That Freddie dying isn't a spoiler FFS

Got this 'friend' who is the first to jump in at every opportunity to say 'oh, you've done that wrong'.

One of her hallmarks is calling you out when you've supposedly let others down.

Her call out today on a WA group is when I've said after watching Bohemian Rhapsody how tragic for poor Freddie Mercury to die at such a young age from aids.

Her response? Spoiler alert! 'Ruined that for me now'. It's a public fact not a work of fiction. What next, letting her know the titanic sinks!

Any suggestions on a response that is better than F off?

Or AIBU

Oh, dear. That is funny.

"Are you sitting down? I have some news about Elvis..."

@MrsGulDukat

When I was 8 months pregnant (And having a proper shit pregnancy) the 7th Harry Potter book came out and I was really looking forward to it.

A friend (no longer, bitch) called to ask how far I'd got with the book which wasnt far by that point.

Her exact words were, "So you dont know that Snape dies."

Fuck me I was fucking fuming.

Even 14 years later I still get the rage over it.

I was 13 years old, sitting in Mrs Dougan's RE Class when Abigail Seymour told me Sirius Black died in Order of the Pheonix. I still feel the injustice that she wasn't smote on the spot for her sins.

@MrMipling

I miss when people used to be ashamed of their ignorance.
I don’t miss when people were scornful of knowledge that others hadn’t yet had a chance to gain. Or when people were snobbish dicks rather than helping other people learn.

@JenerationH

But the thing about classics is that a new generation comes to them afresh each time - I was quite cross when someone gave away what happened to one of the characters in Little Women, I was enjoying the new adaptation and it’s a book I’ve just never read.

To assume that everyone has had access to the classics growing up - that’s the snobbery.

You are barking.

Classics are always being redone

You might not have watched a theatre production or read Romeo & Julliette. But you could have watched it because you had a bit of a crush on Leonardo DiCaprio so watched his adaptation. Which was released 20 years ago

FionnulaTheCooler · 09/05/2021 19:57

I got a telling off on another forum once for "spoiling" the death of a character in the last Harry Potter book. It had been out for 2 years at the time. I would have assumed that if you were particularly bothered about reading the book without hearing anything about the plot you would have managed to find time to read it in 2 years.

Or watched friends either?

It was spoiled on that too.

I agree! I think six months is a generous amount of time to keep quiet. Anything more than that is narcissism on the part of the person who hasn’t read/watched it yet.

EastWestWhosBest · 09/05/2021 20:01

I seriously think that expecting others not to talk about classics due to their own ignorance is a form of narcissism or something similar.

I think that assuming that everyone has had the benefit of your level of education and access and therefore you can spoil any book you like is far more narcissistic.

ScrambledSmegs · 09/05/2021 20:04

A friend guessed the twist in The Sixth Sense a full twenty minutes before the big reveal and excitedly shouted it out in the cinema. On the first weekend it was released too. Now THAT is a spoiler.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/05/2021 20:05

Not knowing that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father ... things that you should be embarrassed about why should anyone be embarrassed about not knowing what happens in a movie? Can you tell me what happens to every character in every movie released to cinema?

Tambora · 09/05/2021 20:05

@chesterelly

I took a spare ticket from a friend and went with her and her parents to see Jesus Christ Superstar. At the end her DF said " well I enjoyed that but I wasn't expecting it to end like that" then couldn't understand why we fell about laughing. We also enjoyed it despite realising that even Andrew Lloyd Webber wouldn't try and re-write the Bible.

That's the only thing I've ever successfully spotted in a film - most of the time I just go on watching the film until the big reveal.

My ex called the twist in The Crying Game as soon as the character appeared onscreen, that was impressive.

HelpfulBelle · 09/05/2021 20:08

The fact that Freddie Mercury died of an AIDS-related illness in November 1991 is not 'specifics', it's COMMON KNOWLEDGE and one of the most well-known facts in the Western world.

Your friend is bats 🦇

Avada kedavra, @NamechangeApril21!

WallpaperLady · 09/05/2021 20:09

Clear your friend is on another planet lol. You should tell her its a documentary and that they all starred in it (including Peter Beale who left Walford to be in Queen). They did it as they were living through the years!

On a more realistic note, it is a great film and Rami Malek was a great Freddie! Rocket Man is quite good too if you liked BR x

I suspect that there are quite a few people (from all backgrounds) who simply aren't interested in ever reading the classics, or if they have, were bored rigid by them.
CharityDingle · 09/05/2021 20:11

I read a book review on a widely read book site which basically was a huge spoiler. The poster gave away the ending completely.
There were a lot of unimpressed responses.

HermioneKipper · 09/05/2021 20:14

This is hilarious! Your responses are gold!

iirc it's both, is it not @EveryDayIsADuvetDay?

The smarmy fucker likes the nubile body & impressionable young mind of his child-lover, but deffo has his boots under the bed in terms of Lower Loxley's revenue.

Do you recall the sickening scene where he allowed Lizard to buy his a posh (3 heat settings!) kettle & insisted on a brand new duvet set - at his bird's mother's expense - rather than hand-downs "because they feel so much nicer".

Fucking pervy parasite.
I would LOVE to see samples of his Great Artworks btw (she opines, continuing to derail this quite splendid thread ...)

I'd want to follow that up with "Well I wouldn't get too invested in Princess Diana in the next series of the Crown then..."
