Being ‘told off’ for minor rule infringements on Facebook groups

justanotherneighinparadise · 17/05/2021 13:15

AIBU to just roll my eyes and leave the group? Anyone else just cannot be bothered with the wrists slapping that goes on? I know its childish of me. I know if I sign up and agree ‘the rules’ I should respect the people who moderate the group. But man I feel like some of these people just love the power.

It’s like the only power I have is to think ODFOD and flounce 🤣

Caveat is that I don’t have any real Facebook group that I’m wed to. So to flounce makes no difference to my quality of life.

YABU - get over yourself and just follow the bloody rules
YANBU - these people just LOVE the power trip

I got told off once for calling someone a halfwit, because apparently that's ableist language. But apparently calling someone an idiot is absolutely fine and totally different Hmm

Oh wait, that was Mumsnet

SoddingWeddings · 17/05/2021 16:50

I was banned from our local "Gossip Girls" group after a dispute with a batshit woman who was complaining she was asked to remove her dog when popping into the local butcher. She couldn't see the problem. This same dog pissed up the bar in our local pub the week before when she was staggering about trying to order a other drink (obv pre covid).

I had to abandon the DIY On A Budget page and it's sister page for the utterly mental decorating - painting the kitchen sink and taps, wallpapering the floor, coating EVERY surface including doors, windowsills, flooring, bedding etc with glitter, vaguebooking, stealth boasting.... It was excruciating.

SoddingWeddings · 17/05/2021 16:52

Our three local pages are managed by the same admins. One woman started two of the pages. So far so good.

They started off "no MLM selling or recruiting" - hooray.

Main admin is now selling three different MLMs, and denies there's any rulez about it hun, despite it literally still being visible on the group rules 🙄

itsallaboutschmoo · 17/05/2021 16:57

@Dogoodfeelgood

Yes I was booted off a dog facebook page for offering advice. Only the admins were allowed to offer advice and normal members were allowed to make comments but not in an advicey way (murky rule) but they hadn't replied to this post and I KNEW the answer. Booted off immediately without a warning. I did chuckle. It was worth the thrill!
Think I know the group... is it the one where no one is allowed to talk you until you've read 5689 guides?
SamW98 · 17/05/2021 17:00

I'm admin for a FB all female group where members can share anything they don't want on their own page.

As we are all adults, the humour can be a bit on the naughty side at times. We haven't got an issue but FB have now added new algorithms and banning people for posts made months and even years ago.

Recently a mate got a warning for something she posted in 2012!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 17/05/2021 17:02

I haven't even been allowed to join my dog breed's FB group. I suspect that I failed one of the screening questions. I have found another one which is public and named Breed Lovers Worldwide group rather than an owners group and I've followed that instead. All I want is to see cute photos of this particular breed every now and then and the public group fills that brief entirely. I suspect the owners group that didn't want me would be much more serious and all about bloodlines etc.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 17/05/2021 17:03

I think YABU and should just follow the bloody rules. Generally if you’re not following them they’ll tell you why and delete the post so you don’t need to remember all forty billion of them.

Examples I hate, spamming with MLM shite, repeat posting from the same person several times a day on a selling site, each for £2 items, people posting on the local indie food page with their restaurant reviews, only to find out they’re the owner and haven’t declared it, people posting in medical groups with a photo of all their test results asking for info, when the group info tells them to type out their results with the reference ranges to make it easier for admins to respond. Then they moan about how much effort it is to type it all out to get their free medical advice while expecting the admins to spend time poring over the photo trying to decipher the tiny writing.

But the main one I hate is people on the Marie Kondo group who advise newbies to try just throwing away one thing a day, or having a pre-Kondo clear out, totally going against the principle of the method. If you don’t want to do KonMari join another bloody decluttering group! If you DO want to do KonMari, read the effing book and do it the right effing way.

One of my FB friends was complaining about another friend being banned for using 'fuck' as part of friendly banter. I said we should make up our own middle-aged woman swears that the FB algorithm won't recognise. I told her (as an example) that she was moist and she should just gusset off. She said it was the worst thing that anyone had ever said to her. Grin
BelleBlueBell · 17/05/2021 17:08

I was admin of a group for a while and it literally and 3 rules, stick on topic, no selling or advertising and I can't even remember the 3rd one and the number of posts that were sent in for selling and advertising was ridiculous. It couldn't have been clearer but people still complained if their posts didn't get approved.

