A member of the household had covid symptoms but the test came back negative. DS(5) now has caught the cold and has a cough and the school are asking for a test. I don't want to get him tested as I know it's a cold but aibu or are the school?

Huh? Why is everyone saying he has symptoms?? Did I miss where OP says he has a cough??

Yes you did. OP says in her first post that he has a cough.
Moulesvinrouge1 · 19/05/2021 13:55

Just get a test! I expect as you are asking this question you are not actually a scientist. Just get off Mumsnet and get your coughing kid tested Smile

Mamadothehump · 19/05/2021 13:55

Do you really not know how this works by now? Just get him tested so he can go to school. Who by the way, are following the correct protocols. How are they to know it's just a cold?? Hmm

maddening · 19/05/2021 13:56

Just do a test, it really is not that hard for peace of mind surely.

Yes. Yes, she did.

I kept all three of mine off school on Monday because the youngest had a cough. Took him to be tested. All clear given in time for them to all go back to school yesterday. If one of the older two comes down with a cough, we’ll do the same again. They all go to different places and activities, have contact with other people. One of us being in the clear doesn’t necessarily clear the others.

In a child cold symptoms can be covid symptoms. Without a test you can not be sure

MinnieMountain · 19/05/2021 13:58

Unless you have a lab yourself at home, you can’t say for certain that it is the same thing.

I understand it’s annoying- we’ve just had to isolate for 24 hours awaiting test results- but the rules are clear.

Gymsmile21 · 19/05/2021 14:00

I don’t like testing my child if I’m honest and would try to avoid it but if the school asks then there isn’t anything you can do.

It’s more the school need it down that a test has taken place and was negative.

My child has been coughing at school for 3 weeks but allowed to stay due to her having a test and it being negative. She has a cold

idontlikealdi · 19/05/2021 14:01

You have no idea what it it is. Just do the test.

CrazyCatLazy · 19/05/2021 14:09

@springblossom2

I don't want to get him tested as I know it's a cold Hmm

If it was that easy to tell, maybe this corona virus thing wouldn't have spread so much.

Exactly this. I can’t understand how this is still being asked 14m after the first lockdown
ForThePurposeOfTheTape · 19/05/2021 14:11

You are unreasonable.

Outside the UK cold symptoms eg tummy upsets are a sign of Covid especially in kids.

Harleyhut · 19/05/2021 14:11

COVID presents in different ways. Although cough, temp, loss of taste/smell are the key symptoms it can also present as a mild cold/flu. Especially in children it’s been shown to not always present the same as in adults.
Your child should get tested and everyone in the house isolate until results are back.

Northernsoullover · 19/05/2021 14:14

How do you know its THE cold and not a covid infection from school. You don't.

Plumbear2 · 19/05/2021 14:18

You need to get him.tested. the school need the results to know if they have to isolate his bubble or not. Are you really this selfish?

GreyhoundG1rl · 19/05/2021 14:20

Oh fgs, op Hmm

HarrisMcCoo · 19/05/2021 14:20

Now I pre- empt it and book test before calling nursery 🤷 to say they will be absent due to coughing fits. Both negative result but best to be on safe side. This happened for us yesterday.

Whattodoffs · 19/05/2021 14:21

I thought I had a cold - 3 days later got tested and came back positive! 2 weeks of feeling like utter shite then followed!

NotAnotherPushyMum · 19/05/2021 14:21

Seriously? Over a year later and people still don’t get this? Just do the test if he has a new persistent cough. This is one bit of advice that hasn’t changed multiple times. School are just following the guidance.

HarrisMcCoo · 19/05/2021 14:21

Best not to be selfish and not just think of yourself and your own family. This virus has an impact on everyone.

Thisnamewasnttaken123 · 19/05/2021 14:23

Yabu

HarrisMcCoo · 19/05/2021 14:23

Yes it's a nuisance, ruins your whole day, but it is what it is. Many going through this each day.

Chloemol · 19/05/2021 14:25

Just get him tested. You think it’s a cold, it maybe a cold, but the school who have a duty of care to all children there have asked for a test, so just do it

HarrisMcCoo · 19/05/2021 14:27

Inconsiderate children getting coughs and colds 🙄
