Overrated places in the UK

Fixitup2 · 12/05/2021 17:12

What are your over rated places in the U.K. that everyone else seems to love?

Mine is the Peak District which imo has mediocre scenery spoilt by too many roads and too many people. I hate it and only ever agree to go if there’s nowhere else and we need to stop somewhere that way.

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Agree with whoever said Melton Mowbray Grin. We stopped there on the way from A to B, for a night. Expected even a smidge of quaint ness.....fuck all.
Melton Mowbray has a pork pie factory. I am amazed that anyone expected quaintness because of a food factory.
Figgygal · 12/05/2021 18:51

Bath
It’s just boring and not even picturesque
I live locally and don’t ever suggest it to visitors

Peregrina · 12/05/2021 18:51

I was going to go there for the bank holiday weekend and then read about the dire parking situation, so I’m not missing anything then ?

That was the Derbyshire bit, I am not sure exactly where abouts though.
As the poster above says, Buxton although in Derbyshire, is near the Cheshire/Staffs bit and is quieter.

Isle of Skye

Miserable and unwelcoming

And midges

ArcheryAnnie · 12/05/2021 18:51

I am very rarely bored, and can find something interesting in almost anywhere.

However, Banbury has me beat. It has anti-charisma, for a town. It has a local museum (I bloody love local museums, especially when they are a bit dated) and a canal, and STILL it's dull. Dull, dull, dull. How can you be dull when you have a canal and a museum?

MrsLaura · 12/05/2021 18:51
  • Bath. I have wanted to visit for years and finally got round to it last summer due to Covid stopping abroad holidays. I didn’t really like it, was pretty in places but I wouldn’t go back and wish I hadn’t bothered.
  • Stone henge. Some people go mad for it but it’s just rocks with uninteresting history. It’s also 21.50£ Per adult if your not a member which is sodding expensive. Laughable is the website describes it as one of the most impressive sights of the world, I mean that’s over hype right in that sentence.
  • Brighton. It just gives me a weird vibe, just feels a bit grim and pebble beaches are a no also they don’t have the beauty of sand.
  • The Lake District. Not very impressive, so crowded, so much dog poo when we visited ( why do people just not pick it up in the Lake District? I’m assuming it’s the tourist fault by still )
  • Lands end

I don’t get why people say London as in I hate it all, at least say where you went and what you disliked. Yes London has bad parts, but also many nice ones. Same with most cities ( I.e Paris so shit In most of it but doesn’t have a decent area )

MinnieMountain · 12/05/2021 18:51

York. Apart from the National Railway Museum.
Stratford on Avon. I went there for a friend’s birthday party. Nothing but signs pointing to Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway.
The Cotswolds. The odd pretty village but the countryside is average.
Oxford.
The Norfolk coast soon feels dull.

Hellcatspangle · 12/05/2021 18:51

I agree with Cornwall - went once never again.

Well you obviously didn't visit the whole of cornwall if you only went once 😂

Dumbledoresgirl · 12/05/2021 18:52

I'd say East Anglia, or perhaps narrow it down to the Broads and Norwich area. But, having already been offended on this thread by people naming places I hold very highly, I would qualify my choice by saying I hate flat places with huge expanses of sky. I am sure others would find East Anglia very appealing.

HelpfulBelle · 12/05/2021 18:52

This thread is miserable, I love all these places! We live in a beautiful country, there are gorgeous views and interesting corners everywhere. The weather sometimes lets us down Grin

I have a soft spot for Oxford, because I live here and it's amazing. My DDad's family are Cornish and there are some stunning spots there. I love Bath, Bristol, Cambridge, Brighton, London (lived there for years) and all the other towns/cities mentioned.

Never been to Dungeness, mind...

NowRightHere · 12/05/2021 18:52

Oxford Street, there are so many nicer places to shop in London.

Cornwall, overcrowded in the summer and also high amounts of deprivation away from the popular tourist areas - that’s not a criticism of the deprived areas.

Oly4 · 12/05/2021 18:53

Cornwall
But London is great

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 12/05/2021 18:53

I love the Lake District, but now I follow Max Out in the Lake District, and I get all the good bits - beautiful scenery without getting cold or wet, and Springer spaniels without having to clean up the dog poo.

balconpic · 12/05/2021 18:54

Stonehenge
Edinburgh

JudgeJ · 12/05/2021 18:54

@Tagaagajavdv

Yorkshire, I’m from there. People who aren’t from there tell me how ‘nice’ it is. It isn’t
You can't ditch the whole of Yorkshire, and I say that as a Lancastrian who used to live there! There are some lovely places, you don't have to go far from the grotty bits to reach wonderful scenery, eg the outskirts of Bradford.
Keepyourdistance000 · 12/05/2021 18:54

Longleat, Chessington, Thorpe Park.

Norfolk.

Most of the East Coast (but not the North East Coast, which is breathtakingly beautiful).

Blackpool.

HopelesslyOptimistic · 12/05/2021 18:54

Thank God the gorgeous Gower hasn't appeared. Stay back!

CuddlyDudley71 · 12/05/2021 18:55

Stonehenge is a English Heritage site.

Keepyourdistance000 · 12/05/2021 18:55

Stonehenge - a pile of rocks in the middle of a field by one of UK's main routes to and from the West Country.

DynamoKev · 12/05/2021 18:55

@MasterBeth

West Bridgford.

This suburb of Nottingham will mean nothing to most of you but to the people of Nottingham it is the Fulham, the Altrincham, the Morningside, the St Albans, the Leamington, the Clifton (Bristol one) of the East Midlands. Apparently.

It is supposedly very Mumsnet and naive and desirable, but you’d be hard pressed to find anything remarkable about it - a pretty ugly main street filled with midmarket chain restaurants, no decent pubs, uniform Victorian streets and peopled with rather too many self-satisfied arseholes. Not awful, but awfully overrated.

Oh yes - West Fucking Bridgford!
HelpfulBelle · 12/05/2021 18:56

@AIMummy

I live a few minutes from Bicester Village and I never go there because it's heinous.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 12/05/2021 18:56

Jeeeze!
Where DO you all like????

PhilCornwall1 · 12/05/2021 18:56

@CuddlyDudley71

Stonehenge is a English Heritage site.
Well, they need to get their act together and finish it!
Geminijust · 12/05/2021 18:57

Agree with Brighton, never really got it. Also not impressed with West Withering beach. It was winter and I ended up with sandy eyes but imagine summer would be telling in a different way - rammed!

Flappityflippers1 · 12/05/2021 18:57
