AIBU to think that medication which can eliviate symptoms of menopause are charged.

I have just been prescribed patches, they come as one patch, but because the have two ingredients in, I am charged two prescription charges. I also have some gel.

So two items for £28.05

I am so mad right now!!

Get a PPC and stop whining tbh.

Hankunamatata · 18/05/2021 13:13

Davina on menopause is def worth a watch for every woman. It's only through older ladies at work that I realise I was heading for early ish menopause, when talking about symptoms. Menopause isnt talked about enough.

On watching davina it said every woman over 45 should have a prescription for vaginal oestrogen.

ineedaholidaynow · 18/05/2021 13:15

@Outbutnotoutout you will find you have 2 different patches in the box, I think one sort for 2 weeks and the other for the other 2 weeks, as sort of gives you a cycle. So treated as 2 different medicines. When you pass through menopause you may go on a different sort of patch, combined, which is the same throughout the month, so only 1 charge.

Leonardsgirl · 18/05/2021 13:16

There are 2 different patches in the box which is why there are two charges. I'm on Evorel Conti and only pay one charge as all the patches are the same.

LizzieSiddal · 18/05/2021 13:17

You said you have gel as well. You’ll be paying for the gel and the patches- so two products.

Outnumbered99 · 18/05/2021 13:18

Just get the prepayment certificate- £10 a month ish.

ThrowAwayName01 · 18/05/2021 13:20

Err, I work in the NHS and the tax I pay on my salary doesn't cover my salary. The NHS is very heavily subsidised and prescription charges are a lot cheaper than the actual cost of medication. It's a contribution. By all means check you're making the right contribution for the number of items you have, but don't presume anything is free. Everything costs.

tropicalwaterdiver · 18/05/2021 13:21

How did you get patches prescription? I asked for HRT but was prescribed just Vagifem. It doesn't help much...

ineedaholidaynow · 18/05/2021 13:25

@tropicalwaterdiver go back to your GP. If not helpful, ask to speak to another GP.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 18/05/2021 13:28

I pay for life-saving prescriptions for asthma and high blood pressure and have been doing so for decades. I also pay for HRT.

I strongly suggest the pre-pay option, it'll save you a fortune.

Nope, just one type of patch x 8, which I use twice a week.

Give your head a wobble. Healthcare costs are enormous. Dhs blood thinners are £50 a month and he’s on them for life at 55. That and his cancer care, the heart ops he needs will wipe out his income tax contributions.

That is so crap. Have you watched Davina's documentary? Have a look and then go back to your GP.

It's on C4 I think.

ineedaholidaynow · 18/05/2021 13:35

@Outbutnotoutout per that pack you have 4 Evorel patches and 4 Conti patches, so you wear the Evorel ones first and then change to the Conti ones. So 2 different types. They give you a type of monthly cycle.

I was expecting a fight TBH, but soke to the female doctor this morning and she was so helpful.

I told her all my symptoms and told her I wanted HRT, which she said OK. Then I said I wanted the vaginal pestory, again she agreed.

OP you need go read the box. With Evorel Sequi you have 2 different patches - they are not all the same.

SpindleWhorl · 18/05/2021 13:37

I agree, the practical solution is to buy a pre-payment certificate.

I had to for my 5-items-a-month for psoriasis even when I was a student. It's not great, it's possibly not fair, but it's pragmatic.

And don't kid yourself that low to medium earners like us ever put in as much as we take out from the NHS and other services over our lifetimes.

MindyStClaire · 18/05/2021 13:38

You aren't paying for the medication, you're paying for the prescription. You also didn't pay for the doctor's appointment to get it prescribed in the first place.

Honestly, people in the UK have no idea how lucky they are when it comes to things like this. The price of medication should be printed on it so people realise what a bargain the prescription charge is.

Hankunamatata · 18/05/2021 13:39

Theres also a campaign to allow vaginal estrogen to be brought over the counter

Thank you, I have had another look and have 4 of each. Should have read properly!

My husband takes about 4 lots of meds for a lifelong illness. I also take HRT (two separate prescriptions). We both pay for an annual NHS prescription. As others have said, it's the cheapest way. Would suggest you suck it up and apply for one!

ineedaholidaynow · 18/05/2021 13:42

I used to be on them so knew about the different patches and the double charge, so remember querying it and grumbling about it the first time! @Outbutnotoutout
