That Freddie dying isn't a spoiler FFS

Got this 'friend' who is the first to jump in at every opportunity to say 'oh, you've done that wrong'.

One of her hallmarks is calling you out when you've supposedly let others down.

Her call out today on a WA group is when I've said after watching Bohemian Rhapsody how tragic for poor Freddie Mercury to die at such a young age from aids.

Her response? Spoiler alert! 'Ruined that for me now'. It's a public fact not a work of fiction. What next, letting her know the titanic sinks!

Any suggestions on a response that is better than F off?

Or AIBU

But it's different in a general chat to interupting someone mid boom or mid movie , and most of the "it's inappropriate" has come from the SW chat where someone walked in mid movie and said "has DV said he's the Dad yet?" whixh is entirely different

BorderlineHappy · 09/05/2021 21:54

If a film or a book is out years ,and you havent seen it. Dont get annoyed when someone says a spoiler.
Its not their fault you never seen/heard of it.

Coming out of a cinema and saying so and so dies in the end or Darth Vader is the father while people are queuing for said film is completely different.

@ClarkeGriffin

Some of these replies from people who are offended are really just making me want to list spoilers to popular franchises. Grin
Same here! Grin

Little Miss Sunshine isn't about a Roger Hargreaves character

Harry Potter is not about making ceramics

The Godfather is not filmed at a christening

As others have said though, in 40 years you must have been living under a rock though to have missed ALL the memes, ALL the references in other movies/TV Shows, and walked through most food shops blind during fathers day because they all sold the same darth vader t shirt.

@ClarkeGriffin well someone told me in my 20s so I'd be oblivious until then, having paid little heed to SW stuff as my Dad wasn't into it. I was non plussed they told me because I wasn't sitting watching it but it's that specific situation where I think it's off to blab. It doesn't matter of o think everyone should know what happens in Labyrinth , if they were watching it I'd check before I commented

What does your dads opinion have to do with it? Confused My dad doesn't like star wars either, I still knew. Probably knew actually before I even watched the films as I was born after they were made.

EloiseTheFirst · 09/05/2021 22:14

I think I'd be more obvious and call her out on her nonsense and reply something like -

Eh? Sorry I'm confused. You think that there are people who think Freddie Mercury is still alive and you're worried that I'm "spoiling" it for them by telling them he's dead. And that he died THIRTY years ago!

What does your dads opinion have to do with it? confused sorry meant I paid no attention to the Star Wars stuff at Father's Day as that's been referenced several times. Not sure how much memes were a thing in the Naughties. But it was general conversation so it doesn't matter that someone told me. It doesn't change the fact that I wouldn't interupt someone watching a movie to make guesses of what had happened so far

Well there is quite a memorable christening scene in the first Godfather film.

Eons ago when I was at high school my girlfriends & I went to see Romeo & Juliet at the cinema - (guess where this is going?) we were waiting in the queue & this female voice comes from behind "What happens in the end of the film?" Everybody looks around behind them to see who said this....
She did sound a bit dim
So you could give her spoilers on the ending of Romeo & Juliet, ....

Esse321 · 09/05/2021 22:29

Why was there no trigger warning on this thread??????????????????????

Yesmate · 09/05/2021 22:29

Specifics. Jesus she’s bat shit! It couldn’t have been more publicised and is still heavily talked about! She sounds a pain in the area to be honest and I can’t believe no one else on the group chat told her to stop being so stupid.

Itwasjustresting · 09/05/2021 22:30

@JenerationH

But the thing about classics is that a new generation comes to them afresh each time - I was quite cross when someone gave away what happened to one of the characters in Little Women, I was enjoying the new adaptation and it’s a book I’ve just never read.

To assume that everyone has had access to the classics growing up - that’s the snobbery.

You are barking.

And you’re fucking rude. HTH.
ElfDragon · 09/05/2021 22:33

When I was at university (a fair while ago now!) I had friends who had no clue re: Star Wars/Darth Vader/Luke. Some were just not interested, others just didn’t know. There were regular screenings of the trilogy (as was!) in various colleges, and one time a friend was excited to go and watch - never seen, was talking about how good it would be to watch all 3 together, looking forward to it, etc, when some twat pulled the same Darth Vader reveal, and tried to cover it with the same ‘but the films are 20 years old!’ disingenuous crap. It was spiteful to do, given the context, and would have been easy enough to avoid doing.

(As it happens, one of those uni friends who had no clue only knows now because her dc are so into Star Wars that she has had to watch and learn, so she managed to get to the age of 40 without knowing)

My dd didn’t know anything about Star Wars until she watched the films age 15. Hadn’t been the slightest bit interested until then, despite me being a big fan. She understood not to spoil the films for her younger sibling, and refused to talk about it with him until he made her tell him the plot (he prefers to know what is coming up).

FortniteBoysMum · 09/05/2021 22:33

Tell her your sorry you thought it was old news......because it literally is.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2021 22:36

We went to see West Side Story a couple of years ago. DH (somehow) didn't know what it was about so I told him it was basically Romeo and Juliet.
He enjoyed the show but seemed surprised it hadn't had a happy ending.Confused

Anniegetyourgun · 09/05/2021 22:40

I'm appalled - appalled, I say! - that despite this thread being frequented by self-proclaimed nerds, the reference to "Dave Prowse's voice" was not challenged. (I'm wondering whether Darth Vader qualifies for some sort of record for the number of different actors playing him, or contributing to playing him. Any advance on 5? Not counting body doubles etc, that's cheating.)

I do agree that walking in and saying "Have you got to the bit where..." is a dick move. If you're that familiar with the movie you should be able to spot with one eye whereabouts the viewer had got to - it's right near the end too. There is no way anyone saying that is genuinely asking out of interest. Bastards.
