That Freddie dying isn't a spoiler FFS

Got this 'friend' who is the first to jump in at every opportunity to say 'oh, you've done that wrong'.

One of her hallmarks is calling you out when you've supposedly let others down.

Her call out today on a WA group is when I've said after watching Bohemian Rhapsody how tragic for poor Freddie Mercury to die at such a young age from aids.

Her response? Spoiler alert! 'Ruined that for me now'. It's a public fact not a work of fiction. What next, letting her know the titanic sinks!

Any suggestions on a response that is better than F off?

Or AIBU

Haha! Everyone is keeping quiet because she's made herself look a right twat! They're all think the same as you.. and us!

Just say...
I'm sorry I just assumed as it's based on a true story that everyone knew that Freddy Mercury is dead! It wasn't actually a spoiler was it?! Unless you thought he was still alive but surely not?!!

EastWestWhosBest · 09/05/2021 18:35

@JenerationH

Not knowing that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father or that Freddie Mercury is dead are things that you should be embarrassed about, not things that you should be angry with others for 'spoiling'.

Children are the exception, but as an adult...? Just pure ignorance!

But FM being dead is historical fact. Vader and Luke is part of a story. You shouldn’t just bandy about bits of story like they are nothing.
Footle · 09/05/2021 18:35

Whatever you do, don't tell her Queen Anne's dead

Nandocushion · 09/05/2021 18:36

It's been a few years since I watched it, but...he doesn't actually die in the film though? Doesn't it just end with the Live Aid performance?

My 75yo DM went with a friend of hers to see Bohemian Rhapsody and I was baffled as to why - she has never liked or even been aware of popular music at any age. I asked her afterwards how she liked it and she said "Oh! It was actually about Freddie Mercury and his band Queen! We had no idea, we thought it would be about European music. It was fine, but it was quite loud".

DH and I felt that perhaps theatres should put a note on all the film posters, so as not to lead other elderly people astray. "WARNING: Does not contain actual Bohemians"

pheasantsinlove · 09/05/2021 18:36

Actually scrap that.. put what @AliceMcK said instead! I'd love it if Freddie and Elvis were actually just living the quiet life somewhere in a little bungalow GrinGrin

MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 18:38

Are Freddie and Elvis living together?

ShagMeRiggins · 09/05/2021 18:39

@EastWestWhosBest

I do hate it though when people spoil the ending of books or films and then say ‘but you’ve had 150 years to read it/ 40 years to watch it’.

No I haven’t. Especially if I only found out about the book a week ago.

I understand it’s frustrating, but how are people meant to know when you have found out about it and whether or not you’ve read/seen it?

Libby Purves (again of The Times) received a complaint when she wrote about a BBC television adaptation of Vanity Fair, which discussed events in the story. Which was published in 1848.

I think that’s the OP’s point—it’s unreasonable for people to expect others to never discuss things such as books, films, sporting events, just in case someone in the conversation is unaware.

Surely it’s the responsibility of the individual to remove herself from the conversation, or not read the article about Vanity Fair, or avoid news the day after the Oscars (me, every single fecking year until I can watch my recording if it).

ImprobablePuffin · 09/05/2021 18:40

What? Freddie Mercury dies?
Fucks sake, OP. Thanks for nothing!

iklboo · 09/05/2021 18:40

Are Freddie and Elvis living together?

Yes. Lord Lucan lets them share a stable with Shergar (nods sagely).

Mysa74 · 09/05/2021 18:40

I think with the last grey potter it's more a case of who doesn't... Still haven't forgiven jk for rushing her way through that last book...

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 09/05/2021 18:40

Leaving the cinema, after seeing Titanic, I heard someone behind me say, "That was really good, I'd like to see it again". The man with her replied (without any apparent trace of irony), "Nah, we'd know the ending."

StrapOnSallyChasedMeDownTheAli · 09/05/2021 18:41

You didn't know he was dead? No, no, no, no, no, no, no 😱😳 Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia, let me go, Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for meeeeeeeeeeee

freeez · 09/05/2021 18:42

I really want to know whether she didn't realise Freddie was real, or whether she knew he was real but didn't realise he had died.

Either option blows my mind tbh!

Brokenpencilsarepointless · 09/05/2021 18:43

Maintaining the suspense? She must be joking. There is no way she can think Bohemium Rhapsody is meant to be a surprising ending. Surely Queen and Freddie Mercury are common knowledge.

MrsGulDukat · 09/05/2021 18:44

Yes. Lord Lucan lets them share a stable with Shergar (nods sagely).

How sweet.

I bet Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson, Buddy Holly, John Lennon and George Harrison pop in for a mega jam sess.

ShagMeRiggins · 09/05/2021 18:47

@iklboo

Yes, I mean wtf else could such people think 'Luke, I am your father', intoned in a deep voice refer to?

He actually says 'No, I am your father' (yes, I'm a geek).

I love you for this! Grin
EffYouSeeKaye · 09/05/2021 18:48

Classic. What a dick. Also well done op for an excellent rainy Sunday thread. Genuinely might make some popcorn.

I’m so torn between the Queen 2 idea or just asking her why she thinks he hasn’t had an album out lately...

I’d also definitely be managing her expectations for Diana in The Crown too, as a pp suggested.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2021 18:49

Yes, but it's nearly always misquoted so that's the correct reference for my context.Grin It's like 'play it again, Sam' (spoiler : Sam plays it again)
musingloud · 09/05/2021 18:49

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow

Oh that's different. Titanic wasn't actually a film about the titanic, was it? It was a love story really, with fictional character, that was set on the titanic.
nellyburt · 09/05/2021 18:49

I’m cringing inside out for her. Please
Let us know her reply.

MarxandMarzipan · 09/05/2021 18:51

that line would have been so much better in Dave Prowse's voice.

RandomMess · 09/05/2021 18:53

I keep cackling at this, she is either completely lacking in general knowledge or winding you up!

SeasonFinale · 09/05/2021 18:56

@wellwellwellhereweare

Right. She's replied.

"Not all of us know the endings and it's just good form to keep quiet. I'd rather not know, thank you and a lot of effort has gone in to maintaining the suspense".

No one else is commenting.

I think she thinks it's all fiction!

I would just put lots of laughing faces and say You're so funny. Anyone would think you had never heard of him.
StrapOnSallyChasedMeDownTheAli · 09/05/2021 18:59

Freddie Mercury - one of the world's most famous dead people.

magicstar1 · 09/05/2021 19:00

@MarxandMarzipan

that line would have been so much better in Dave Prowse's voice.
I was at a Star Trek convention once and a side room was showing Star Wars. I was having a look and a man walked in and asked what we were watching. I replied “Star Wars or something...I’m not really sure”. I found out afterwards it was David Prowse and who he was....I felt so bad as I’m sure he thought I was being intentionally rude.
