That Freddie dying isn't a spoiler FFS

Got this 'friend' who is the first to jump in at every opportunity to say 'oh, you've done that wrong'.

One of her hallmarks is calling you out when you've supposedly let others down.

Her call out today on a WA group is when I've said after watching Bohemian Rhapsody how tragic for poor Freddie Mercury to die at such a young age from aids.

Her response? Spoiler alert! 'Ruined that for me now'. It's a public fact not a work of fiction. What next, letting her know the titanic sinks!

Any suggestions on a response that is better than F off?

Or AIBU

I do loath inverse snobbery, if I were to say you should be embarrassed for not knowing the intricacies of a Chekhov book or one of the rarer Shakespeare plays you would probably call me a snob! I've never seen Star Wars, my knowledge comes from buying presents for my grandson or standing in the queue for the ride in Florida! I actually WA'd my daughter to ask who the gold figurine was called. It's all about not liking sci-fi, I wouldn't go to seen Chariots of Fire when it first came out.

In which case I'm guessing you probably wouldn't be the knobby person complaining about spoilers from a 3 year old film about a 30 year old story.....

My ex called the twist in The Crying Game as soon as the character appeared onscreen, that was impressive.

That is impressive! I remember at the time there was a big fuss because Jaye Davidson was nominated for a Best Actor award when the film hadn't been out that long.

It's a wonderful film. I watched it with my DS last year - he's 22. There is so much more awareness these days of trans sexuality and gender fluidity but it still passed him by. He did make the occasional remark, he mentioned at one point that the character Dil had very broad shoulders and things like that, but he was completely taken by surprise at the bid reveal!

Chachachachachachachachanges · 09/05/2021 20:21

This is the best ever description of Star Wars (warning spoilers) Grin

EastWestWhosBest · 09/05/2021 20:22

@JenerationH

Libraries exist, people!

No, I don't assume that everyone had read every classic. I certainly haven't.

But expecting no one else to talk about books/films that have been out for years because you haven't yet read/seen them?

Entitled as feck!

It is possible to talk about a book or film without giving the whole plot away.
Fespital · 09/05/2021 20:27

@ThePawtriarchy

Yes, you’ve got it already: ‘you’ll never guess what happens in Titanic then!’

@wellwellwellhereweare

I said "just checking you do know FM was a real person"?

She's replied "Of course I do, I just didn't know specifics".

Still no comments from anyone else. I suspect they are giggling and/or eating popcorn 🍿

I'm assuming the 'specifics' include that he's dead!

Lol'd at your specifics comment!
LifeinPieces21 · 09/05/2021 20:30

I'm embarrassed for her.

That's an interesting point (without tangent-ing the thread) in that I watched it not long after it came out but despite being a similar age to me she didn't watch it until 2015ish.
swiggles · 09/05/2021 20:36

Well she's a tool! I think I missed why you are in this WA group in the first place OP?

SleepingStandingUp · 09/05/2021 20:36

No, but knowing nothing about this particular one is a symptom of having lived under a rock. not everyone watches the same movies or reads the same articles. The memes about I am your father are meaningless if you have no idea who he's talking to. It's entirely different to actual fact of someone being dead 30 yrs. And I don't think you shouldn't make comments about who the Dad is in this context, but I think if you walk in and someone is watching a movie, you check if they've seen it previously before asking about a major plot point. It doesn't affect you to say oh where are you at rather than oh has Darth said he's the Daddy / has Sirius died / has Jo died etc

She has to be joking.... right? 🤞 everyone knows Freddie Mercury died at a young age. Even I do and I'm not 30 yet

SleepingStandingUp · 09/05/2021 20:43

@JenerationH

No it isn't. There'll be plenty of other rock dweller that don't know about Freddie mercury being dead.

Yes but it's more acceptable to think people watching a movie about a person would be aware that person died at some point on the past than to assume someone currently watching a movie knows what happens in it

Grin at dippy friend and Grin at the people grumpy about stories that are decades old being spoiled.

Damnloginpopup · 09/05/2021 20:48

I just hope they catch the shark that ate the skinny dipper before it kills anybody else.

Says who?!

I think someone's as big of an ignorant fanny for being upset that Star Wars has been spoiled as the OPs friend is about Freddie Mercury being dead.

Why is the pp's friend a fanny for not expecting someone to walk in mid movie and start discussing what happens at the end (is it the end?? Middle? Further on? Never seen them and was Def in my 20s before someone told me DV was the Dad. Not a spoiler as I don't care and wasn't mid movie!). I appreciate you might have been meaning to call me a fanny but I'm not upset by knowing who the Dad is

It just doesn't take a lot of effort to think oh this might be the first time they've seen this, I won't mention what happens in it.

Who Is Keyser Söze?

Now, 1995 was a fucker of a year for spoilers!

If someone is watching Star Wars (or any film) for the first time it is a dick move to announce a spoiler just because you think they're a bit of a twit to not already be familiar with that particular bit of pop culture. Just let them enjoy it!

How on earth are you meant to know someone is watching a film for the first time when the film is 40 years old
Serpenta · 09/05/2021 21:02

Gee, I dunno they may say 'can you believe I've never seen Star Wars before?'.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/05/2021 21:05

Ah Star Wars, I love this one. Have you seen it before?
Ooh old Star Wars. Never really liked them. You seen it before?
Ooh where are we up to?

Got a reply yet Op?

Whoever suggested letting her know not to get too invested in Princess Diana in The Crown - genius! Grin
