Job adverts without salaries

Am i being unreasonable in thinking job adverts should come with salary ranges?

I'm looking for a new job for various reasons, but it's annoying that the salary is "competitive". Is it really now, then tell me what it might reasonably be!

There is quite a lot of variation within my industry, but I don't want the faff of trying to find out about a job and then find out it's going to pay less than my current job.

Or am I being like my username a precious diva Grin

Should be illegal. Well maybe not but they’re so annoying. “Competitive salary” means “as little as possible.”

Ugh I hate that too. Why should I spend my time tweaking my CV and busting my ass for an interview to find out it's 3 grand less than I already make?!

YANBU. Whenever an advert just says “competitive” without giving the actual salary I assume it’s not.
What’s even more annoying is when companies that don’t advertise their salary expect you to give your current salary as part of the application process or initial phone call.

Never give your current salary - you are under no obligation to do so!

Your new employer will find a way to offer about a grand or so more than you earn - even if he was planning to pay 5k more.

Does my head in. I've always worked in the public sector so it's always been very transparent. The role I do can literally range £30,000-£100,000, not exaggerating, it's a role some organisations covet, others tolerate, so the JD really doesn't help. It discounts huge amount of private sector jobs for me, if I was truly interested I might contact them, but haven't thus far, because I just couldn't bear to start the process no knowing what I'm roughly shooting for as salary is pivotal. It's easier if a recruiter contacts because I'm happy to ask them the range.

Yep, found this incredibly frustrating when I was made redundant previously. There is also a huge variation in my industry so it was impossible to know which ones I would be embarrassing myself by applying for and which I would be wasting my time with.

I think it is so that internal don't look at the job and know the salary to hold it against the applicant? I might be talking shit.

It's really annoying. Last time I applied for a job like this, I got rejected and I later saw it re-advertised with a salary quite a bit lower than mine. So maybe they realised that the tactic of not giving the salary made the 'wrong' people apply.

I agree! I suspect that they make salary offers depending on how cheap they think they can get a candidate for (I’ve been on interview panels but not part of the salary negotiations)

Many years ago I rang about a job which stated that the salary was 'competitive' to try to get some idea.

The recruiter laughed when I said that my idea of competitive and theirs could be very different.

I got the job.

I wouldn't apply for a job that didn't state a salary. It is a complete and utter ballache jumping through hoops if you don't even know if it is paying what you are earning now.

Yes it annoys me too. I just won't apply for jobs that will not state a salary.

I'm public sector and there have been several where I've been able to find absolutely nothing on salary. Some you will be able to find on other websites etc but I've never found a magic back door with this information.

I don't apply for those. It's a waste of my time. Range DOE is fine by me, but with no bracket there's no way to tell if it's worth the application process. They can take months!

“Competitive” is code for “we will try to lowball you”.

Roles in my industry and at my level are always sourced via specialist recruiters. That is a mixed blessing but at least when they call you they have to give you the salary range!

Agreed, I always ignore the jobs that won't state it. Why put the effort in when it may pay less than I'm already on?

@AyyMacarena I'm surprised, I've never seen a public sector job advertised without the salary range, what part of the public sector? Public sector salaries are relatively open knowledge. Unless you mean they advertise the grade and not the salary, you can usually find the info from the grade (and can easily ask) but with a bit of sleuthing it really isn't difficult to find a public sector salary (usually, not saying you're wrong, in my experience) salary ranges are often published somewhere on the internet, Google similar roles, add FOI into the mix and you can normally find a ball Park.
