Underrated places in the UK

I enjoyed reading the thread on overrated places (so strictly this is a TAAT, sorry) but would love to know where in the UK people think is underrated.
Mine is Nantwich. I'd live there like a shot.

Also Berwick-upon-Tweed.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/05/2021 20:52

Newcastle! Amazing place. Genuinely arty and beautiful.

So glad Croydon gets a vote though.

Cheerfulcharlie · 12/05/2021 20:53

The Chilterns. No one ever thinks of going away to the Chilterns but it's stunning countryside.

DenisetheMenace · 12/05/2021 20:54

Another vote for Lancaster. Plus Leeds, Glasgow, Hereford(shire - just beautiful) and much of Northumberland.

PurpleBirch · 12/05/2021 20:55

Dunstable in Bedfordshire.

It has a very rich history and Dunstable Downs are beautiful. Lots of lovely countryside in surrounding villages too.

RunAwayNow · 12/05/2021 20:56

Kirkcudbright. Most of Dumfries & Galloway actually.
Cardigan.

Howtomakeevery1 · 12/05/2021 20:58

Portsmouth - the historic dockyard is great value and the shopping outlet centre is good with great food

lakesidelife · 12/05/2021 21:00

@PurpleBirch we used to live near Dunstable and loved going up to the downs with the dc.
We would fly kites and have a bacon roll in the NT cafe.

Robin60 · 12/05/2021 21:02

Staffordshire Moorlands

Another vote for.....Leeds. Are you serious ? It's the ugliest city in Britain.

Psychonabike · 12/05/2021 21:04

Dundee.

Not surprised to see it mentioned here a few times. Definitely under-rated but if you know you know.

It's a small city that still has some boutique type presence in the streets around the centre. The university is old and big, having a big impact on the population who are generally welcoming, and diverse. Great places to stay. Beautiful beaches in the local area- Broughty Ferry, across the water at Tentsmuir. The V&A. The Discovery and visitor centre. The Science Centre. Dundee Contemporary Arts cafe, museum, film theatre. Excellent restaurants. A fantastic place to base yourself for a family holiday -you can easily reach Perth, Pitlochry, St Andrews for outings. Spent a fortnight and you'd find something different to do every day.

The local accent can be a challenge though, it's definitely unique Smile

Hull, really truly Hull.

Crispynoodle · 12/05/2021 21:11

The whole of Northern Ireland! Simply stunning

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 21:12

The Pennines are beautiful. Lovely moorland with fantastic walks, friendly locals and good pubs.

MadameOvary81 · 12/05/2021 21:12

Glasgow. Fabulous music scene, museums, and parks. And the people are the nicest in the world.

queenisdead · 12/05/2021 21:15

Filey.

tanguero · 12/05/2021 21:15

The Mull of Galloway. The back, of the back, of beyond. Southernmost point, magical lights twinkling across the North Channel, sea frets moving in. In the UK, but do you have the faintest idea where ?

lots33 · 12/05/2021 21:18

Swansea. Came here 15 years ago on a vist, expecting a shit hole, and moved within a year. Totally underrated! And Gower which is part of Swansea.

BraveBraveMouse · 12/05/2021 21:27

Liverpool.

And the place I went on holiday to last week was amazing, but I'm not telling as part of the charm was the lack of people.

JADS · 12/05/2021 21:28

Birmingham, Glasgow and Swansea - the 3 second cities. I've had a fab time in all of them!

Ditto Plymouth.

The Kent coast, Deal and Walmer are great for a stony beach and a castle.

I guess I like things a bit grim and gritty Wink

buckeejit · 12/05/2021 21:30

Northern Ireland! Love it here.

Also Arncliffe - a little village out of the way in Yorkshire, where Emmerdale's original wool pack was or something. So lovely.

I'd really like to win the lottery & travel around the British Isles in a nice camper van to see where else makes me happy.

frumpety · 12/05/2021 21:32

Hull is a fab place, although I still can't quite believe they shut M&S !

Scarborough.

The beaches at Roker and Seaburn.

Seaham and Blast beach.

jaundicedoutlook · 12/05/2021 21:41

@GodolphinHorne

Hull, really truly Hull.
Really truly not Hull.

Went there to the big aquarium with the children when up in the north a few years ago. First thing, when stepping out of the car was almost run over by an obese woman who then stopped to give me the finger and scream some abuse at me.

Hull itself appeared to be mainly full of angry pugnacious gnarled people, all twisted up with resentment and spoiling for a fight. Half the city seemed drunk, and this was late morning on a Sunday. The centre appeared mainly to be boarded up or given over to betting shops. There was litter everywhere and brazen public drug taking was rife.

Perhaps I was just there on an off day?

SafferUpNorth · 12/05/2021 21:45

Galloway in southern Scotland! So much to offer for a great holiday - coast, wildlife, woodlands, lots of castles, gardens, history. Great for outdoorsy stuff. Have spent many happy times camping in Galloway.

HotelChoc · 12/05/2021 21:50

Yeh, but Newcastle isn't underrated. Newcastle is amazing, great nightlife, fantastic people, access to the coast, museums, quayside- why would anyone think it is underrated.