It wasn't worth the hassle of trying to keep the group helpful for the members who were just interested in the topic.

I was banned from a US group for an infringement I wasn't even aware off, they do seem to like their rulz

Facebook are joyless bastards aren’t they.
And they're getting worse.

I got a 30 day ban for posting a meme and adding the comment 'lets face it, men are stupid' - that's hate speech apparently

Sparklingbrook · 17/05/2021 17:14

I don't have FB so made up a fake profile for a group I liked the look of. I soon found out here were some really odd people in it and I blocked a lot of them as they tended to lecture and patronise all the time, and be very rude with it.
I made the mistake of referring to blocking people in a post and got a telling off email that I must not refer to that, so I left the group, deleted the profile and breathed a sigh of relief.

Dixiechickonhols · 17/05/2021 17:23

I can see both sides. I used to post on a few SlimmingWorld Facebook groups but they all have different rules and no chance of remembering which were which so I don’t bother usually now. I admin our local community Facebook group (as no one else would do it) and it’s a thankless task.

lucyslocketinherpocket · 17/05/2021 17:38

I once for kicked off an American baby group which was all pregnant women. A woman had posted saying that she was annoyed that her husband had found her smoking weed and gone completely mad at her and how dare he?! It was her relaxation and everyone knows it's good for pregnant women to be relaxed. He was stressing her!

I said, obviously I think, that I didn't blame him and that smoking weed when pregnant is not advisable, bad for the baby etc. Which was quite judgy of me, but to be frank I was judging her!

Anyway. Cue cries of 'its legal in this state!' and 'not being supportive'. It was batshit and the admins removed me soon after Confused

Imagine actually saying or typing "you're throwing your own shit away ALL WRONG!! Do it this way or fuck off" 🤣🤣🤣

bananamonkey · 17/05/2021 18:11

I’m still bitter about an amusing post I shared not getting approved because “it’s not meme Friday” then an hour later some other twat posts the same thing and it’s approved.

Also people getting piled on for deleting a comment despite the fact there’s no rule against it. Apparently it’s bad form because people have invested “emotional labour” in responding.

XenoBitch · 17/05/2021 18:15

YANBU
Local community groups are the absolute worst for stuff like this. The admin/mods must be severely lacking in something in their own lives to want to bully and bend strangers to their will... all in the name of "community".
I was muted and then blocked from mine.... for mentioning that Covid was making people judgemental and finger pointy. I said it was having an huge effect on my my mental health. Another member carried on with "yeah yeah, another one playing the mental health card". A few other people commented defending me... then admin muted me for mentioning mental health (they said it drags the group down). A few days after this, admin posted a 'mental health check in' and said any member struggling could PM them.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 17/05/2021 20:57

There's a FB group for British wildlife, which states in the rules that only photos of British Wildlife is allowed. Yet some people still post pics of farm animals (not wildlife), pics of local wildlife they've seen abroad (not British), or animals in zoos🙄. It's such an easy rule to follow (the clue is in the name!) but still some people ignore it because "it's a cute lamb" etc, which always causes an argument. Because admin used to let things slide it became a free for all and all the "joyless pedants" like me left and joined another group which is consistent. If I want to look at pics of farm animals or zoo animals I'd joins the relevant FB groups NOT a sodding "BRITISH WILDLIFE" group. Arseholes! 😡😆

LadyGAgain · 17/05/2021 21:53

I fully appreciate that rules are required however we have a local community group and one of the admins is called Karen (it's true). During lockdown 1 & 2 this group was so important including sharing of jigsaws and plant cuttings etc (all covid safe). For lockdown 3 Karen determined that this was no longer allowed due to covid and anyone offering anything for free on the group would be removed/muted. Which took us to a whole new handmaids tale level. Confused
As of April 12th this activity was allowed again.

justanotherneighinparadise · 17/05/2021 22:13
