AIBU?

That Freddie dying isn't a spoiler FFS

Got this 'friend' who is the first to jump in at every opportunity to say 'oh, you've done that wrong'.

One of her hallmarks is calling you out when you've supposedly let others down.

Her call out today on a WA group is when I've said after watching Bohemian Rhapsody how tragic for poor Freddie Mercury to die at such a young age from aids.

Her response? Spoiler alert! 'Ruined that for me now'. It's a public fact not a work of fiction. What next, letting her know the titanic sinks!

Any suggestions on a response that is better than F off?

Or AIBU

And what's the Chariots of Fire thing?

JudgeJ said up the thread It's all about not liking sci-fi, I wouldn't go to seen Chariots of Fire when it first came out when we were discussing Darth Vader being Luke's father.

Trouble is, Chariots of Fire isn't sci-fi - it's based around the true story of the British Olympic team in 1924.

Also never knew there were so many Freddies in the world. Archers, Bates Motel, Friday 13th.

Isn't Friday 13th Jason Vorhee?
Freddie (Kruger) is Nightmare on Elm Street.

I have a friend like yours OP. All about her & way over dramatic about some stuff...has a penchant where she says ' You told me XY, I remember you saying' & I have to call her out on it because whatever it is in untrue or incorrect & I knew so & therefore def did not say XY. And then she gets huffy. All for the drama...it is tiring tbh...but otherwise she's a good friend.

Poor Freddie. He’s just getting his shot together. And his mother would be a nightmare if something did happen. But maybe seeing Joy Horville naked was too much to take.

You must live in the same village as my uncle. He ran the local post office and a customer mentioned how sad it was that Freddie Mercury had died. My uncle asked "what part of the village did he live in?" Grin

Hello Janine ,
I'm sure that most people know that Freddie Mercury died as it is based on a true story. Thanks for correcting me though !

She’d hate my mum she just had to ruin things. When ‘Last Christmas’ cam me out a few years ago I didn’t get around to seeing it before Christmas. So she asks ‘Have you seen it?’ I told her no and she told me the major plot twist…. I said ‘why did you do that?’ She just shrugged and continued talking shite!

It’s one thing to ‘spoil’ a fictitious (book-based) movie such as Little Women, or Star Wars, Thelma & Louise, etc - that’s just twattish and socially clueless.

As the OP says though, there’s no ‘spoiling’ historic events. Grin She deserves everything she gets, in that instance.

P.S. I wonder how many more people will come on to say, ‘better tell her not to watch The Crown’...

Tenuous link here. When we watched Whitehouse Farm last year (January 2020 before covid hit this country seems like a 100 years ago). Jeremy Bamber played by Freddie Fox ( the Freddie link)..
I said to DD "what a slimy tw## how could he carry on when he had done that."
She said incredulously "spoiler alert thanks mum!"
I was like but it really happened how can it be a spoiler alert!
Like pps have said how can it be a spoiler alert when it happened in real life. Surely the story is the plot or in the case of WHF how they caught Jeremy is the story.

@Elai1978

I had a work friend who was most annoyed that the trailer for titanic showed it sinking, she didn't realise it was a real event. Some people have very limited general knowledge

Not really sure how you’d go through life and not know about that. I’d say it’s a bit more than general knowledge.

Lots of people just don't pay attention to stuff happening, either around them.... Or actually ever engage with stuff before they were born....or think they should have a nodding acquaintance with cultural /hostircla references...

Remember catching a daytime quiz and the bloke answered (seriously...) I wouldn't know that, it was before my time... In response to question what year ww2 endedGrin...

Also with loads of satellite channels, its so much easier to avoid news... Years ago in prehistory... As kids, we had to sit through the news to get to magic roundabout...

I can sort of see the point in some cases. Like I was vaguely aware of the Aaron Hernandez case. I didn't really know the details and was interested in the Netflix documentary from that point of view. It was maybe not such a well known case in the UK. I think with a really famous case, like the OJ Simpson case, which had international press coverage, I would expect most people to know roughly what happened.

I think most people know that Freddie Mercury died of AIDs, so I wouldn't consider that a spoiler alert but if someone told me they were going to watch a film or a TV show, I wouldn't say anything about the plot just in case. Even with older shows or films like The Wire or Thelma and Louise, I think it's a bit shitty to give away the plot.

But, yeah, things like not knowing The Titanic sunk or not knowing that Diana died in a car crash is kind of shocking for me.

Even though it was in 'my era' i have never seen Thelma and Louise. Watching Gogglebox quite recently they showed (spoiler alert) the scene where the car goes off a cliff. I obviously didn't shout spoiler alert i have had over 2 decades to watch it.
Surely there is quite a short cut off where if someone doesn't want something spoiling they should just bloody watch it.
The afternoons sports results because you've recorded the game to watch that night here the result yes annoying but for someone to say a few days later Man U did well on Saturday well just get on and watch it.
A film from a few years ago ridiculous. And if OP's friend hasn't watched then stop spouting on WhatsApp chats and spend the time watching the damn film.
Anyway i wouldn't watch Bohemian Rhapsody more fictitious than The Crown. It makes out Freddie had been putting his solo career before the band and they just got back together desperate for success at Live Aid. No mention of 1984 album The Works or their gigs in Sun City 6 months before Live Aid ignoring the Boycott's because of Apartheid. No mention of Brian and Roger's solo ventures which happened before Freddie's. I hate the film for it's portrayal of Freddie. Much prefer Rocket Man for a biopic.

Surely it was a joke. Do you think you perceive her so negatively that her humour will pass you by? And you don’t want her to be funny because that too was a micro aggression, changing the tone and not empathising with you.She has a need to undermine you, you could say ‘O dear’ in a condescending way. It has nothing to do with spoilers.

To assume that everyone has had access to the classics growing up - that’s the snobbery

No moresnobby than assuming that everyone has access to Star Wars etc.

Ha I just spoiled Unforgotten for my AC. They got me into or so watched everything to catch up with latest series. When talking about programmes watched I said "don't think I'll watch Unforgotten anymore now main character gone" They hadn't watched the last one but had saved it 🙈 Also purposely spoilt end of GOT for my stbxh. Never watched an episode but saw ending on gogglebox and told him what happened, that'll learn him 😂

I remember being so surprised by a MN thread where loads of people admitted that they didn't know the dates of WWI and WWII. WWII especially seems so central to British culture, so obsessed over, that I thought 1939-1945 would be etched on most people's brains, no matter their age or education status. Apparently I was wrong!
