Underrated places in the UK

I enjoyed reading the thread on overrated places (so strictly this is a TAAT, sorry) but would love to know where in the UK people think is underrated.
Mine is Nantwich. I'd live there like a shot.

OP posts:

I really liked Exeter when I went last year. But the people were really rude!!

Luddite26 · 14/05/2021 06:34

Middlesbrough.

Russell19 · 14/05/2021 06:41

@MaMaLa321 Nantwich? Really? Out of interest are you local?

Aside from a food festival and jazz festival each year there's nothing there besides a b&m and home bargains in the town.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 14/05/2021 06:57

Cumbria, drove through while heading to Scotland, beautiful scenery.

LynetteScavo · 14/05/2021 07:01

@Abracadabra12345 You want to persuade your friend to live in Coventry even though you've not visited? It's an overpriced dump

I haven't visited Swindon for a few years, but I used to visit frequently and don't think it deserves the bad reputation it has.

No, definitely not live! Visit, for a day as a halfway point when we meet

@telvg

Love a place called Scratby near Great Yarmouth. It’s so quiet and peaceful with a lovely beach and seals in the sea. Also love Portsmouth and Hayling island for its history and beaches and Leicester for its history (Richard iii, Bradgate Park, Lady Jane Grey, and for its diversity.
Yes, I know where you mean. The caravan parks are awful but the area is so lovely
TwinkleToesForever · 14/05/2021 07:33

Northumberland coast. Beautiful beaches.

sussexoldspot · 14/05/2021 07:50

North Lincolnshire and (I'd move back there in a heartbeat) wonderful Leeds

Northumberland coast. Beautiful beaches.
Northumberland isn't underrated though
Poorlykitten · 14/05/2021 08:27

Cumbria is also not underrated. It’s one of the most visited places in the U.K. what, with its unknown national park🙄... lots of these places are just people saying where they like. 😂

Geminijust · 14/05/2021 08:45

Agree that the Lake District is hardly underrated/undervisted but the same cannot be said for the Cumbrian coast & Western Lakes. Never thought of going there until I stumbled across it while searching for a cottage. Think the same could have been said of Northumberland a few years ago (went one August & it was wonderfully uncrowded), suspect not the case now as it does seen to becoming a popular place to holiday, rightly so as stunning.

Chillychangchoo · 14/05/2021 08:53

Coventry is fine for a day trip!

I live here and have done forever. I’m under no illusions about the place, and if I didn’t have such solid roots here, I would be off.

Coventry is expensive though and many of my friends and family can’t afford to live here anymore. Priced out. I have no idea why it’s so expensive.

ToryStelling · 14/05/2021 09:01

I’m originally from Crewe so I know Nantwich very well, have lots of friends and family there. It’s a lovely area and has really improved in recent years.

For anyone seriously thinking of moving there though, I’d avoid anywhere in/near the town centre. It has a lively bar scene and a couple of nightclubs. There are some gorgeous period properties around the town centre and all I can think is that they must get woken up by all the revellers at 3am on Friday, Saturday and Tuesday nights (student night)!

Imissmoominmama · 14/05/2021 09:04

Llandudno- it’s my happy place.

Aberystwyth area- lived in Borth as a child.

QuestionableMouse · 14/05/2021 09:08

Hartlepool.

Has a great open air museum, stunning beaches (the beach at Seton Carew is massive too) and is surrounded by very pretty countryside. (The dene at Crimdon is gorgeous)

Also not madly expensive and good links to Newcastle and York.

@lakesidelife

It is true that what makes a good holiday isn't great to have to live in. I would totally recommend Isle of Bute and Cowal Peninsular as a less known holiday destination as someone else has done but not as somewhere to live.
That's very true. We almost bought on the Cowal peninsula, but the reality of the rain, the midgies and the A83 changed our minds.

We'll continue to holiday there though, it's one of those places which make your heart sing.

singsingbluesilver · 14/05/2021 09:46

I have to smile at the lone voice naming Rhyl. I'm sorry, but it does not have a single redeeming feature. It is possibly the most depressing place I have ever been to. The high street is like a ghost down, the deserted children's village on the prom is an eyesore. It doesn't even have a fair any more - so much more could be done to make marine lake a nicer place to visit.

Rhyl is one long stretch of amusement arcades and bedsits.

Stay on the A55 and head to Llandudno. Now that is a gem (although the high street there is also a shadow of it's former self).

keggy1313 · 14/05/2021 09:51

Perthshire in Scotland. So beautiful. Crieff is a lovely town with some great independent shops. Comrie, Dunkeld (love the Birnam Reader bookshop), Aberfeldy. Great scenery, not too busy and lots to do :)

MrsMariaReynolds · 14/05/2021 10:05

The rest of Norfolk is boring as f--- but Norwich city itself is amazing.

LOL on the Hull suggestions. The aquarium is fantastic and knocks the socks off any of the Sealife Centre varieties, but the rest of the city, apart from a small part of the Old Town, is G-R-I-M.

pinkflamingo112 · 14/05/2021 10:54

isle of wight
croyde bay

AlanThePig · 14/05/2021 11:02

Thank you for all the Northumberland recommendations! I’m really rather looking forward to it.
I’ve noted down everywhere that’s been mentioned in the area.

CPsRus · 14/05/2021 11:25

Croydon
Essex
Bude

PopperUppleton · 14/05/2021 13:37
@LakieLady Wells is indeed a city. It's England's smallest.

And I love Bude too (and visited Wray's - the department store - last month)!
Isn't Ripon the smallest city? I believe Wells is beautiful, must go

PopperUppleton · 14/05/2021 13:42

Malton in North Yorkshire and Cockermouth in Cumbria. Lovely independent shops and really friendly people. Two of my favourite places ever
