Neighbours, parking and cats

Sorry for epic post. We've had civil but not friendly relations with our next door neighbours since they moved in 7 years ago. There is a two-part issue.

1.We have one car and half of our front garden is a driveway and the other half has plants and small trees on it. Next door has a smaller plot and have mostly a driveway with a hedge and raised planted border. This driveway could easily fit 2 cars if they were normal-sized and you could fit two massive ones if you paid attention (another nearby neighbour with a slightly smaller plot manages two vans). NDNs have two massive cars and a van. They park one car on the drive and the other car plus van on the road. I don't have a problem with this. However, they like to park as close to their house as possible and tended to block us in on our driveway. We would then have to ask them to move their car so we could get out. It was problematic late at night or in emergencies. So we started parking our car on the road in front of our house so that we wouldn't get blocked in. This means they either have to block their own car in or park slightly further away from their house.

  1. NDNs have several cats. One of them comes into our house constantly, shits everywhere, climbs on top of kitchen worktops and eats off plates etc. It just isn't housetrained. We had a cat years ago, so are aware it is possible to largely train a cat out of this behaviour. We have mentioned it, but get brushed off with amusing comments about how cats are our overlords and they go where they like etc. So we ensure that doors are kept shut, no large windows are open on the ground floor, and we spray water at cat when it manages to get in and boot it out. We have adapted our lifestyle to manage with the cat.
On Monday, NDN came to the front door as they have had a genius plan for dealing with the parking issue. I should dig up my front garden and tarmac it so we can park our car on the driveway making enough space for NDN to park one of their vehicles in front of my drive without blocking me in. This was presented as the obvious and only rational thing to do. I said I would discuss with DH but that I was very happy with my front garden as it was. While we were talking, the Cat of Doom shot between our legs, into the kitchen, jumped on worktops and attacked an open tin of tuna I was using when the doorbell rang. Cat cut itself on the tin, neighbour came in to help catch it and took it away. This morning, NDN have put a note through our door asking us to pay £800 vet bill for cat's injuries. DH says pay it (somehow) for a quiet life, but I think we need to take a stand now. AIBU?

Hilarious. If you pay the vets bill you're insane.

Notaroadrunner · 19/05/2021 12:22

@borderforce

Is this actually for real?
I doubt it. Nobody could be so stupid as to even consider paying the vet bill or to tell the neighbour that they would think about the driveway suggestion Hmm
Zzelda · 19/05/2021 12:23

It's not as if your DH's view that you should pay the vet's bill for a quiet life will work, because the neighbour will keep banging on about the parking anyway. So you might as well make it clear that you aren't pushovers.

RestingPandaFace · 19/05/2021 12:23

There’s a 4 step solution to this problem.

Don’t even enter into a discussion about the vet bill.

2.Buy the biggest supersoaker you can find and spray the hell out of the cat if it so much as looks at you.

  1. Buy the second biggest supersoaker you can find and spray your DH every time he exhibits a complete lack of spine.
  1. Laugh loudly if they raise the bill or the drive ever again.
Boxtroll · 19/05/2021 12:23

YABU for even considering paying the vet bill!!

I love cats and once had a neighbours cat that would jump in to my house through the windows! So I understand it can be difficult to get them to stop doing that. However, it is there responsibility to pay the bill if their cat gets in to mischief.

The parking issue, they need to not be so cheeky! I would park on my drive, then wake them up at 5am and midnight to move their car for me!

ThewaterlilliesofGiverny · 19/05/2021 12:25

Is the bill £80 and they’ve added another zero?

Mrgrinch · 19/05/2021 12:27

Also what did the cat do to itself with a can of tuna to rack up an £800 bill?

I know vets are expensive but really?

Penners99 · 19/05/2021 12:29

OP, the only response is ODFOD

quizqueen · 19/05/2021 12:30

Call the police about the parking every time it happens or tell them you will have to start blocking them in too. Re vet bill-their cat, their responsibility but I can't believe the vet bill would be that high unless it had to have major reconstructive surgery. When the cat returns, put a small concentrate of lemon juice in the water that you spray it with, as cats hate that smell, so may discourage it to return. Don't spray near its eyes, obviously.

