Neighbours, parking and cats

Sorry for epic post. We've had civil but not friendly relations with our next door neighbours since they moved in 7 years ago. There is a two-part issue.

1.We have one car and half of our front garden is a driveway and the other half has plants and small trees on it. Next door has a smaller plot and have mostly a driveway with a hedge and raised planted border. This driveway could easily fit 2 cars if they were normal-sized and you could fit two massive ones if you paid attention (another nearby neighbour with a slightly smaller plot manages two vans). NDNs have two massive cars and a van. They park one car on the drive and the other car plus van on the road. I don't have a problem with this. However, they like to park as close to their house as possible and tended to block us in on our driveway. We would then have to ask them to move their car so we could get out. It was problematic late at night or in emergencies. So we started parking our car on the road in front of our house so that we wouldn't get blocked in. This means they either have to block their own car in or park slightly further away from their house.

  1. NDNs have several cats. One of them comes into our house constantly, shits everywhere, climbs on top of kitchen worktops and eats off plates etc. It just isn't housetrained. We had a cat years ago, so are aware it is possible to largely train a cat out of this behaviour. We have mentioned it, but get brushed off with amusing comments about how cats are our overlords and they go where they like etc. So we ensure that doors are kept shut, no large windows are open on the ground floor, and we spray water at cat when it manages to get in and boot it out. We have adapted our lifestyle to manage with the cat.
On Monday, NDN came to the front door as they have had a genius plan for dealing with the parking issue. I should dig up my front garden and tarmac it so we can park our car on the driveway making enough space for NDN to park one of their vehicles in front of my drive without blocking me in. This was presented as the obvious and only rational thing to do. I said I would discuss with DH but that I was very happy with my front garden as it was. While we were talking, the Cat of Doom shot between our legs, into the kitchen, jumped on worktops and attacked an open tin of tuna I was using when the doorbell rang. Cat cut itself on the tin, neighbour came in to help catch it and took it away. This morning, NDN have put a note through our door asking us to pay £800 vet bill for cat's injuries. DH says pay it (somehow) for a quiet life, but I think we need to take a stand now. AIBU?

How does the cat get in.
2 of the most annoying topics in one post, ndn parking and cat poo.

Gothichouse40 · 19/05/2021 11:03

Would I pay, would I hell. Cats roam all over the place, if it got hurt outside and they didn't know what happened, they would have to pay the vet. I get fed up constantly cleaning up cat shit in my garden. So Im not a cat fan per se. I spend a fortune on deterrent, though I don't like harming any animal so I buy stuff that won't harm inc a water pistol. In my opinion cats are great for owners, who don't have to constantly clean shit out THEIR garden. Ignore the note, they don't even have the common decency to speak to you, as for changing your drive, and expecting you to pay for it, don't even entertain this. Your neighbours are freeloaders and sadly there are a lot of those sorts about.

Womencanlift · 19/05/2021 11:03

I like the sending back a receipt for your can of tuna idea

Why is this even a consideration? I cannot think of anyone who would think this is something to be considered. As per the mantra of MN - you have a DH problem if he thinks for a second that this should be paid

GammyLeg · 19/05/2021 11:09

@wildeverose

Nah. Try harder
I don't think the OP actually could try any harder, TBH...
Iloveacurry · 19/05/2021 11:09

No to both issues. They’re CFs.

Sparklfairy · 19/05/2021 11:14

Your husband is so wet. Ugh.

Can you get a quote for a very elaborate and expensive new driveway and put it through their door?

giletrouge · 19/05/2021 11:15

I did not see the £800 bill coming, immersed as I was in this tale of woe. It made me LOL.
As I would have LOLed loud and long if I'd been you looking at it.
Not a chance in hell, cf neighbours, would be my response. I'd rather rip off my own eyelids and eat them than pay your vets bill.
Brass neck doesn't even BEGIN to cover this one.

Bargebill19 · 19/05/2021 11:15

You are being taken for a mug. Don’t pay.
I have cats and would be mortified if any of them behaved like this to a neighbours and would be really trying to make amends with YOU. No way would I ask you to pay!
You do seem to have a Dh problem. I may have his twin. It’s a curse. But stand your ground and do not pay or change your garden - in fact buy a big grotty van and park it outside next door.

Bloodypunkrockers · 19/05/2021 11:16

So many issues in one post Hmm

Munkustrap · 19/05/2021 11:16

I am pretty sure the total vet bills combined for the last three years for our cat would be less than £800. Either the vet used gold thread for the stitches or NDN is taking the Mick.

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 19/05/2021 11:17

This can’t be real. Your DH can’t be that much of a pushover?

Stop being cordial to the neighbours, they’re clearly batshit and say firmly no, you won’t be paying fir their cats injuries. Do it by note seeing as that’s how they approached it with you

Whitchurch · 19/05/2021 11:18

Really?? Unbelievable that people would be so entitled!

Pinpointer · 19/05/2021 11:19

No way would it be £800 for a get to treat a cut

Pinpointer · 19/05/2021 11:19

*vet

CatPurple · 19/05/2021 11:27

In the nicest possible way: you (and mostly your DH) are being a doormat.

lanthanum · 19/05/2021 11:30

Suggest that they get rid of their planted border and hedge so they can fit two vehicles on their drive.

Mrgrinch · 19/05/2021 11:30

Jesus Christ OP you need to seriously open your eyes. Don't pay for their cat.

sapnupuas · 19/05/2021 11:31

Yeah, my cat didn't cost that much after being run over...

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 19/05/2021 11:31

The neighbours would be well-advised to insure their car. If this is true then you and your DH need to be far more assertive. If a neighbour had told me I should tarmac my garden in the way yours did, I would have said straightaway that wasn't going to happen.

Are they newish neighbours and you've been there a long time? Are you older or younger than them and they think they can push you around?

Ontheboardwalk · 19/05/2021 11:31

Surely the cat should be insured if they are responsible pet owners?

My cat had General Anaesthetic with vet and several nurses in attendance for full dental and a tooth out. This wasn’t covered by Insurance but cost less than £800

What did this vicious tin of tuna do to the cat??

sundowners · 19/05/2021 11:32

Are you OUT OF YOUR MIND?????!!!!! Stop being such a complete muggy doormat. Of COURSE you shouldn't pay- infact you should present them a bill for the cost of cleaning up after their bloody cat, the cost of your tuna! AND tell them firmly their great idea re. driveway benefits no-one other than themselves so you definitely wont be considering it, and that's the end of the matter. Your husband sounds like an absolutely tool with zero backbone for even considering it. You do this- you are opening yourselves to a lifetime of them taking advantage. Use this situation to show them your (hidden!) strength.
Grow some balls, please.

ElizabethTudor · 19/05/2021 11:33

No fucking way on both counts.
I would actually consider telling them to Fuck Off. Then maybe they’ll stop with this madness.

FatCatThinCat · 19/05/2021 11:33

As an experienced and devoted crazy cat lady to several cats, some more civilised than others, I recommend telling the cheeky sods to bugger off. One of mine came home with a half defrosted leg of lamb once. I'd be absolutely mortified if I knew the neighbour he'd nicked it off. I can't imagine the level of brass neck needed to bill them if he got injured while committing his crimes.

Comefromaway · 19/05/2021 11:36

I think your husband needs assertivenemss training?

And no way to getting rid of your garden.

Carbara · 19/05/2021 11:37

Oh come on, do such simpering spineless people exist? Why did you need to spend your time typing out paragraphs about how you both let your trash neighbours walk all over you? Deal with them.
