That Freddie dying isn't a spoiler FFS

Got this 'friend' who is the first to jump in at every opportunity to say 'oh, you've done that wrong'.

One of her hallmarks is calling you out when you've supposedly let others down.

Her call out today on a WA group is when I've said after watching Bohemian Rhapsody how tragic for poor Freddie Mercury to die at such a young age from aids.

Her response? Spoiler alert! 'Ruined that for me now'. It's a public fact not a work of fiction. What next, letting her know the titanic sinks!

Any suggestions on a response that is better than F off?

Or AIBU

@Serpenta

Gee, I dunno they may say 'can you believe I've never seen Star Wars before?'.
And if they don’t? You’re ok?
Bracknellite · 09/05/2021 21:06

Saw the headline and though you meant Freddie Kruger.

Spoiler- He dies in every film, but is back for the next.

Serpenta · 09/05/2021 21:09

LittleBearPad, obviously it's up to the person to speak up if they're watching something for the first time and are keen for their co-viewers not to give the story away. It's no skin off my nose to oblige if it's the case. That's all!

You seem peeved at the very idea.

ForgedInFire · 09/05/2021 21:09

Oh this happened to me before. Me and DP were watching the NWA movie and he made an off hand comment half way through about Eazy-E's death and I had no idea it was coming. He thought it was common knowledge but he's a few years older then me and I just didn't know

MiddleClassProblem · 09/05/2021 21:13

Freddie’s death was pretty big news due to the current affairs aspect of AIDS and him being one of the world’s biggest music icons. There aren’t many famous person deaths that were so entwined with a very specific time period in the same way other.

Tell her Elton John survives in Rocketman.

PMSL

thanks OP!

LittleBearPad · 09/05/2021 21:19

Not really. I just find the crossness up the thread about old films and books being spoiled idiotic.

Serpenta · 09/05/2021 21:22

@JenerationH

It's not about having seen it. I've never seen it.

I cannot fathom anyone other than a child not knowing such a widely known cultural story. It's like being upset if someone walked in when they were watching Romeo and Juliet and asked if they'd got to the poison taking bit yet.
Or if Aladdin has met the genie yet.
Or if Frankenstein's monster had come to life yet.

I'm sure there are loads of people who don't know how Romeo and Juliet actually die, or who think the genie is called Aladdin. And so many people think the monster is the one called Frankenstein.

So I wouldn't be massively surprised if more people than you think were sketchy on the detail of these things. I can fathom it.

LookItsMeAgain · 09/05/2021 21:24

Tell her that "Rocketman" doesn't actually contain any rockets, that "The Constant Gardener" isn't like Gardener's World on speed, "Reservoir Dogs" doesn't feature reservoirs or a variety of breeds of dogs either, and "A Clockwork Orange" doesn't feature any Terrys Chocolate oranges!

Any other suggestions on misinterpreted movies or plot lines in movies that can be 'spoiled' for her???

EastWestWhosBest · 09/05/2021 21:27

Well right now I’m watching Pursuit of Love. Although I’ve heard of Nancy Mitford I don’t know the book.
I guess spoilers are fair game though because I should have read a book I’ve never heard of.

BorderlineHappy · 09/05/2021 21:27

What,so you never mention a film or book ending ever again in case the other person has never seen a film or book older than 2 months old.

Do you think you might be taking this thread a bit too personally?

Well it’s a pretty famous novel that has been adapted for TV before so people may reasonably assume you’ve read it/heard of it

Well I think walking in halfway through a movie and asking of the most significant part has happened yet when you don't know of they've seen it before spiteful. So there you go. Spiteful Vs Idiotic
MiddleClassProblem · 09/05/2021 21:33

I don’t think it’s comparable with fiction. It was something that made global news.

elfycat · 09/05/2021 21:34

Has anyone suggested the ONLY correct reply now.

Are you on glue?

SleepingStandingUp · 09/05/2021 21:34

@BorderlineHappy

What,so you never mention a film or book ending ever again in case the other person has never seen a film or book older than 2 months old.
Conversation in the pub, round the watercooler, general chit chat, fine Deliberately interupting someone watching something to give away a plot line, spiteful.
MiddleClassProblem · 09/05/2021 21:35

Also he can’t come back in a plot twist like in fiction

EastWestWhosBest · 09/05/2021 21:35

@BorderlineHappy

What,so you never mention a film or book ending ever again in case the other person has never seen a film or book older than 2 months old.
Yes. Or I will ask if I want to talk about it. Assuming that everyone has seen or read the same things as you is very arrogant.
EastWestWhosBest · 09/05/2021 21:37

Well sadly I had a shit secondary modern education in the 80s and I hadn’t.
And no I’m not taking this personally but using it as an example.

BorderlineHappy · 09/05/2021 21:38

@SleepingStandingU
@SleepingStandingUpIts not be being ignorant to assume you would know the basics of a biography of a film you are watching.

Not sure why you've tagged me. I didn't say it was

Eskarina1 · 09/05/2021 21:45

@NamechangeApril21 weirdly that's almost exactly how I found out that Freddy Mecury died, although I can't remember the name of my RE teacher and it was Jenny Williams who told me.

ClarkeGriffin · 09/05/2021 21:46

Some of these replies from people who are offended are really just making me want to list spoilers to popular franchises. Grin
