New neighbour, terraced house, seems to expect silence

Bahhhhhumbug · 19/05/2021 01:34

New neighbour to my empty (atm) terraced property. As soon as moved in started sending me texts (got my number by asking previous neighbour she bought house off but that's a whole other thread) informing me there seems be a tv left on in the property.
She said l hope l didn't mind her texting me and she askedfor my number.
I texted prev. neighbours and queried whether their buyer knew my house was empty and she said yes as she had told her.
I have always got on very well with former neighbour so didn't 'pull her up' on giving out my number as was very out of character and just figured she got caught on the hop in what was a very stressful house move for unconnected reasons to this tale.
So l text back to new neighbour that yes l was aware and it was a radio left on a talking channel as the house was empty but thanks for letting me know.
Next day l get a phone call from her and she's all 'Hi (insert very shortened version of my name, which even the old neighbour never called me) and she tells me again the radio has been on all night (it hasn't its on a timer goes off about 11pm and a lamp comes on) because she ' can hear it ' l was l admit a little frosty with her as l was annoyed at these chummy texts and calls from someone who shouldn't even have my number and shouldn't have even asked for it imo though l accept old neighbour partly to blame.
I had to read between the lines at this point that she found it too loud so l said (without being asked) l would call next day, (which l did) and turn it down and move it to the far wall in the kitchen (no neighbours that side).
I've had another long text off her today after ld done all that saying can l please answer and confirm that l am going to turn it down (she wasnt in when l went round and obliged so obviously at this point didn't know l had already done so
) Whilst there l also checked upstairs l couldn't hear it wafting up the stairs which l couldn't whatsoever and l have good hearing. It is quieter than a normal volume speaking voice and you can only hear it after you've gone two doors into the house, it's about a volume 3 on Alexa equivalent.
Old neighbour when asked said couldn't hear it when l was in there and neither could l.
Shes rang me twice again now and l just ignored her in the hope she will text me and tell me what the fucks wrong now. She did then text saying she wants it switching off as she can still hear it.
She keeps bringing up that she works from home and l get impression she seems to think that means should be almost silence from neighbouring properties. Or maybe because the vendors told her my house was empty she had an expectation of it being completely silent.
If people moved in they would be entitled to watch tv, talk, have radio on etc and all at a higher wolume than one quiet radio. WWYD as she is really getting on my nerves now.
If l was a rude person l might suggest she should've bought a detached house maybe, but lm not.

If you can't clearly hear the radio from her place then she must be deliberately listening for it outside her door and is causing trouble

Have we ruled out the possibility of the NDN wanting to burgle the OP's house but has been put off by the sound of the radio yet?

I think she must be getting physically repelled by the sound/radio waves thwarting her nefarious plans...
thehairyhog · 19/05/2021 21:53

This would drive me absolutely bonkers. Just turn it off.

Bayleaf25 · 19/05/2021 23:23

YABU if the house is empty I don’t understand what is there to steal? Just turn the radio off and stop annoying the neighbours unnecessarily.

YellowFish12 · 19/05/2021 23:25

It’s Schrödinger's radio. Both loud enough to be heard outside the house and deter a burglar from breaking in, yet quiet enough that next door apparently can’t hear it.

Yeah right Op!

OtterInDisgrace · 19/05/2021 23:30

This is the most cuntingly selfish thing I’ve read in ages. You’re not even there but you’re forcing this poor woman to listen to a radio from 9AM EVERY FUCKING DAY until 11pm.

It doesn’t matter if it goes on and off - in fact this may make it even worse as the poor woman has to anticipate it coming back on again. There are a few things more irritating than having some kind of background noise, non-stop, over which you have no control.

You really are incredibly selfish if you can’t see that this is really unreasonable.

This. ^ In spades.

If you read all the OP's posts though, you will see she has absolutely no intention whatsoever of quitting this hideous practice of leaving the stupid radio on all day 'to deter burglars.' Hmm She has been told repeatedly by many posters that she is being unreasonable, but she is indignant and sniffy, and insists she is right, and will NOT turn the radio off.

