£700 for a weeks pitch camping in Devon?

Laughingstock91 · 20/05/2021 10:57

We normally go camping in France in the summer and pay about £600 for 2 weeks on a lovely site with a pool in Provence. We take our own camping gear when we go.

£700 for 7 nights for a tent pitch in Devon? It’s basically a field with no other facilities bar a toilet block. That’s for us to pitch our own tent too! Not glamping or anything.

Aibu to think it’s taking the fucking piss? I am so over this poxy plague ridden island today. I know we are lucky to get any holiday but it’s a weeks camping - we save up all year to go to France & love it.

£100 a night? How many people? I've just paid £20 (its £10 per adult £6 per child and £5 per dog on the site I booked plus £5 per car (no charge for motorcyclesGrin)

Haven etc are more because of the entertainment passes the highest ive seen is £45 for National trust area camping in the Peak District

motogogo · 20/05/2021 12:53

Look at Pembrokeshire is my suggestion

myBumJuiceSmellsLikeRoses · 20/05/2021 12:54

The same holiday I took in Cornwall 2 years ago for £370 is quoting me over £2000 this year. I'm staying at home.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/05/2021 12:54

True, Wales is wet.
A thank you to campers though, who come to Wales on holiday in an ethical way, rather than renting a former home turned into a holiday let, or buying a bloody second home.

motogogo · 20/05/2021 12:56

(Is thinking of renting her back garden and spare rooms out Grin)

Seriously just stay at home crazy!

QuiltingFlower · 20/05/2021 12:57

The clue is in......’We normally go.....”

We are not in normal times.

If you can manage to stay at home and save your money, you will get better value at some future point.

freakyfridays · 20/05/2021 12:59

Those who think they can let out their field or pokey caravan for that type of money will also be wrong.

I guarantee you the weather will make a huge difference.
Restrictions, another "heat wave", everywhere fully booked... things WILL go.

On another note, I never understood camping holidays being described as "cheap holidays". Once you add the equipment, the rentals and the faff... I am sure I've been on lovely holidays in the sun abroad for less than people spend on camping, by using airBnBs and various rentals.

Laiste · 20/05/2021 12:59

We've booked:
Dorset,
sea view cottage near tourist destination beaches,
sleeps 6 (so £160 per adult)
all mod cons. parking, garden, ect
1 week this July,
£1000.

This cottage is only about £100 more than it was last year. Not everyone is taking the piss.

However this July week we've booked up was the last week available when i had a quick look in February Shock Wow you had to get in quick this year!

freakyfridays · 20/05/2021 13:01

I have a problem with people who accepted bookings, then cancelled in order to re-advertise for more.

That's being an arsehole.

Being upfront from the start about the price? No issue with that, take it or walk away, it's up to you.

Fairyliz · 20/05/2021 13:02

Tbh I’ve always found holidays in the U.K. expensive. Yes the basis holiday cost might have been cheap but when you add in eating out plus entertainment in the rain it works out more than going abroad.

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 20/05/2021 13:02

The world and his cockapoo are going to be in Devon and Cornwall this summer. Soon you'll need to reserve an ice-cream a week in advance.

I'd look somewhere else.

SoddingWeddings · 20/05/2021 13:02

Bunch of piss takers. I'm an avid camper, and that's insane.

Highly recommend you look at St Just Rugby Club on Facebook - they are a small campsite, bar, shower / toilet block, but in a beautiful part of West Cornwall. And cheap as chips.

Laughingstock91 · 20/05/2021 13:05

Looking at Snowdonia at the moment! I am from south wales so tend to avoid holidaying at 'home' in wales as I am there a lot anyway but hey, its gods own country and all that...

Babyroobs · 20/05/2021 13:06

that's crazy . we have only paid £900 for a cottage in cornwall including taking dog etc.

Blossomtoes · 20/05/2021 13:07

@Voomster953

You don’t have to book it. The tourism industry has been hammered and people are just trying to survive.
This. People are so desperate for a holiday, they’ll pay anything. It’s called market forces.
AgeLikeWine · 20/05/2021 13:08

So don’t book it then, and go somewhere else instead. Problem solved. 🤷🏻‍♀️

LeilaLiesLow · 20/05/2021 13:08

@Timeforabiscuit

Talk about making hay while the sun shines! That is taking the piss IMO, but if people pay it ...Confused

I have found that Nothern England (Pembrokeshire Coast) is a far better option.

Has Wales moved to northern England?
museumum · 20/05/2021 13:09

We are paying £300 for two weeks camping in Scotland (over two different sites - one beach, one mountain/forest). Obviously it won't be as warm as Devon but it's no further away than France and the sites and scenery are spectacular.

An0n0n0n · 20/05/2021 13:10

How much is a nearby caravan or alternative accommodation for that week?

Ionacat · 20/05/2021 13:11

I’ve just a quick look as we’re off to N Devon camping and it was usual price. The campsite we stayed at last year in South Devon is still showing availability and around £360 for the week and you get free entry into an attraction for the week too. It is inland though.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 20/05/2021 13:11

I got a whole house for a week for that!

UserAtRandom · 20/05/2021 13:12

We're paying £900 for a (nice) self catering cottage in Devon in August.

I assume the campsite must have loads of onsite facilities/activities or something?

felineflutter · 20/05/2021 13:18

I am paying £140 on a country estate in Suffolk. They have a lovely cafe and pizza oven etc, bike rides straight into the forest. I wouldn't touch Devon and Cornwall.

One site in Cornwall wanted £800 and no rebooking etc if Covid restricted travel so you would basically lose all your money.

RaiseTheBeastie · 20/05/2021 13:19

I work in tourism. I could have doubled my prices this year and filled my bookings still. However I refuse to do that because it's taking the piss. And I know it would be an insult to my regular customers. We're not all arseholes

More fool you.

Adjusting your prices to reflect demand is just good business sense. If you see that as being an arsehole then you're way too personally involved.

Although your regulars might love you, you're unlikely to have a very profitable business long term.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 20/05/2021 13:20

£700 to CAMP?

Complete madness. Someone will pay it though Angry
