Job adverts without salaries

jobbingdiva · 18/05/2021 19:29

Am i being unreasonable in thinking job adverts should come with salary ranges?

I'm looking for a new job for various reasons, but it's annoying that the salary is "competitive". Is it really now, then tell me what it might reasonably be!

There is quite a lot of variation within my industry, but I don't want the faff of trying to find out about a job and then find out it's going to pay less than my current job.

Or am I being like my username a precious diva Grin

@AyyMacarena haha no worries, I was doubting myself for a minute there!

WhySoSensitive · 18/05/2021 20:05

Competitive to me means: ‘we will wait till we’ve met you and decide if we offer the very bottom or just above the bottom of what we can get away with’

Echobelly · 18/05/2021 20:05

It is annoying - I work in a field where salaries for same sort of role can vary a lot (though none very well paid). I'm about to apply for a role that may not pay any more than I am earning now but they're not saying! It's a smaller organisation than I work for now, so it's hard to tell.

StevieNix · 18/05/2021 20:06

Yeah I don’t think it should be allowed to not state salary. What a waste of time to apply and then find out that your definition of ‘competitive’ is way off the mark of what they’re offering

poorbuthappy · 18/05/2021 20:11

I've had 3 calls from recruiters in the last 2 days for roles and they have asked me for my current salary.
I always reply with I am looking for £X to move.

AngeloMysterioso · 18/05/2021 20:17

They’ll quite often lie anyway... I once applied for, interviewed for and was offered a job that was advertised as paying up to 30k - my salary at the time was 30k, which they knew when they first interviewed me. Their first salary offer was 25k, then 27.5, then they said they wouldn’t go nighter than 29. Absolutely ridiculous.

jobbingdiva · 18/05/2021 20:23

Oh lovely to see the replies, glad I'm not being precious! It's just so frustrating. And I'm in the private sector.

I have to say I have seen some jobs with NHSX (the digital arm of NHS, more in my sector) and they were one of the few jobs that had a pay range attached!

YADNBU

I also think job adverts should state the hours required and which days for part time jobs.

If I made the rules I would extend this to include the number of days annual leave also.

changename7634 · 18/05/2021 20:37

@transformandriseup and pension details!

Wherearemymarbles · 18/05/2021 20:37

Yep, the company i work for is recruiting and says competitive salary. Its not in the slightest. They are trying to recruit 2 people for my team and I keep rejecting them all. When the boss asked why no joy I was blunt and told him I wasnt going to hire a monkey just because they were only prepared to pay peanuts.

So frustrating from both sides!

Minstrelsgetinmybelly · 18/05/2021 20:47

I agree I’ve looked at a few job specs and it really annoys me. It puts me off applying for a job to be honest.

This is my biggest bug bear right now.

I’m trying to find part time work yet every single part time vacancy just says either Part time with no hours mentioned or Part time 16 hours and that’s it.

No mention of shifts or days .

Why would I waste my time doing online assessments to then get to interview and find it’s completely opposite hours to what I require or the employer requires.

It’s really really frustrating.

Iheartmysmart · 18/05/2021 21:09

I’m looking for another job at the moment and don’t even bother to read the job spec for ones without a salary. Annoyingly that seems to be most of them at the moment!

BrilliantBetty · 18/05/2021 21:10

YANBU!
It seems so obvious that a salary should be included. V annoying when it's not.

Becca19962014 · 18/05/2021 21:12

I've seen it a lot. In the NHS when I was at the end of my career agenda for chaos was doing its thing along with the key shit framework so posts were advertised without salary, just a grade. My post was advertised at more than half the salary I got - they still wanted the work to be done and my qualifications, no one even applied!

I once had an interview for a job advertised with "competitive salary" and expected a reasoned discussion regarding salary but nope I was offered half what I was earning elsewhere and stayed put. I was eve stupid enough to think they'd misunderstood until my manager at the time pointed out it simply meant as cheap as possible.

OccaChocca · 18/05/2021 22:10

What baffles me about all of this is that for some jobs (i.e. admin) recruiters are so inundated with applications that they rarely even bother to acknowledge applications.

Err.... maybe put a salary and you might find it reduces the number of applicants?

Hurr8cane84 · 18/05/2021 22:46

It's a way to pay you less really. Pisses me off.

covetingthepreciousthings · 18/05/2021 22:52

YANBU and totally agree with comments saying it's so they can decide whether they pay you more or less when they meet you.

It should be made a legal requirement to state salary in job adverts, it can be a waste of everyone's time.

MadMadMadamMim · 18/05/2021 23:02

I'd phone and ask if it's something you're interested in.

Like others say, I'm not wasting my time applying for a job if it's nowhere near my current salary.

BackforGood · 18/05/2021 23:11

YANBU at all.
Particularly when they make up fancy job titles for quite menial roles. Or even just making up job titles for any role, in truth, so you have no idea what the job is and have to go deep into it to get the role description or what they are looking for in candidates. If they'd been a bit clearer up front you could just scroll past things you are not going to go for anyway. That applies both for high powered jobs you just don't have the qualifications or experience for, and also lower jobs that you can't afford to take on - just be open and honest and stop wasting everyone's time.

PensionsYes · 18/05/2021 23:17

Yep it’s a red flag for WE ARE TIGHT.

Avoid unless you’re desperate and even then have a plan B ...

Anonmousse · 18/05/2021 23:22

Most job adverts in my industry dont have salary listed , it's all competitive or dependent on experience...which doesnt tell me anything!

Belledan1 · 18/05/2021 23:36

I agree. Also agree should state if part time what hours. Also with full time actually. I went for one when I got there for interview it was 9 to 6 which wldnt work with childcare. Also areas. Some just say West Midlands, Staffordshire, Merseyside which covers a massive area that you may not want to commute to.

Donitta · 18/05/2021 23:42

Drives me nuts. It’s time wasting for both me and them because if they’re offering less than my current job I won’t waste my time applying.

OccaChocca · 18/05/2021 23:52

Mind you, a couple of times I have been through the interview process where I knew the salary range. Got offered the job but salary quite a lot less than the upper limit. I was at the top of my game in that particular career and exactly what they were looking for yet they offered me less. Why? I can only assume that they had no intention of paying the upper limit.

After a bit of haggling, I turned down both of those job offers. What a complete and utter waste of time.