I agree with @YellowFish12

Apparently the radio is super quiet, so the neighbour couldn't POSSIBLY hear it, yet it's also loud enough to deter burglars. LMFAO. This is all so stupid and pathetic, yet the OP just can't see how ridiculous she is sounding.

It's a load of old rot. The OP is making it up as she goes along, and moving goalposts and shifting the 'facts' around to suit her (lame) argument.

Quaggars · 19/05/2021 23:40

Late to the thread, but terrace house walls can be incredibly thin.
I can (no word of a lie) hear my neighbour sneeze when all's quiet lol)
If you've got a radio playing for ages, and no-one's in, that would drive me absolutely bonkers.
She can clearly hear it to be able to know it's there in the first place!
I was all set to be YANBU as you expect a bit of noise in a terrace house. but in an empty one fuck that, just turn the bloody thing off!
YABU

Quaggars · 19/05/2021 23:49

@Winkywonkydonkey

Other pointless things you could do to dissuade burglars:
  • ice on the outside steps
  • broken christmas baubles on the floor
  • manikins rigged up to dance around on a small train track
  • sit inside and pretend to be a voice off an old gangster film
Grin

And a kindly old shovelly neighbour to deliver a nice shovel blow to the mush if needed or a Pigeon Lady lol

littlepattilou · 19/05/2021 23:52

What amazes me is the stupidity of the question that has been asked (by the OP and a couple of others,) 'how can anyone stand normal day to day sounds then if they can't stand the radio?' And 'God HELP her when she has neighbours!'

I can't believe anyone is so obtuse and dense that they can't see the difference. Normal day to day neighbour sounds vs a radio on for 15 hours, constantly, echoing around an empty house, with no-one living there to ask to turn the cunting thing off.

Like another poster said, I would have smashed the window and ripped the thing out of its socket and thrown it in the bin.

littlepattilou · 19/05/2021 23:53

@Bahhhhhumbug You misunderstood me when I said I hope squatters move in. I don't want them to move in to upset the lady/neighbour who's fucked off about your annoying twatty radio. I want them to move in and be quiet, but I do want them to move in and refuse to leave.

Allwokedup · 20/05/2021 06:53

@littlepattilou and why is that?

BRAVO, Geta! I 100% agree. Bloody fucking sick of the noise generated by inconsiderate arseholes and there's no end of ill I wish on all of them.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 20/05/2021 09:05

I'd be dropping a bomb on the entire house if I was the neighbour, just to stop the twatting radio from playing.

It's very much a moot point if having a radio on intermittently is a useful deterrent and an empty property might amplify it. Equally the NDN might be over sensitive to noise and she isn't entitled to expect quiet because she is WFH. Though it is fair enough to ask.

I would turn it off, just to keep the peace and see if she notices but there's a good chance that the NDN, having got used to silence ND is going to be sorely disappointed, whether the noise is general hubbub or a TV/radio on all day - which is entirely possible. And there's nothing wrong, per se, with having a radio on at 11pm any more than a TV - either can be a noise nuisance or not.

But the main thing I am taking away from this is I sure am glad the that lot of the PP aren't my neighbours. Sheesh, so much anger and vitriol.

Comefromaway · 20/05/2021 09:50

Getafuckinggrips post was downright nasty!

Blueberriesonmyshreddies · 20/05/2021 10:16

It would be the 11pm for me. I am in bed at 10pm every night except high days and holidays. Sometimes I am in bed by 9pm.

I know It would bug me hearing a radio in that 9pm to 11pm window as my DS plays on his games console, with a barely audible volume, in that timeframe. Once you have heard it your brain centres on it.

Snakeprint · 20/05/2021 10:19

Block her number

@littlepattilou, it might have been an idea to read the OP's posts before accusing other people of being obtuse and dense. The radio isn't on for 15 hours a day.

OP, maybe you should ask to get your thread deleted as it's obvious you're not interested in what people have to say despite asking for opinions?

Otherwise it may seem like you're just deliberately trying to wind people up.