I have cats and recently a cat from another house in the next street has taken a shine to coming into my house and stealing the cat food. I can't really complain because I don't know if my cats are a nuisance to anyone. One of them certainly tries to get in next door and they even have a dog.

Bubby2997 · 19/05/2021 12:33

Jeez op what a nightmare. Don't change th layout of your garden/drive for them. Not your fault they have multiple cars. Do not pu the vets bills! I mean their bleddy cat came into your house 'uninvited' and they expect you to pay? They sound batshit.

Have you ever considered getting a dog? 😂 we used to get cats enter our house when the back door was open. We got a dog and they wouldn't dare now! (Not that she was hurt a cat but she would bark and scare it off).

OldEvilOwl · 19/05/2021 12:33

I call bullshit

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/05/2021 12:35

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

You are far too nice.

I’ll be presenting them with the receipt for the replacement tuna tin and as for the driveway solution, over my dead body.

Absolutely the above.

Tell them to F*ck Off!

Apart from anything else, there's no way a couple of stitches in a cat's lip will cost £800, even at today's inflated vet's prices. They should have their pets insured if they are going to let them wander.

Keep parking as you are parking.

Keep squirting the cats

DON'T DISCUSS IT ANY FURTHER.

Theunamedcat · 19/05/2021 12:36

Mine and the neighbours cat once destroyed a shed together she laughed it off

starfishmummy · 19/05/2021 12:36

Old house, had neighbours who thought it would be a great idea to combine our front gardens/drives into an in and out drive for us both to use. Our one car to their three plus a caravan - which we envisaged being parked outside our window. No way!!

supercee · 19/05/2021 12:38

It's always the same writing style innit. At first perfectly plausible then an additional clanger. Yawn.

MoonCatcher · 19/05/2021 12:39

That tin of tuna sure smelt fishy

FreekStar · 19/05/2021 12:40

This is a wind up!

Cats do not cut themselves on cans of tuna!

Can't believe anyone has enough time in their lives to sit and type this made-up shit out!

BearStack · 19/05/2021 12:42

This can’t be real.

HoppingPavlova · 19/05/2021 12:42

I would put the bill back through their letterbox with a note that said, ‘Good one, that’s hilarious. I’ll one up you - see bill attached for a replacement tin of tuna.’

If they mention your front yard again, just look at them with a confused look and say. ‘No, because that’s insane’. No idea why you said you’d talk to your DH about itConfused.

FuriousFemale · 19/05/2021 12:43

Nope. Cat owner here with 3 cats and wouldn't expect anyone else to pay for an accident like that. If it was deliberate or an out of control dog that caused the injury it would be different.

They should have had insurance for situations like this

Heleavesreviews · 19/05/2021 12:45

my neighbours are like this too!
you've made me feel better, thank you.

all the stuff about nicey nicey presenting it as the only sensible solution....

roguetomato · 19/05/2021 12:46

Of course you should pay. And make sure you create a decent parking space for the neighbour. And maybe you should offer to pay their mortgage and utility as well.

MajorMujer · 19/05/2021 12:49
Hmm
Glenthebattleostrich · 19/05/2021 12:51

Your NDN must be related to the arseholes i live next door to.

their solution to not blocking our drive was also we convert our garden and let them park there. They were genuinely shocked when we told them where to go and suggested parking over their own drive.

They also complained to our management company (leasehold estate) that their child kept cutting their hand because of our plants. I told them to keep their kid out of our garden and to stop him coming onto my property to pull at my rose bushes.

They complained about my dog barking, that was because their child kept pushing sticks through the fence and trying to hit her.

At this point i sent a solicitor letter stating if they carried on i would be persuing them for harrassment and damage to my property

Quincie · 19/05/2021 12:52
