Underrated places in the UK

MaMaLa321 · 12/05/2021 17:56

I enjoyed reading the thread on overrated places (so strictly this is a TAAT, sorry) but would love to know where in the UK people think is underrated.
Mine is Nantwich. I'd live there like a shot.

Parts of Kent

HopelesslyOptimistic · 13/05/2021 22:44

The Gower, favourite beach Three Cliff's

Puffalicious · 13/05/2021 22:50

@LongDiscoClara

Northumberland and Glasgow(best city ever)
Yeah! We clearly have the same taste!
Puffalicious · 13/05/2021 22:57

Don't mind mentioning it as it takes forever to get to: Harris. Just breathtaking and miles upon miles of perfect beaches with noone on them. Unfortunately Skye is just ridiculously overcrowded and is ruined by tourism now. One of my favourite places on the planet is unfortunately going that way too: the sands of Morar near Arisaig/ Mallaig. It's such a shame. (Unless you go out of season. We once had wall to wall sunshine in April).

Love a place called Scratby near Great Yarmouth. It’s so quiet and peaceful with a lovely beach and seals in the sea. Also love Portsmouth and Hayling island for its history and beaches and Leicester for its history (Richard iii, Bradgate Park, Lady Jane Grey, and for its diversity.

BBOA · 13/05/2021 22:59

Pembrokeshire! Like Cornwall but less crowded!

MargaretFraggle · 13/05/2021 23:18

Agree MissKeithsNiece.

Furries · 13/05/2021 23:24

Agree with pp re North Essex. Lovely countryside, a number of pretty villages. Frinton and Walton might not be the most exciting coastal places, but the beaches are large, plenty of space.

Elsiebear90 · 13/05/2021 23:31

Birmingham

Affordable houses, great shops, bars, restaurants, clubs, concert and theatre venues etc, good transport links and job opportunities, some really nice suburbs, schools and unis.

ellyeth · 13/05/2021 23:56

I agree about the Gower - it's beautiful.

Battle in East Sussex.

BackforGood · 13/05/2021 23:59

I agree with those saying that people are using different criteria on this thread.

Some people are just listing places "that are nice" which is different from the question which (to me) implies "that you were surprised how nice they are"

Also, depends if you are talking about "to go for a holiday" or "to move to / to live"

LuluJakey1 · 14/05/2021 00:05

@AlanThePig

Northumberland is beautiful. We go on holiday there most years; it really is my favourite part of the UK

I've heard this a lot since we booked. Really looking forward to exploring it.

If you visit, go up the coast to Lindisfarne and walk on the beaches there and at Bamburgh, have fish at chips and a drink in the sun at The Ship in Low Newton by the Sea and walk along the beach to Dunstunburgh Castle afterwards. Then go in a sunset boat trip from Seahouses round the Farne Islands and see how utterly beautiful it all is.
ellyeth · 14/05/2021 00:20

Agree re Somerset and Shropshire

Forest of Bowland and Beacon Fell in Lancashire

ellyeth · 14/05/2021 00:23

My interpretation of "underrated" would be places I had never heard of or had never heard complimentary reports about. I suppose if a whole area is fairly unfamiliar to you places that locals probably already rate are a wonderful surprise.

Until I lived in Lancashire, I had never heard of the Forest of Bowland or Beacon Fell.

lakesidelife · 14/05/2021 00:27

It is true that what makes a good holiday isn't great to have to live in.
I would totally recommend Isle of Bute and Cowal Peninsular as a less known holiday destination as someone else has done but not as somewhere to live.

AMillionMilesAway · 14/05/2021 00:50

Essex- well not all of it! But parts, especially the more rural parts.

pinkprosseco · 14/05/2021 02:35

@osbertthesyrianhamster

Northumberland
Completely agree. Especially the coast. And places like Rothbury.
pinkprosseco · 14/05/2021 02:39

Isle of Wight

BumCat · 14/05/2021 03:42

Well-next-the-sea in Norfolk.

Harmonypuss · 14/05/2021 05:01

All good that people are making places but not many are giving reasons for their choices.

I'm looking at downsizing and moving away from Birmingham (lived here 53yrs, need a change of scenery) and thought this thread might give me some ideas but place names are no use to me without people's reasons for choosing them.

RaeRaeMama · 14/05/2021 05:30

Filey.
Came here to say Filey

I want to add Lincoln, I visited and could believe how lovely it was

Re my post, I think I might need to defend my choice of Bradford! Yes its sister Leeds is all hard and shiny and glossed over, and the money is there, but Bradford has some wonderful Victorian buildings, a massive piazza with watery accents, an ice rink ( still I think?) the Media Museum ( even though getting rid of the film and photography exhibits was criminal) great Indian/ Bangladesh food, hills and vistas of the surrounding dales. It's a place with lots of history and the people are nicer than them in Leeds Wink
I went to Bradford for the first time last year, having always been told it's a "shit hole" and when I went I thought...

This is nice. There is some really beautiful architecture and I love the mix of new and old.

I have no idea about further out of the town centre but I was pleasantly surprised. We went to the national science and media museum... it was fantastic... and come to think of it free which is crazy because it was so good

A few people have mentioned Hull, I went into Hull Old Town and bloody loved it. So pretty and again, some fantastic museums that are free (crazy!)

RaeRaeMama · 14/05/2021 05:47

@Alleycat1

East Riding of Yorkshire. Everybody raves about the Dales and Moors but the Wolds are also lovely (and property is a lot cheaper).
So true!

I live in North Yorkshire but grew up for the most part in East Yorkshire, the house price difference is ridiculous.

Driffield for example is a nice, clean, friendly place to live with some lovely villages outside of it.

Trappedonanisland · 14/05/2021 06:00

Glasgow ,Liverpool ,Brum . Also Kilmartin Glen (magical place imo) .

Toddlerteaplease · 14/05/2021 06:26

@MargateSands

Nottingham seems to get a lot of stick but I lived there for a few years and loved it. Go back regularly for visits too.
Have you been to the city centre recently?!!
