Overrated places in the UK

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 17:12

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

@SmiledWithTheRisingSun

Jeeeze! Where DO you all like????
Where’s the fun in sharing that? Then everyone will go and we’ll end up hating it.

@Gladimnotcampinginthisweather

Smidgenofapigeon Norfolk. I know lots of people who love it, but it just doesn't appeal. The Isle of Wight
I wish it didn't appeal to far more people then we might be able to get to places in Summer!
Bearnecessity · 12/05/2021 18:58

Ilchester

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/05/2021 18:58

In England I would say Gloucester.
In Scotland I would say Livingston.

FangsForTheMemory · 12/05/2021 18:58

People who are saying London's crap or shopping on Oxford Street is rubbish, I bet you go to there once a year, by coach, to do your Christmas shopping. You get off the bus, having sat there for five hours, stagger up and down Oxford Street half a dozen times, have lunch in Nando's and wonder why it's the same as back home.

That's because you're doing it all wrong.

Scarby9 · 12/05/2021 18:58

Brighton Beach.
I grew up in Northumberland - that's not a beach! It's just a pebbly edge of the land.

nickymanchester · 12/05/2021 18:58

@Elderflower14

Southwold but I live near there and get fed up of there being no where to park when we go there...
Really?

Oops, we're probably part of the problem then.

We live about 100 miles away from Southwold and, pre-covid, Southwold was always a lovely day out at the weekend with our DC (occasionally stayed over and made it a weekend).

Other places that were great to visit along that coast were Aldeburgh and Maldon or, going up into Norfolk, Cromer and Sheringham.

Although thinking about it, locals in those other towns probably also think that they're a bit over rated as well. But, coming from a former new town in East Anglia, these places are absolutely lovely to visit.

Apologies for taking up the parking spaces!

Irishterrier · 12/05/2021 18:59

Brighton - grim, filled with crims down from London, or trustfund people/north London creatives thinking they're being brilliant and original living in a place filled with people just like them.

Oxford - trafficky, crap shops

IOW - honestly it's a dump. I have had some fun times there, but it boggles my mind that rich people go to eg Seaview to sit on a tiny crap beach and stare at Portsmouth over the murky water.

Hastings - dirty and shit and filled with the same sort of people as Brighton.

LoveFall · 12/05/2021 18:59

I agree, Stonehenge. Much, much better on TV!

And Centre Parcs did nothing for me except get our family together for a few days. Common areas not very clean and weirdly expensive activities. Not to mention bad food.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/05/2021 18:59

I was also underwhelmed by Edinburgh. I just don't get the hype at all. It's nice enough but nothing special. Also find the Peak District very depressing.

FatherBuzzCagney · 12/05/2021 18:59

Gladimnot that's interesting - I haven't been back for a little while but it obviously hasn't improved. The fact that every family seems to own half a dozen Chelsea tractors in a city not built for modern traffic doesn't help the centre, either.

AlphabetDinosaur · 12/05/2021 18:59

Chester.

Blabla81 · 12/05/2021 18:59

@SmidgenofaPigeon

Im from Norfolk originally and am touched no one has said any bits of it are overrated...yet 😅
I’m from Norfolk too - in the fens. I love it here - we get the most amazing skyscapes. A lot of people don’t rate it and think it’s bleak and depressing. I think it’s beautiful.
Rosehip10 · 12/05/2021 19:00

Stratford-upon-Avon

mrwalkensir · 12/05/2021 19:00

Pebble beaches are very rare I think? Pretty much only us and Canada...

SunflowersAndLavender · 12/05/2021 19:00

Hebden Bridge.

Arghmyhip · 12/05/2021 19:01

@MrsMoastyToasty

In England I would say Gloucester. In Scotland I would say Livingston.
OP was asking about places everyone else seems to LOVE - I really don't think that description applies to Gloucester!
TheWashingMachine · 12/05/2021 19:01

Brighton

CandidaAlbicans2 · 12/05/2021 19:01

Cornish coastline (I've walked it all). I was so excited to go as so many people told me how "stunning" it is, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. It's beautiful but, for me, over-hyped, and the place is pretty much shut in the winter. Oh, and lots of locals hate tourists too!

Edinburgh. Again, maybe my expectations were too high as I've heard how great it is so many times, but I just didn't feel it. It's nice but no more than that.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 12/05/2021 19:01

No-one comes to NI (which is a bloody relief) but Portballintrae is overrated; full of rich, entitled, second home owners. Portrush has far more but looks like it's heading the same way.

Don't anyone go to Ballycastle, it's beautiful and I don't want it overrun Grin

JudgeJ · 12/05/2021 19:02

@DinosaurDiana

The Trafford Centre makes me feel claustrophobic. Take the top off and our more stairs/exits in and it would be ok. Oh, and some decent shops too.
All indoor shopping places give me the creeps. The Trafford Centre is just one long traffic jam, whoever allowed the design with the access places must have been mad.
darkpink · 12/05/2021 19:02

Exeter - dirty and rundown, most of the good bits were bombed to smithereens in the war, loads of pound shops etc, awful traffic system that takes years to get your head round and terrible congestion and pollution. People not very friendly either.

Notnownotneverever · 12/05/2021 19:02

Oh wow. I can’t believe people have said Cornwall!
But Brighton - yep. It is not all that at all.

ArnottsUnderpass · 12/05/2021 19:02

Glastonbury.

Expected mystical, pretty, ancient. Got a patchouli scented weird ghost of a place with a distinctly unnerving vibe. I was so disappointed.

Wells was gorgeous, mind you.

Also on the "is that it?" vibe: Lands End. Overcommercialised tatfest. Dire

borntobequiet · 12/05/2021 19:02

@Tambora

DH (going somewhat further afield) nominates the Grand Canyon.
Thank you, because that reminded me of Cheddar Gorge, totally spoilt by the tacky shops and cafes at the entrance, some of which would have looked dated in 1970. Put me right off.
