AIBU to think that medication which can eliviate symptoms of menopause are charged.

I have just been prescribed patches, they come as one patch, but because the have two ingredients in, I am charged two prescription charges. I also have some gel.

So two items for £28.05

I am so mad right now!!

Well all others who aren't eligible for free prescriptions have to pay for meds for other equally debilitating conditions so yes YABU

ineedaholidaynow · 18/05/2021 11:34

Are you sure you have to pay twice? I had to pay twice as had 2 different patches, but once I was on one type of pill/patch I only pay for one I am sure. Need to check next time I collect them.

Hankunamatata · 18/05/2021 11:37

I agree. They should be treated like contraception and be cost free. Thank goodness northern ireland doesnt have prescription charges.

justanotherneighinparadise · 18/05/2021 11:38

To get it privately your looking at a couple of thousand pounds per year. Perhaps more. That sounds like a great price!

AdditionalCharacter · 18/05/2021 11:39

You can buy an annual prescription to lower the cost. Paying prescriptions prices are often crap, but rather that than to pay the full price.

I take low chemotherapy tablets every day, long term. They're £1200 for a box of 30, I use three boxes a month. I couldn't afford it if not for the NHS.

Outbutnotoutout · 18/05/2021 11:44

I'm in England so pay for my prescription

If I was Scotland or Wales or it seems Northern Ireland they I wouldn't.

Apparently because they have two different ingredients in, yes pay twice 🤷‍♀️

I buy a prepaid prescription thingy as I take 4 different meds and it saves me loads.

vivainsomnia · 18/05/2021 11:50

It’s life. As said, many people with debilitating conditions have to pay. My dd has to pay a lot for her asthma medication and she’s a uni student.

Leonardsgirl · 18/05/2021 11:51

I have patches. I only pay one prescription charge?

One of medication costs about a grand a month. I have to take it for the rest of my life.

Just buy an annual prescription - £100 for a year, and you can have as much as you like.

Mummyratbag · 18/05/2021 11:53

Yes you pay twice (two hormones - the ones that only have one are single charge). As others have said get a prepaid prescription

www.gov.uk/get-a-ppc

£108.10 for the year. Covers ALL prescriptions you need.

Justcallmebebes · 18/05/2021 11:53

I have a regular monthly prescription of one drug and have now just signed up for pre-payment certificate. It's just over £10 a month but you get unlimited items/prescriptions. If you pay for more than one item a month this makes financial sense.

TwoAndAnOnion · 18/05/2021 11:54

The NHS prescription charge increases to £9.35 per prescription item. At the same time, the price of a 3-month Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) increases to £30.25 and a 12-month PPC rises to £108.10.

I think someone made a mistake and I would query that

Outbutnotoutout · 18/05/2021 11:55

So I already pay into the NHS as I work full time, but I need to pay again?

Joke

RichTeaCheddars · 18/05/2021 11:56

The charge for NHS prescription is £9.35 per item. You were charged for 3 items, two different patches and a gel. Seems correct to me.

You can get a pre payment certificate which works out cheaper if you need on average one item or more a month. For 12 months it's £108.10.

Oh grow up!!! We are so fucking lucky in this country it’s not even funny. Try living in the US and seeing how expensive their health care is, or a country on the bones of their star whose health care has collapsed.
justanotherneighinparadise · 18/05/2021 11:57

*arse

LittleOwl153 · 18/05/2021 11:58

Reading the NHS pharmacy charges it suggests that HRT where there are 2 different parts to the medication - eg a ble tablet taken once a day and a yellow one taken hourly but they come from the same box to be taken as a set or 1 tablet and 1 cream but 'sold' in the same box as a double action kit are charged double - as if they are 2 separate meds. If you have 1 patch with both meds on though then the shouldn't be charged separately as for example cocodamol is coding and paracetamol in the same tablet - 1 charge.

Overthebow · 18/05/2021 11:59

Unless you are a higher tax payer and have been for a long time you take out more from the system than you put in. Your medication will still be subsidised, and you had a free GP appointment to get prescribed it. As others have said, pay the annual fee and you can have as many prescriptions per month as you need for one price.

Leonardsgirl · 18/05/2021 11:59

My patch has two different ingredients. I only pay one prescription charge.

Not really, you could go private and pay that.

Get the annual certificate for £108. That is incredibly cheap.

normalsaline · 18/05/2021 12:02

You’re getting MORE than your tax money’s worth. Don’t be ridiculous, you’re like a sulking child

Agree. My bespoke potion with consultations, blood tests etc works out at around £2.50 per day.
notapizzaeater · 18/05/2021 12:04

Did you get a receipt ? You can claim this one back if you get a pre pay,ent certificate.
