Unexpectedly disgusting food

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

@Sparklingbrook

Itsu Seaweed Thins Sea Salt are revolting. Bought them as a healthy snack but has to have a Haribo to take the taste away.

Opened the thread to say exactly this. I bought some for the same reason and nearly vomited. Gave them to DH who is renowned for being able to eat mostly anything and even he couldn't eat more than a couple. Grin Worst thing I've attempted to eat in ages.

Whoever mentioned fruit teas I hear you. They smell nice and then they literally taste of nothing.

The late, great Victoria Wood described fruit tea as "tasting like hot water served in a cup that had once been used for Ribena".

So agree on the Hersheys. It tastes so soapy to me. Just like eating a bar of soap. Can't understand why anyone would think it was chocolate.

Salmon.
As in salmon “slices” or slivers or whatever the hell it is on a sandwich.
My afternoon tea treat was totally ruined with this shite.

Quorn mince.

Ordered spag bol at work, spotted it was quorn too late.

It was disgusting. Funny knobbly solid jelly-like bits awash in gravy.

Never again.

Though I've never understood veg/vegan 'lookalikes'.

LOL that you expected a Slimming World beef stroganoff from Iceland to taste good Grin

May have been said but Darkmilk from Cadbury’s. Not as good as Bourneville. Not as good as Dairy Milk. Though they’re both fucked now anyway with all the oily fat in them.

I love it if I can find a Camembert that tastes of farm!

Oh yeah agree with PP. Hershey’s tastes like bile.

Yes fruit teas always look so promising and yet you get hot weak squash, which weirdly my Mother would make me drink as a cure for constipation as a child.

@CityCommuter

When I first went on holiday to the USA as a teenager in the 1990's I couldn't wait to try Hershey's chocolate that I'd seen on lots of American TV shows and films...

Anyway after the first bite I was sure it had gone off as the taste is so odd it can only be described as tasting like vomit! That's the nearest description to it... The chocolate hadn't gone off, it actually really does taste like that (to anyone who hasn't tried it yet btw).... I couldn't and still can't understand how my American relatives go wild for this taste and love that chocolate... I'm NOT exaggerating btw, it's truly yucky!

Agreed! Vomit us exactly what it tastes like!

I’m a chocoholic and can eat most, but that? Binned!

Omg.

I am so stupid. I have just realised that TURKISH delight is from Turkey. Blush

Really grim for me was most of the stuff on a seafood platter in Brittany- sea snails, whelks etc... I was hoping for more lobster, and oysters!

Some soba noodles I had in a restaurant once. Looked like worms swimming in muddy water and tasted as I'd imagine they would.

Oh and ordinary tea from Starbucks. Tastes like someones put a squirt of anti bac soap in it (and this was pre Covid).

Sometimes an apple can look delicious but be flavourless and mushy....what I imagine a raw potato would taste like!

Also, I often find that French patisserie style cakes look amazing but are often very disappointing.

Oh and I can't stand bananas, the taste, the texture, the smell, the feel.....struggle to be in the same room as someone eating one!

Also pizza express pizza from the supermarket is really not nice and over priced

I hate Hersheys too- vile!

M&S macaroni cheese was recommended by a friend as indulgent and delicious. It turned out to be creamy, but tasteless, expensive and an entire days amount of fat in 1 serving! Angry

Unless you put them in a muffin and for some reason cooked they are fine yet raw just watery and tasteless

OMG, American chocolate is vile - tastes like some kind of powdered shite invented in wartime.

And yes to wood pigeon - bleargh Envy. I love game and rare meat, but the first time I tried that was the last; just chewy, bummy, almost raw flobble.

Worst thing ever though was pike. Ordered it in a very chichi London restaurant and it was utterly fucking grim. Literally tasted of mud, in a thin grey gravy. Most disgusting thing I’ve ever tasted in my life, completely inedible, chewy and full of bones. DH almost choked laughing as he tucked into his steak ...

Turkish Delight.

The disappointment was epic after watching Chronicles of Narnia.

This!

I''m addicted to these. Wasabi would be my first choice but I love the salted ones too.

I'm also a big fan of Turkish Delight so if anyone has any seaweed thins or Turkish delight that they wish to dispose of, send them here.

The PP who mentioned keto recipes reminded me, I saw one at Christmas for parma ham sauteed Brussels sprouts. Sounded lovely. I love all the ingredients - sprouts, parma ham, garlic, parmesan, everything. We had a big block of really good quality parma ham in the fridge, purchased from a continental market. YUM, I thought. How wrong I was. I binned it after 2 miserable mouthfuls & got some cheese & sauerkraut instead. And some more slices of the delicious ham.

Generally agree! Although bought a punnet a few months ago for my toddler and those ones were amazing, full of flavour and not mushy! Only time I have ever enjoyed them....
