A member of the household had covid symptoms but the test came back negative. DS(5) now has caught the cold and has a cough and the school are asking for a test. I don't want to get him tested as I know it's a cold but aibu or are the school?

@ViciousJackdaw that's exactly it. I wasn't expecting to have to explain that people sometimes use capital letters to provide emphasis in written text, but it's amazing what people seem to need help with.

ihavenoidea20 · 19/05/2021 17:33

nephew only had a very slight cough & tested positive. Always better to be cautious.

Ednadidit · 19/05/2021 17:33

Please could you just get home tested because teachers like me don’t get a choice over whether we share air with children who ‘just have a cold’ five days a week? Bit of thought for others wouldn’t go amiss.

RuthW · 19/05/2021 17:36

My dd had that cold and tested positive

insancerre · 19/05/2021 17:38

Yabu
He has one of the symptoms, a cough and should be tested

How do people still not understand this?

A child in my DD’s year group wasn't feeling great. Parents still sent him in because it was ‘just a cold’. The whole family were asked to test and isolate and they decide they were above the rules. Because of their lack of respect for the wider community, a year group of over 100 children got sent home. I can't believe people STILL question this. Keep him off for the full isolation period if you like OP but like it or not your decision doesn't only affect your family IF he was positive, there are people out there who have tested negative incorrectly, but at least they have done their best. The school are protecting everyone within it, if you cant see that then there's nothing else to say.

Baker90 · 19/05/2021 17:51

2 year old had a slight temp. Knew it was a cold as she was very snotty. Still did a test so she could return to nursery when she was up to it. It wasn't ideal, but Its the rules right now, and at the end of the day symptoms do present differently in different people so I'd rather not risk passing it on to 15 odd other households and minimum if it was. Best to be safe than sorry.

@osbertthesyrianhamster

No one gets colds, allergies or hayfever anymore. Just test yourself and send that in.
Or just do it properly and don't be a dick, like in this example.
Sarcobaleno · 19/05/2021 17:53

Someone I know had thus situation. They had their son tested but sent him into school while waiting for results because they "knew it was a cold". He was positive. Many more kids then forced to isolate.

Spekoppar · 19/05/2021 17:53

You don’t know, or if you do you really should offer out tour COVID sniffing out skills to science. Yes, highly likely it is the same cold as a family member, but as he has one of the three symptoms he needs a test.

What does this garbage even mean? How utterly stupid can you get?
tinytemper66 · 19/05/2021 17:59

Excuse my language but for fuck's sake...get a bloody test. How selfish are you?

What?

Talk about selfish.

VeganCheesePlease · 19/05/2021 18:07

I understand you're annoyed but I think the school is right. You can't know it's a cold and as the majority of otherwise healthy people will feel only a mild cold (our household was exposed early last year and honestly I only had a mild cold) they do need to be super safe.

EasterEggBelly · 19/05/2021 18:07

and has a cough
He needs a test.

Sweettea1 · 19/05/2021 18:10

how do you know he caught the cold and not covid? He's in school so therefore mixing with other children one could possibly have it with no symptoms and passed it on. School have duty of care for all the children and everyone knows you have to get tested or isolate if showing signs.

TicTacHoh · 19/05/2021 18:12

DH, myself and kids had colds, (no fever or cough). All got tested as requested to confirm it was just a cold; turned out it was COVID. There’s a reason the school is asking.

LolaSmiles · 19/05/2021 18:15

What a stupid suggestion.
Anyway, if he only has a cold then there's no harm getting a test and having the negative result.

Scarlettpixie · 19/05/2021 18:37

Seriously OP? Seriously?

He needs a test.

The vast majority of lumps people find are harmless - should we start telling them not to bother getting them checked out because there’s only a small chance it could be something serious?
Pinkblueberry · 19/05/2021 18:45

Why is this such a big deal - it’s not like it was a few months ago where trying to get a testing slot was a huge faff. It’s so easy now to get a test, many people do them twice weekly for work and you can pick one up at a pharmacy. There’s no excuse to not get a test, stop being needlessly difficult.

OldEvilOwl · 19/05/2021 18:55

Just test him, its not a big deal

StCharlotte · 19/05/2021 19:00

One of my colleagues had a cold. Fifteen cases of Covid later...

The reason is the cough.
