Underrated places in the UK

I enjoyed reading the thread on overrated places (so strictly this is a TAAT, sorry) but would love to know where in the UK people think is underrated.
Mine is Nantwich. I'd live there like a shot.

Walton. The Docks. Fazakerley. Norris Green. Loads of family up there. Grim grim grim.

ValancyRedfern · 13/05/2021 20:31

Northumberland and the North East in general. Stunning countryside, castles, Hadrian's Wall, beautiful sweeping sandy beaches.

ValancyRedfern · 13/05/2021 20:33

Also the Forest of Dean. My favourite holiday destination in the world.

Tabitha005 · 13/05/2021 20:35

Folkestone, as well as Walmer (near Deal) - both on the Kent coast.

JeanLouiseFinch · 13/05/2021 20:40

Shropshire- Offa’s Dyke, Attingham Park, Wroxeter Roman remains, Shrewsbury, and lots of lovely villages and historic sites.

Livpool · 13/05/2021 20:40

Omagh

Loving all the Liverpool love though!

Will everyone STOP mentioning Northumberland! It's my happy place- been going for years (again this summer) and I do NOT want the entirety of Mumsnet turning up!Grin

AsTheRiverBends · 13/05/2021 20:48

@castemary

Northumberland is not underrated. Some of the villages have no locals living in them any more as every single house is a holiday let or second home.
Yes. I'm really surprised to see places like Alnwick and Bamburgh suggested as 'underrated'. They're quieter out of season, but full of tourists the rest of the time and have a high percentage of holiday properties. We were in Warkworth recently, and I couldn't believe how many of the houses were now holiday lets, completely different to a few years ago.

Suffolk is one of my favourite counties. Lavenham is very touristy, but Long Melford and Clare are quieter, and beautiful. Surprisingly lovely villages in Essex too.

Going much further north, the Cowal Peninsula is probably one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.

I lived in Cambridge for years and think that it's been so over developed that it really isn't the wonderful place it was in say the 70s to the 00s. That said, some of the colleges have beautiful quiet gardens if you know where to go.

@Notavegan

Think I'll plan a trip to Hull on the back of this thread.
Make sure you visit the pub-can’t remember the name-with an old skull behind the bar where they plotted the civil war!
lakesidelife · 13/05/2021 20:57

Northumberland is underrated compared to the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales. And hugely much quieter than Cornwall.

So it depends what you are comparing it to.

Akrotiri1 · 13/05/2021 20:58

We are in Powys in mid wales - stunning countryside and underpopulated, but only a few miles form the Shropshire border so easy to enjoy both counties. Or to venture further into Wales (less than an hr to Snowdonia or the Brecon Beacons etc).

Lovely people on either side of the border and lovely rural feel if you are a nature lover.

I have lived on both sides of the border and Powys and Shropshire both have their charms, but a mid wales post code is a lot more affordable!

Lytham St Anne's. It's lovely for cycling along the seafront. It's near Blackpool but worlds apart”

Lytham St. Annes? No, disagree, it’s flat as a pancake, overpriced housing, no geographical features and very, very boring to live th .....

So, sorry, I nodded off Grin

South east Cornwall, near Plymouth. Everyone races past it to west Cornwall, which is too, too stupid.

caspersmagicaljourney · 13/05/2021 21:18

Lichfield

CatAndHisKit · 13/05/2021 21:21

Northumberland is NOT underated! It's grown hugely in tourism n the last 5 yrs and before people who happened to have visited,. rated it as highly.

Toastiemaker · 13/05/2021 21:23

@AsTheRiverBends the Cowal peninsula and the isle of Bute. Heaven on earth!
We had an amazing holiday there before DD popped out, can't wait to go back.

CatAndHisKit · 13/05/2021 21:24

South east Cornwall, near Plymouth

yes!
and south-central too - we stayed in a modest hotel on the coast near St Austel (not a great town but useful station)and the coastline is simple but so charming - wasn't crowded.

ILoveShula · 13/05/2021 21:27

@WaitinginVain

wheresmymojo, so sick of the Stoke knocking. It’s a brilliant place, the friendliest people. Don’t believe all you hear.
It would be impossible to knock it. Dump of a place.
