To think the royal family should end at the queen

I have respect for the Queen’s sense of duty but I do genuinely believe that it’s time for a conversation about the royal family. Honestly, who cares about the coming King Charles- is that really right? People mostly respect the queen but not the rest of them.

I read this article and I was one of those who thought their interview showed up some horrible stuff- there are clearly issues with the royals

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/may/13/prince-harry-royal-family-like-being-in-the-truman-show

Apart from all of the drama, I don’t think that we should be funding a royal family with tax payers money when the country is in such a state & the queen is literally one of the richest women in the world. I know royals in other countries are funded differently. The fact that the tories are mooting the idea of spending millions of public money on a ne boat to remember Prince Philip is a classic example.

Aibu?

You want Boris to represent the country?

feelingsadtoday2021 · 14/05/2021 06:50

I agree

northstars · 14/05/2021 06:51

Agree. Enough now.

Letshaveablackcelebration · 14/05/2021 06:52

Not nescessarily the Prime Minister @Quincie but we could look at other models where people are elected like in Ireland or France (obviously not advocating for guilotines to get there though)

Butchyrestingface · 14/05/2021 06:52

Agree Smile

newnortherner111 · 14/05/2021 06:52

I want to keep the monarchy. A Presidential head of state will if anything cost more (see France or the US as examples).

Though I think the OPs view may be shared by many, and after the Queen dies, support for a republic may grow.

Letshaveablackcelebration · 14/05/2021 06:53

I think I am advocating for a Republic!

About 1/3 of nations are monarchies, and it's a highly successful way to have a head of state

We've already had very broad hints of plans to slim down. I doubt we'll go the full Scandi, but the direction of travel seems set.

Letshaveablackcelebration · 14/05/2021 06:54

It could be that there is a different model of Monarchy that isn’t funded by public money though- the queen owns half the country so surely they can pay their own way?

There is a whole Royal Family board for stuff like this. YABU to post it here.

enjoyingscience · 14/05/2021 06:55

I agree. I hate the idea that we should be deferential to a family who produced and defended someone like Andrew. Just be done with it now I’d say - turn the houses and art collections over to proper public ownership, they’ll all still be rich enough to last several lifetimes anyway. Then they can get on being odious entitled nightmares out of the public gaze.

ethelredonagoodday · 14/05/2021 06:56

I certainly think they should be massively slimmed down...

Morgan12 · 14/05/2021 06:57

Yep. No need for it in 2021.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 14/05/2021 06:58

poor charles, a life time with this over his head, and you want to take it away from him

Fairyliz · 14/05/2021 06:59

A quick google says they cost the U.K. £69 million last year so just over £1 per head of population.

I’m happy to pay that for the entertainment value, who would we have talked about in 2020 if not them? Grin

tonimitchell · 14/05/2021 07:00

61% for YABU.

There is still a lot of love for the royal family. I really like Kate and William and think they do lots to raise awareness for charities. I’m happy for them to stay. They are slimming down and I think they are aware that’s what the public would like.

Just ask him to turn out the lights and close the door on his way out 😂

Well, republicans such as myself would have preferred change before now, but agree that when the Queen can no longer perform her duties it’d be a good time for a change.

Charles has no credibility.

Ponoka7 · 14/05/2021 07:02

I like having something that is unique to the UK and is of interest to the rest of the world. It wouldn't just be the UK'S choice, the Commonwealth would get a say and I doubt that they'd agree to get rid of them. They bring in as much as they cost, so there isn't a cost issue. I support Harry and Meghan getting out, it isn't any way to live and I think the royal advisors have been getting it very wrong since Diana.

Letshaveablackcelebration · 14/05/2021 07:03

Realistically too- if Scotland becomes independent, Ireland reunifies and Wales do too (I am welsh and support independence) then there isn’t going to be much of a kingdom to rule over - lots of the commonwealth moot independence too! It has always bothered me that we have a Prince of Wales!

And neither does William.

This thing is over.

Quincie · 14/05/2021 07:06

I think we have had years of lockdown now and normal scandals, life, celebrity tittle tattle, divorces have not reached the papers to nearly the same extent.
I think when normal life resumes the RF will get a break from whatever some royal expert interprets as a slight, family row, extravagant decision etc etc etc etc by some (normally boring) member of the RF. And they will carry on their very boring lives under the extremely intrusive British media as normal without every wink and fart being reported on the front page.
As I write that who would choose to be president and put their family through the microscopic intrusion that the RF gets (apart from members of the Johnston family) - I think we should be careful what we wish for - a Kardashian equivalent anyone??

Hadjab · 14/05/2021 07:06

I’d be more than happy for them to cease to exist as an entity, but if we really must have them, at least make them pay for themselves fully, they can afford it.
