Neighbours, parking and cats

Sorry for epic post. We've had civil but not friendly relations with our next door neighbours since they moved in 7 years ago. There is a two-part issue.

1.We have one car and half of our front garden is a driveway and the other half has plants and small trees on it. Next door has a smaller plot and have mostly a driveway with a hedge and raised planted border. This driveway could easily fit 2 cars if they were normal-sized and you could fit two massive ones if you paid attention (another nearby neighbour with a slightly smaller plot manages two vans). NDNs have two massive cars and a van. They park one car on the drive and the other car plus van on the road. I don't have a problem with this. However, they like to park as close to their house as possible and tended to block us in on our driveway. We would then have to ask them to move their car so we could get out. It was problematic late at night or in emergencies. So we started parking our car on the road in front of our house so that we wouldn't get blocked in. This means they either have to block their own car in or park slightly further away from their house.

  1. NDNs have several cats. One of them comes into our house constantly, shits everywhere, climbs on top of kitchen worktops and eats off plates etc. It just isn't housetrained. We had a cat years ago, so are aware it is possible to largely train a cat out of this behaviour. We have mentioned it, but get brushed off with amusing comments about how cats are our overlords and they go where they like etc. So we ensure that doors are kept shut, no large windows are open on the ground floor, and we spray water at cat when it manages to get in and boot it out. We have adapted our lifestyle to manage with the cat.
On Monday, NDN came to the front door as they have had a genius plan for dealing with the parking issue. I should dig up my front garden and tarmac it so we can park our car on the driveway making enough space for NDN to park one of their vehicles in front of my drive without blocking me in. This was presented as the obvious and only rational thing to do. I said I would discuss with DH but that I was very happy with my front garden as it was. While we were talking, the Cat of Doom shot between our legs, into the kitchen, jumped on worktops and attacked an open tin of tuna I was using when the doorbell rang. Cat cut itself on the tin, neighbour came in to help catch it and took it away. This morning, NDN have put a note through our door asking us to pay £800 vet bill for cat's injuries. DH says pay it (somehow) for a quiet life, but I think we need to take a stand now. AIBU?

Time to tell them to fuck off about both issues and re the cat - deny deny and deny - it's your word against theirs.

HeraInTheHereAndNow · 19/05/2021 13:40

Good grief. No, you’re not responsible for their vet bit.

Can you put a plant pot or something in the way so that you can access your own drive without them blocking you in by parking where the “plant pot” is?

They sound like a nightmare. I feel for you.

HeraInTheHereAndNow · 19/05/2021 13:40

🙄 vet BILL

LordOfTheOnionRings · 19/05/2021 13:41

LOL don't pay, that's hilarious. They should have their cat insured. Why are you letting them take the piss out of you?

DishingOutDone · 19/05/2021 13:42

Tuna - its not that the cost of the vet bill is high, its that if it was lower you'd like to pay it. Why? What if they say that the cat has multiple injuries and its entitled to come into your house and be injured again? Its just madness that you would even consider it.

MaeveDidIt · 19/05/2021 13:42

...and if you hadn't realised by now, they're seriously taking the piss out of you.
For an £800 vet bill - the cat must have amputated it's leg on the can!!
They must honestly think you're stupid.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 19/05/2021 13:47

I would have lost my shit long before now and told them to FUCK RIGHT OFF. They can pay their own damned vets bill too and the damage caused to your house.
DO NOT give in to them or they will be nit picking for ever more. Get tough on them.
My cats don't behave like that and if they did I'd keep them indoors.

Mamadothehump · 19/05/2021 13:47

You both need to take control here and learn to say no!! I don't know why you are putting up with this shit!!

ivykaty44 · 19/05/2021 13:49

regarding the vet bill

Cats are our overlords and owning one means paying the bill when they get into scrapes

As for the parking issue - what parking issue? we've solved it by not parking in our own drive and therefore don't get blocked int the drive any longer, suits us.

Gottalovesummer · 19/05/2021 13:50

I think you've got a bet on as to how long it takes to fill up a thread!

IntermittentParps · 19/05/2021 13:52

Ignore.
If they come and try to talk about tarmacking the drive again, say politely 'No' and close the door gently in their faces.
If they mention the vet bill do the same.
If the cat comes in again, spray it with something nastier than water (not to harm it, but something cats find repellent to smell; I don't know what).

Chloemol · 19/05/2021 13:55

Do not pay the vet fees co-write dish, as far as you can remember when you have previously discussed the cat getting in and what they said they would do

As it’s nothing then you have brought the issue to their attention previously, they have done nothing, they are responsible for their cat

NoMLMbots · 19/05/2021 13:59

Don't pay - their cat their problem - shouldn't be trespassing in your home. So tough.
Pile up cat shit and pop on next door neighbours path for them to dispose of.
Increase squirting water with washing up liquid at cat. It won't like this so might start to avoid you.
Leave garden alone and park outside your home.

Get rid of wet sock of a husband - what a waste - find someone who isn't such a walkover. PS my dog hurt it's paw whilst I was reading your post so could your husband pay my vet fee - ta.

NoMLMbots · 19/05/2021 14:00

Spray it with perfume - one of those 80's really stinky ones

NoMLMbots · 19/05/2021 14:02

Squirt with paint

Your husband not the cat obviously

DKmamma · 19/05/2021 14:04

WHAT?!?! They sound like vile people.

Dig up your front lawn?? and pay a bill for the consequences of opening a tin of tuna in your own home?!!

Their pet's vet bills are their responsibility. Cheeky gits!! You mustn't pay it! They're taking the absolute p*ss. (and that's coming from a cat lover)

IntermittentParps · 19/05/2021 14:11

Squirt with paint

maddening · 19/05/2021 14:12

Just post it back with a post it saying "no, this is your cat and your responsibility" and then ignore their suggestion about your drive.

Bumzoo · 19/05/2021 14:15

Ignore her request and send a bill for the ton of tuna. That'll be the end of the matter as far as you're concerned.

OhTheIronyOfItAll · 19/05/2021 14:21

Just reply “that’s what pet insurance is for”.

People suggesting you spray the cat with things that could actually harm it are awful.

SunnySpills · 19/05/2021 14:21

CF's. with a CF cat.
Do not cave in on this op.

moredogsthansense · 19/05/2021 14:22

I am a vet - just dropping in to say that while £800 sounds a lot, if the cat did actually need stitches and a GA then it absolutely would cost more than some posters seem to think. You can’t suture a cat’s face with it awake, and an anaesthetic is not cheap whatever the reason for it. I’d say a few hundred is a credible bill. Not that the OP should be paying it anyway.

cancancan · 19/05/2021 14:23

I've been around Mumsnet for a few years and this is by far the maddest neighbour request I've ever read!

How you don't laugh in their face I have no idea.

It's all well and good trying to keep a neighbourly relationship with your neighbours but it goes both ways. They obviously have no sense of trying to keep peace at all as they keep pushing their luck!!

DoubleTweenQueen · 19/05/2021 14:23

@WarmSausageTea

They’re batshit. Do. Not. Pay.
Really can’t add anything to this succinct and accurate appraisal :D
OneMamaAndHerGirl · 19/05/2021 14:28

Tell them two words, and they are so simple to say!

FUCK OFF..
