That Freddie dying isn't a spoiler FFS

Got this 'friend' who is the first to jump in at every opportunity to say 'oh, you've done that wrong'.

One of her hallmarks is calling you out when you've supposedly let others down.

Her call out today on a WA group is when I've said after watching Bohemian Rhapsody how tragic for poor Freddie Mercury to die at such a young age from aids.

Her response? Spoiler alert! 'Ruined that for me now'. It's a public fact not a work of fiction. What next, letting her know the titanic sinks!

Any suggestions on a response that is better than F off?

Or AIBU

I said "just checking you do know FM was a real person

She's replied "Of course I do, I just didn't know specifics

I want to know specifically what it was she didn’t know

@wellwellwellhereweare

I said "just checking you do know FM was a real person"?

She's replied "Of course I do, I just didn't know specifics".

Still no comments from anyone else. I suspect they are giggling and/or eating popcorn 🍿

I'm assuming the 'specifics' include that he's dead!

This is hilarious. 😀😀
CaptainHammer · 09/05/2021 19:35

Hahaha! If she knows who Freddie Mercury is and that he died how the fuck does she not know he died from aids?!
Also that film came out 3 years ago not your fault she hasn’t seen it yet.

JudgeJ · 09/05/2021 19:35

@JenerationH

Not knowing that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father or that Freddie Mercury is dead are things that you should be embarrassed about, not things that you should be angry with others for 'spoiling'.

Children are the exception, but as an adult...? Just pure ignorance!

Absolute rubbish! I do loath inverse snobbery, if I were to say you should be embarrassed for not knowing the intricacies of a Chekhov book or one of the rarer Shakespeare plays you would probably call me a snob! I've never seen Star Wars, my knowledge comes from buying presents for my grandson or standing in the queue for the ride in Florida! I actually WA'd my daughter to ask who the gold figurine was called. It's all about not liking sci-fi, I wouldn't go to seen Chariots of Fire when it first came out.
Eskarina1 · 09/05/2021 19:35

I find the idea that you'd maintain suspense about whether a real human being died in order to make a film more enjoyable... Distasteful

@Badgerlock42 😂😂😂 Lower Loxley is at least 10 storeys high...

Badgerlock42 · 09/05/2021 19:38

I would not grieve if Freddie Archers died. Or Jill. Or Peggy. Or David. Or Lily...

Remind me why I listen again?!

A woman after me own heart @harriethoyle.
I ended up only listening because of the brilliance of some of the contributors to the "Diss The Archers" section of the old BBC messageboard.

I wouldn't grieve Freddie, but would MUCH rather see his ghastly mother Lizard properly deaded. Preferably in tandem with her daughter's unsuitable, aged cocklodger of a b/f, & in a compromising enough dead-duo scenario to send Lily round the fruit loop.

Those remaining Pargetters have it coming.
"The Grundys & Their Oppressors" indeed, as I believe Neil Kinnock termed the Archers :)

Mumoblue · 09/05/2021 19:38

Certain things are just assumed to be common knowledge after a period of time, I think. There is definitely an expiration date on “spoilers”.

I was discussing the game “Hades” with my ex once and mentioned something that hadn’t come up in the game yet and he asked me if I’d looked up spoilers. I said: uh... spoilers for Greek mythology?!

chesterelly · 09/05/2021 19:38

I took a spare ticket from a friend and went with her and her parents to see Jesus Christ Superstar. At the end her DF said " well I enjoyed that but I wasn't expecting it to end like that" then couldn't understand why we fell about laughing. We also enjoyed it despite realising that even Andrew Lloyd Webber wouldn't try and re-write the Bible.

Badgerlock42 · 09/05/2021 19:41

Just being optimistic about Freddie from the title (have missed a few episodes!)

Grin Grin Grin

& have a Wine I nicked from Lower Loxley's cellarage :)

harriethoyle · 09/05/2021 19:44

@Badgerlock42 oh yes! Imagine if lizzy and Russell died, entwined!!

Annoy · 09/05/2021 19:45

🤣🤣

harriethoyle · 09/05/2021 19:45

I quite like Vince Casey though. Mainly because dreary David doesn't...

Actually, I didn't expect it to end the way it did.... um, more the original non-extended version of Mark than the other gospels iykwim?
Badgerlock42 · 09/05/2021 19:46

She's one of those people that has to bring everything back to her and her feelings.

Like, every week is an anniversary of a tragedy. It's been a year since I had sour milk in my tea, it's been three years since a bad haircut, it's been four years since the last custard cream in my packet was broken.

Arrrrgh insufferable!! Angry

How is she going to take it when she finally realises Moby Dick isn't a porno?

3CCC · 09/05/2021 19:48

This is why there should be a general etiquette rule about how long is it until it's acceptable to drop spoilers.
Especially since the advent of Netflix etc.
Potential spoiler alert:

Rachel didn't get on the plane 15 years ago. But it recently went on Netflix which means it's more readily available to people who have never watched Friends.

Or say Pride & Prejudice is I think in Netflix. But the book was written 200 years + ago But is it still a spoiler

There needs to be some sort of statute of limitations

This isn't inverse snobbery. Believe it or not I've never seen Star Wars - but I know that Vader is Luke and Leia's father (hey, guess what - they're TWINS! oooooooooooooooh SPOILER!).

I've never read or seen Hamlet but I know the basic plot.
I don't know the plot of Troilus and Cressida, but I wouldn't be cross with someone for 'spoiling' it, because it's 400 fecking years old!!

I seriously think that expecting others not to talk about classics due to their own ignorance is a form of narcissism or something similar.

But the thing about classics is that a new generation comes to them afresh each time - I was quite cross when someone gave away what happened to one of the characters in Little Women, I was enjoying the new adaptation and it’s a book I’ve just never read.

To assume that everyone has had access to the classics growing up - that’s the snobbery.

Btw op yanbu. Your friend is barking

SirGawain · 09/05/2021 19:50

At the time the Titanic film came out my sister worked with a young lad who had seen the film and was excitedly telling his colleague that she ship sank in the end. To paraphrase Michael Cane, “not many people know that”.

LesleyA · 09/05/2021 19:52

Type ‘oh did you think he was still alive’? So she looks a bit stupid. So she needs to undermine you. I’d call her out about calling you out.

Specifics? Freddie Mercury is possibly one of the most famous people to have died of AIDS.
I’ve never heard of anything less spoiler-ish (is there a better/ real word for that?)
