Mushrooms

So, I’m reading a book at the moment - it’s a thriller, so far so ordinary ... halfway through and have suspicions on ‘whodunnit’ - however the thing that I can’t stop thinking about is this; in the book, the protagonist mentions cooking an omelette and says ‘I start peeling the mushrooms’! WTF? Is that a thing? Are you supposed to peel mushrooms? Does anyone actually do this? Or having I been missing something completely? Maybe it’s the year of relative isolation that’s making me obsess about stupid things - but I can’t get my head around peeling mushrooms as being a thing - if you do it, what exactly are you peeling off??

I peel mushrooms when they look a little a lot, maybe a little mouldy off colour quickly so the husband doesn't see

Scratchpostkitty · 13/05/2021 21:44

For some reason peeling mushrooms is familiar to me, but I've never done it. How weird! I can't work out why you would either.

Marquisdesad · 13/05/2021 21:45

Hmm sounds quite uncanny! Could it mean peeling the filmy skin off that you get on the outside of button mushroom caps?

BlackeyedSusan · 13/05/2021 21:45

I peel mushrooms, my mum peeled mushrooms, my gran peeled mushrooms, my gran picked mushrooms from the wild. this is probably why I still peel mushrooms even though I know lots of people don't. It's a habit born many years ago when mushrooms were picked from the wild. (and grandad went rabbiting with ferrets, and gran picked nettles for wine soup and they kept chickens... )

PurpleDaisies · 13/05/2021 21:46

I do if they look particularly dirty. Not sure types though.

Shopgirl1 · 13/05/2021 21:46

I peel mushrooms.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 13/05/2021 21:47

My mum always peeled mushrooms, or got one of us DC to peel them.
Then as a adult I found out that you should just wipe them so i do that if they look dirty.

Elouera · 13/05/2021 21:47

YABU- It depends on how old and large the mushrooms are! Its not peeling with a peeler BTW! Its peeling the excess/thick skin from very large/old mushrooms from the inside of the cape over and up to the outside.

I did it today with some that felt slightly on the turn and slightly slimy. Peel, and the rest was absolutely fine. I'm surprised you have never peeled a large mushroom, but maybe you don't cook with them much? Or only use very fresh, young mushrooms?

Pippioddstocking · 13/05/2021 21:47

I peel mushrooms

ihatemycarseat · 13/05/2021 21:49

I cannot stand mushrooms but find it oddly satisfying when i peel them if cooking for other people!

They are literally covered in dirt surly it would be like not peeling a carrot or something?!

Whiskeywithwater · 13/05/2021 21:49

Ok - that kind of makes sense, my mind is at ease! I personally just flick off any dirt. I did once have one of those soft little mushroom brushes to do the job. I’d imagine that’s in a drawer somewhere. Perhaps I’ll even find it one day!

Yep, you peel from the frilly bit underneath removing the smooth squeaky bit from the top. Alternatively you brush them with a mushroom brush (i kid you not) or wipe them with kitchen paper. Apparently what you don't do is wash them.

No, I never saw the point either.

jmh740 · 13/05/2021 21:51

I peel if they look a bit past their best

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/05/2021 21:51

There are different types of mushrooms and some should be peeled.

malificent7 · 13/05/2021 21:52

I peel ones with an obvious skin. It's strangely therapeutic!

FuckyouCovid21 · 13/05/2021 21:52

Never peeled a mushroom, I give them a rinse if they are particularly mucky but they're usually chucked straight in whatever I'm cooking

purplecorkheart · 13/05/2021 21:54

I grew up in a house with a mushroom brush and I can tell you I usually wipe with a damp piece of kitchen paper. I do sometime peel button mushrooms that are past their best for no logical reason

TattyDevine · 13/05/2021 21:55

So disappointed this thread is not about drugs 😀

InTheNightWeWillWish · 13/05/2021 21:55

I don’t like mushrooms and my mum doesn’t like mushrooms, so I never cooked them (or saw them be cooked) until I met DH. I started peeling mushrooms to cook some for him. Took bloody ages. DH saw what I was doing and pointed out the error in my ways. I kind of assumed they were a bit like a cauliflower and you removed the outer bit. Although, with hindsight that doesn’t really make sense now. Mushrooms and cauliflowers are very different things!

I don't peel anything. Potatoes, carrots, nothing. The goodness is just under the skin. Just wash it instead.
Wynston · 13/05/2021 21:55

I do peel mushrooms!
However there are many many things in life that I dont do and every day someone says something and I think wtf I dont so that.
I feel I somehow missed the instructions on life.

Smokeahontas · 13/05/2021 21:56

Peel them and put them in the bin, where they belong.

Absolute filth.

JiggeryWokery · 13/05/2021 21:58

My mum peels mushrooms. I think it may have been an instruction in a Good Housekeeping recipe book in the '70s.

TheRavenNevermore · 13/05/2021 21:59

Never peeled a mushroom. Sometimes I don't even remove all the compost Grin. Nobody's died yet!

purplecorkheart · 13/05/2021 22:03

I must confess I am curious about the title and author of the book. I love books with food mentions in them. Like you I have come across what other people think are normal food preparation techniques. Some were utter bonkers
