Underrated places in the UK

I enjoyed reading the thread on overrated places (so strictly this is a TAAT, sorry) but would love to know where in the UK people think is underrated.
Mine is Nantwich. I'd live there like a shot.

*Haverigg is literally just down the road from me - you'll love it! Check out Riva Gelato on the Harbour Lights campsite - homemade ice-cream and it's stunning with new flavours everyday.

The beaches are stunning - there's Hodbarrow Nature Reserve too (with an Aqua Park) and I'd definitely recommend braving the roads and taking a drive up to Ulpha (about 20-25 minutes away) - there's a beautiful bridge and a lovely little cake stop up on Birker Fell.

I'd also recommend driving up the coast to Bootle (another lovely beach) and further inland to Wastwater and Eskdale - it's really beautiful down there and there are some lovely walks (and pubs!). Stanley Ghyll Force is a great little waterfall as well, and you can swim/paddle in the rivers in Eskdale too.*
@cupsofcoffee thank you for all this. I believe you can walk to Stanley Ghyll from one of the train stops so plan to incorporate that with our trip on the railway. Off to look up Ulpha - not heard of that!

Antrim coast
Staffordshire Peak District

Two gems there.

lakeswimmer · 12/05/2021 20:19

Swansea. We had a great holiday there a few years ago - fantastic beaches all around and very quiet even in August.

PlumKetchup · 12/05/2021 20:20

I'm lucky enough to live not far from the Peak District. Ashbourne and Bakewell are lovely. I also love Herefordshire and would happily move to the Welsh Borders - Hay on Wye especially.

The East Norfolk coastline and the area around Sheringham and Cromer. Some lovely unspoilt beaches. The Tendring area of north Essex - Manningtree to Walton-on-the-Naze is very attractive. Malvern and Lichfield are well worth a visit too.

Newcastle, Canterbury, Windsor, Birmingham and Liverpool!

Tottenham!

Agree with pp who said the Suffolk coast. Miles of empty beaches. If they were in Norfolk, people would be fighting each other to get there.

Agree with the Forest of Dean!

Gower!

Ledbury in Herefordshire. Beautiful countryside and a real mix of shops/independents etc

Tish008 · 12/05/2021 20:25

Harrogate

North coast of Northern Ireland...It's where I grew up and where I feel I can breathe and relax.

MrsPworkingmummy · 12/05/2021 20:26

Northumberland, especially the Breamish Valley, Alnwick and Wallington.
Tynemouth Village and Longsands beach.

Both beat the likes of Cornwall etc hands down

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 20:28

Alnmouth and Alnwick are beautiful although that famous book shop smells

SimonJT · 12/05/2021 20:28

The Forest of Dean

I absolutely love it, we go there several times a year, we now have a little camper, so I can’t wait for more adventures there.

Gormless · 12/05/2021 20:32

Cardiff
Birmingham

user64325 · 12/05/2021 20:32

Is Liverpool underrated? It's always highly recommended on places to visit for a weekend and it's probably been the most named place on this thread.

MargateSands · 12/05/2021 20:36

Nottingham seems to get a lot of stick but I lived there for a few years and loved it. Go back regularly for visits too.

The Mournes and the surrounding area is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Pleased to see Birmingham get praise, it's a great city.

Visited Aberystwyth last summer and loved it, found it very charming.

I'm very fond of Chester, but I wouldn't say it's underrated.

MargateSands · 12/05/2021 20:44

Also, Glasgow. Seems to get no attention compared to Edinburgh but in many ways it’s a better city.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 12/05/2021 20:49

Newark-on-Trent.

Catra · 12/05/2021 20:50
