Underrated places in the UK

I enjoyed reading the thread on overrated places (so strictly this is a TAAT, sorry) but would love to know where in the UK people think is underrated.
Mine is Nantwich. I'd live there like a shot.

Northumberland and Glasgow(best city ever)

There is a lot more to Liverpool than just the places you have mentioned.

Jellybabiesforbreakfast · 13/05/2021 21:39

Plymouth. A surprising amount to do and within a stone's throw of some beautiful places, including the Tamar Valley.

Just don't walk the wrong way at night!

Jessicafirsttimer · 13/05/2021 21:39

Northumbria!

JaceLancs · 13/05/2021 21:39

Lincoln

Northumbria!
Northumberland
RampantIvy · 13/05/2021 21:44

Oh, and yes to Lincoln.

Re Cockermouth, we had a week self-catering there a few years ago as a change from the busier side of the Lake District, and we really enjoyed the town, plus the chance to visit the coast and some of the quieter parts nearby.

ILoveShula · 13/05/2021 21:52

Cockermouth is nice, as are a lot of places in Cumbria that are not in the Lake District.

TheMagicDeckchair · 13/05/2021 21:55

Glad to see Beverley in East Yorks get a mention. Often overlooked in favour of York, Harrogate etc. Helmsley is a lovely market town too. Scarborough has beautiful beaches but the town is very run down.

I stayed in Glasgow a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised what a vibrant city it is. Arundel in West Sussex is a lovely place we visited that I’d never heard of. Also had a couple of mini breaks near Ludlow- beautiful area.

TatianaBis · 13/05/2021 21:58

Bosham Creek,, W. Sussex.

Coventry
Beautiful cathedral, just stunning. Probably the most moving building I’ve visited after the Taj Mahal. More people need to visit.
Alwayscalminacrisis · 13/05/2021 22:02

@Bookworm65 - saw enough over visits spanning 30 years. There’s nothing anyone could say to convince me otherwise

pollymere · 13/05/2021 22:02

The Chilterns. They should be a protected National Park as well as an AONB. Beautiful countryside and walks.

MarshmallowAra · 13/05/2021 22:02

The North coast of Northern Ireland, from Derry/Londonderry around to the Glens of Antrim. Couldn't even begin to cover all the beaches and scenic spots.

pollyglot · 13/05/2021 22:10

Orkney. The Outer Hebrides. Arran. Littleborough, (Notts.). The Scottish Borders. Lincoln.

Abracadabra12345 · 13/05/2021 22:10

Coventry
I’m glad you’ve mentioned Coventry as I want to persuade a friend to give it a go. It’s on her train line and would be a really convenient halfway point. I know it’s been awarded City of Culture for 2021 and it has a cathedral (I now want to visit it!). What else?

I love Arundel! I visit at the slightest excuse. A friend loves Beverley. Ludlow is also beautiful if over-priced
Summerdayshaze · 13/05/2021 22:14

Dundee

Beck30 · 13/05/2021 22:15

Difficult one as there is a subtle difference between 'under'-rated (i.e. people have actively thought about somewhere and concluded it is a bit naff) and 'not'-rated (many of the rural areas mentioned so far could be such 'hidden gems'). But anyway;

Rural areas;
South Shropshire (Shropshire Hills around Craven Arms / Welsh borders)
Wiltshire (esp West Wiltshire - not near Stonehenge) such as either side of Meere and the whole Cranborne Chase area - as well as nearby East Dorset
East Yorkshire
Quantocks

towns / cities;
Ledbury (probably 'not' rather than 'under'-rated)
Norwich (a pub for every day of the year??)
Preston
Leamington Spa

@Abracadabra12345

Worth a visit for sure. The Coventry Cathedral/the ruins (from the Blitz). Many parts nearby are particularly very historical. Herbert Art Gallery, Transport museum, Belgrade Theatre, and the Warwick Arts Centre off the top of my head.

Some nice restaurants near the main Lady Godiva, and the Telegraph Hotel is nice 👍.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/05/2021 22:30

I love Liverpool. Lancaster is lovely. I was surprised by Leeds. The shopping is great and it's got that big city vibe.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/05/2021 22:32

I was born and brought up
In Leicester and can't believe how much better it is now. I now live in Nottingham, the city centre is a complete dump compared to Leicester.

MissKeithsNeice · 13/05/2021 22:34

Yup, a definition of underrated is undoubtedly needed here.

So underrated would be Hull and Reading.

That's not the same as rated but not previously on your radar.

(See Chester, Cardiff, any part of the Lake District, Aldeburgh, Glasgow, Pembrokeshire, Edinburgh (!), the Outer Hebrides, Northumberland generally but also specific tourist hotspots places such as Bamburgh and Holy Island.
