A member of the household had covid symptoms but the test came back negative. DS(5) now has caught the cold and has a cough and the school are asking for a test. I don't want to get him tested as I know it's a cold but aibu or are the school?

@Brokensharted

No child of mine has had or will be having any test.
Which is why isolating is an alternative.
Confusedandshaken · 19/05/2021 15:33

What's the problem with having him tested? It will satisfy the school and give other parents peace of mind.

There's always a chance that the family member with symptoms had a false negative test result and does actually have Covid. Have you thought about that? Was it another child and did they test themself or di you do it?

It’s irritating, we’ve just been through this. Ds caught a cold and developed a cough. I got him tested as we couldn’t be 100% certain it wasn’t covid. Results were back overnight so he went back to school the next day. So only caused one day of inconvenience. Unfortunately this is what we have to do, and by doing it you are protecting your community. How awful would you feel if it did turn out to be covid and he mixed at school putting unvaccinated staff at risk. Just get a test.

NewMatress · 19/05/2021 15:49

Still? I had "just a cold" and a positive test. Of course the school are right.

UpTheJunktion · 19/05/2021 15:50

:Thunk thunk thunketty thunk:

NewMatress · 19/05/2021 15:50

I was convinced it was only a cold and was only testing for the peace of mind of those around me. Do it if only for that reason.

rookiemere · 19/05/2021 15:54

YABU, testing is free and results back within 24 hours. He has a cough- one of the testing flags - why wouldn't you get him tested?

PuntasticUsername · 19/05/2021 15:54

Christ, we're nearly 18 months into this GLOBAL PANDEMIC. How are people still asking such thick questions?

This has been going on for over a year...how do you still not get it? Honestly, I despair. Your child has a cough. Get him tested and isolate your whole household until the result comes back tomorrow. It really is that simple and I cannot comprehend how people can continue to be so selfish.

gamerchick · 19/05/2021 15:58

You'll have to isolate for as long as the school says if you're not willing to get him tested OP. It's that simple.

FoxtrotSkarloey · 19/05/2021 16:00

No they aren't. YABU. Just get on with it and you won't have to isolate for more than one day.

HandsOffMyRights · 19/05/2021 16:02

DH had a negative test, DS had a positive test.

He had one of the three main symptoms and we got him tested ASAP. If we'd adopted your 'confident' attitude then he'd have been attending school while positive.

mainsfed · 19/05/2021 16:02

But DS hasn't been tested, OP. He could have caught Covid through other ways. He has a cough, he needs a test.

DumplingsAndStew · 19/05/2021 16:03

Nah, you're right. No need to have him tested - just show the school his exemption certificate

Sally872 · 19/05/2021 16:04

It probably is the same cold passed on from the family member with the negative test but not definitely.

And if I was a teacher parent of another child at your school I would not be happy with a child in the class attending with a cough and no test because "mum knows it isn't covid"

Jennyfromtheculdesac · 19/05/2021 16:07

Ffs. It’s so incredibly easy to access tests nowadays. Stop being a twat OP.

colourchanginglipstick · 19/05/2021 16:07

Unfortunately you need to get him tested or self-isolate for 10 days. I think it's a great shame there's not a saliva test out yet as it's an unpleasant experience for many kids and really stressful. So I can totally understand your reluctance to put him through it.

tracker222 · 19/05/2021 16:08

Actually I don't think YABU.

The rules are to take a test if you have a new continuous cough, not if you just have a cough!

My DS has had numerous colds over the winter and his school have never expected him to take a test.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 19/05/2021 16:09

Not sure why we needed the expense of tests when some claim to be able to diagnose without Hmm

Of course you should test and protect the school and community.

Chasanddive · 19/05/2021 16:10

I thought kids could go to school if they had a runny nose? But not any of the other symptoms? Correct me if I’m wrong

BetsyJameson · 19/05/2021 16:11

YABU just get him tested.

LettyLoman · 19/05/2021 16:12

Just test him. Fgs

peardrops1 · 19/05/2021 16:12
