or Far Peak in Northleach. We camp with them most years and have bookings with all three again this year and haven’t noticed any real increase (bar what you’d expect usually year on year)

We’re paying nowhere near £700 for a week in each this year, so definitely look around at other places.

When did you book?
mogsrus · 23/05/2021 07:30

£700 for 7 nights. don't go then,basic simple answer

Katkincake · 23/05/2021 07:34

That is ridiculous. More fool anyone who actually pays it.

We have two holidays for that price, a week in north Wales for spring bank & 2 weeks in Cambs & Norfolk for summer (with our caravan, full service pitches).

Love the south west but didn’t even entertain the thought of going there this year, it’s busy enough most summers.

When did you book?*

We booked FF in February, Nichalston before Xmas and Far Peak is a carry over from last year BUT we just did a weekend there, booked last minute and the prices were still pretty much on a level with last year’s.

Egghead81 · 23/05/2021 07:46

There’s no availability now.

I suspect that many saying that their regular places haven’t increased prices booked many months ago. When the situation was unclear.

Now deman is through the roof, those with availability are totally understandably responding to market demand.

I rebooked the place we love back in august. For same price as previous year.

He’s now fully booked but when I had a nose a few weeks back, I saw that the week after mine that had been available.... was being sold for 40% more. It is now taken.

Fair play.

I booked somewhere two weeks ago. Paid an eye watering amount. I suspect those that had done what I did above is booked months ago, will have load considerably less than I did.

Fair play
