A member of the household had covid symptoms but the test came back negative. DS(5) now has caught the cold and has a cough and the school are asking for a test. I don't want to get him tested as I know it's a cold but aibu or are the school?

@Chasanddive

I thought kids could go to school if they had a runny nose? But not any of the other symptoms? Correct me if I’m wrong
That makes sense because a runny nose isn't a symptom of CoVid. However a cough can be so I can understand why the school would want the OPs child to be tested.

You are not wrong. It's not relevant though. The child has a cough.

at a primary school in our town 19 (I think?) across 3 year groups tested positive teaching staff & children. £ year groups are off, isolating & get checked & they are doing mass testing for families at the school. We are NOT in any of the areas that are mentioned on media who are affected. (A factory close to the town has had an outbreak & the workers probably live in the town)
Your son's apparent cold might still be covid & be caught from school
Apparently (gossip says) a mum sent in her 3 dc after she tested positive.

MiloAndEddie · 19/05/2021 16:24

When I had COVID I had very minimal symptoms and wasn’t unwell at all initially.

School are within their rights to ask, you don’t have to oblige but he’ll have to isolate instead

dreamkitchenhelp · 19/05/2021 16:26

Selfish.

CarrieBlue · 19/05/2021 16:28

It’s not the school who are BU....

Jennyfromtheculdesac · 19/05/2021 16:33

@tracker222

Actually I don't think YABU.

The rules are to take a test if you have a new continuous cough, not if you just have a cough!

My DS has had numerous colds over the winter and his school have never expected him to take a test.

Do you even know what a continuous cough is? Most coughs associated with colds fit the bill, but since covid often presents with cold-like symptoms it’s impossible to tell with certainty one from the other (as many on this thread and others will attest to).
LondonJax · 19/05/2021 16:38

You really can't tell if a 'cold' (or Covid or any other bug) has been caught from one particular person. Look at tummy bugs. DS has been to school where they were dropping like flies from vomiting and he got nothing. So just because someone with a cold didn't have Covid doesn't mean it's the same thing.

A girl in our school was telling me that her dad became ill over Christmas with Covid. Mum didn't get it and she, the girl, had no symptoms but mum got her tested anyway. It came back positive. She was absolutely fine all the way through it - the cough developed but no other illness. Her dad went into hospital for a week. You can't tell with Covid.

So your choice is to prove the school wrong (or right) and test or the school will insist on isolation. You don't have any other choice but those two.

nancywhitehead · 19/05/2021 16:41

You don't know it's a cold. You THINK it's a cold, because another family member has had a negative Covid test.

Please use your brain. Your child might not have caught whatever he has from your family member, he might have caught it from somewhere else. Just because he doesn't have a fever doesn't mean it's not Covid - we all know that Covid is not as bad in children so could very well come across as being mild or just a cold.

Just test him. It's not going to harm him to have a test. If he doesn't have a test and does have Covid then he could pass it to other children who could pass it onto their relatives, etc. This is how this thing spreads, when people think they "know" things that they actually do not.

Doris86 · 19/05/2021 16:44

Just get a test done and move on with your life. Why wouldn’t you?

Chasanddive · 19/05/2021 16:46

My apologies, i never read it properly, I was distracted with my kids fighting. Of course the op has to get her child tested or isolate. Stupid asking really.

frumpety · 19/05/2021 16:50

School are not being unreasonable to ask you to get DS tested. You wouldn't be unreasonable to self isolate with him at home for 10 days if you would rather not have a test. Choice is yours.

Fitforforty · 19/05/2021 16:55

FFS. The rules have been clear for 14 months. Just how do people not understand them?! Your child has a symptom which means he and the results of the family need to isolate or you can get him tested. It’s inconvenient but the aim is to stop Covid spreading.

Is there a difference between global pandemic and GLOBAL PANDEMIC?

None whatsoever. Perhaps Puntastic has typed the words in capitals to assist those who have problems with reading and absorbing information? Looking at this thread, it would seem this is more common than I thought.

MrMeSeeks · 19/05/2021 16:58

Ffs no wonder we can’t get out of this!!
Good on the school.
Go get him tested or all bloody self isolate.
Stop being ridiculous you have no idea if it’s ‘just a cold’.

MrMeSeeks · 19/05/2021 17:00

Dear. God.

anniegun · 19/05/2021 17:06

Get him tested. Your attitude has contributed to this pandemic

Chickychickydodah · 19/05/2021 17:08

My grandson is being tested in the morning. A few kids at school have been tested and the lady at 119 said there arelots of colds going round. He has Asd so god help us and the person attempting the test 😩

Pumpkinstace · 19/05/2021 17:16

My daughter had 'just a cold'

Snotty nose etc.

Was covid. She was in isolation for her birthday.

Don't be a dick, do the test.

babbaloushka · 19/05/2021 17:18

Why not just test him?

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/05/2021 17:20

Why wouldn’t you test

If someone had one of the 3 main symptoms they test

which you child does

LakieLady · 19/05/2021 17:27

Ffs, why are some people so incapable of doing what's in the public interest? And on the very day that it's been suggested by Neil Ferguson that the proposed easing of restrictions on June 21 may be in doubt, and the number of cases of the Indian variant has risen by 30% in 2 days, people are still whingeing on about having to test or isolate a child.

At this rate, we'll be in fucking lockdown until 2025.

LolaSmiles · 19/05/2021 17:30

It's been a while since we had a 'why should i/my child get tested because I know it's just a cold' thread.
Have symptoms, get tested. It might be covid, it might be a cold. Just do the test.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 19/05/2021 17:31

No one gets colds, allergies or hayfever anymore. Just test yourself and send that in.
