£700 for a weeks pitch camping in Devon?

Laughingstock91 · 20/05/2021 10:57

We normally go camping in France in the summer and pay about £600 for 2 weeks on a lovely site with a pool in Provence. We take our own camping gear when we go.

£700 for 7 nights for a tent pitch in Devon? It’s basically a field with no other facilities bar a toilet block. That’s for us to pitch our own tent too! Not glamping or anything.

Aibu to think it’s taking the fucking piss? I am so over this poxy plague ridden island today. I know we are lucky to get any holiday but it’s a weeks camping - we save up all year to go to France & love it.

Have a look at pitchedup online. Loads in Wales (and near the beach) and so much cheaper!

BikeRunSki · 20/05/2021 12:02

I have found that Nothern England (Pembrokeshire Coast) is a far better option.

Pembrokeshire is in west Wales

NoMLMbots · 20/05/2021 12:03

UK holiday prices have more than doubled in some areas. Owners being greedy because people will are are paying it.

I am thinking with the double booking coming on that the very greedy holiday lets etc will have a shocked when bookings suddenly cancel and they are left empty if/when flights go ahead - teach them right too.

Forgetmenot82 · 20/05/2021 12:03

Surely not? Where abouts in Devon?

Beachmum23 · 20/05/2021 12:05

Nope we camped every year but have cancelled our main holiday this year and book a static instead due to the massive price increase.

Campsites really missed out here they could have shown people how cheap and nice it is to holiday in Devon compared to abroad. Yet most have doubled their prices.

Bizarrely I live in Devon and the local news is full of complaints about people now cancelling to go abroad

Laughingstock91 · 20/05/2021 12:10

Not going to say exactly where but it’s North Devon so lovely area but still WAY too expensive

Croyde is North Devon and so overpriced. If it is Croyde look at elsewhere - it's not the best location IMO

There are better areas in North Devon though but everyone knows 'Croyde' so tends to book up quickly.

poorbuthappy · 20/05/2021 12:14

We've paid £180 for Mon to Fri in North Devon in Whitsun for our tourer.
And £650 for 1 week in Cornwall in August - but the week in Cornwall 2 years ago was £550 so the prices have gone up, but the site has all the facilities inc a pool / bar / good shop / surf hire stuff etc

AdobeWanKenobi · 20/05/2021 12:14

People have long memories. When this is all over and life returns to normal the £700 a week sites might just find that 'making hay whilst the sun shines' doesn't lead to a lot of goodwill or returning holidaymakers.

freakyfridays · 20/05/2021 12:15

It's not taking the piss, it's supply and demand.

If they find enough people to keep them fully booked, they would be mad to lower their prices! Good for them, they are a business, not a charity.

Another reason to go away this summer if you ask me.

When you look for a job, you don't try to give "good value" to your employer, do you? You try to negotiate the best salary and package you can possibly get! Why wouldn't you?

It really annoys me when people resent business for charging prices they find too high. Vote with your feet, if the prices really ARE too high, they won't have any takers and will lower them. If they sell, that means it's fine.

AnyFucker · 20/05/2021 12:16

Absolutely shameless profiteering

VestaTilley · 20/05/2021 12:17

I wouldn’t pay that, not for camping in a field that’s not even a proper site.

Look elsewhere; there are thousands of camp sites in the U.K.; keep looking until you find one. Snowdonia, Dorset, Somerset and the Peak District ought to be a lot cheaper.

freakyfridays · 20/05/2021 12:17

People have long memories.

They really don't.

There was a lot of anger against local businesses who didn't respect the rules, stayed opened when they should have shut etc.. and promises never to use them again.

A handful of people might remember, but said businesses have never been so busy despite everywhere else reopening too!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/05/2021 12:17

there's recouping and then there's robbery

Quite Hmm Worse still, people will remember this, and while they may cash in this year there'll be plenty who won't even consider a British holiday in future

freakyfridays · 20/05/2021 12:18

no, it's called business. You are confusing them with a charity.
Laughingstock91 · 20/05/2021 12:18

@freakyfridays sorry but £700 for a camping pitch for a week is massively exploiting the current situation. And as usual exploiting families who just want a week away with their kids. I bet the same place is 1/3 of the price when it’s not school holidays

OP posts:
Laughingstock91 · 20/05/2021 12:20

@Puzzledandpissedoff quite. There’s a reason we normally go to France. Cheaper, better sites, better weather.

arethereanyleftatall · 20/05/2021 12:20

It's supply and demand. Any business anywhere, any time, will charge what people will pay. I'll stay at home this year. I'm afraid, op, that I rather suspect the French campsites will also up their fees of the demand is there.

Meghansego · 20/05/2021 12:21

You would be better going through the camping and caravan club.

ladymalfoy45 · 20/05/2021 12:22

£325 for 3 weeks in August with electricity. Lizard.

How is that exploiting?

If you don't want to spend that (and I wouldn't...), just .. don't.

Go elsewhere, do something else, take the kids out of school holidays when the prices are lowered - again, because the demand is lower...

If no-one books at that price, the rates will go down!

Tal45 · 20/05/2021 12:24

That is stupid. If you're not bothered on facilities at all but want to be right on the beach in south Devon this place is very cheap and gorgeous. We've stayed and it is basic, just depends what you want.

CheerfulCervix · 20/05/2021 12:24

That's ridiculous. I'd rather stay at home!

ifonly4 · 20/05/2021 12:25

We're staying on a lovely looking site in August, £30 per night (have previously paid £12-34 in August). Admittedly it's inland but in a quiet spot within walking distance to a well known and popular tourist village.

I'd have a look at UKcampsite and Pitchup.

SwimBaby · 20/05/2021 12:26

That’s crazy money but I’m not surprised after reading another thread about what people are paying to stay in cottages and other self catering accommodation this summer. Prices in the Uk are so high this year.
