Just going through those early great albums, The Slim Shady, The Marshall Mathers LP, the Eminem show...and thinking what a genius. I’ve also had some glasses of wine so am rambling. But those brilliant lyrics. Sigh....anyone agree?

Literally just sitting thinking about this, and the only thing I can say in respect of Eminem to be nice is that, well, at least he wasn't Vanilla Ice.

HTH

Norabatty40 · 09/05/2021 09:29

Is this a joke thread.. eminem? Listen to some real rappers.. gift of the gab on alphabet aerobics

Pinkywoo · 09/05/2021 09:58

YABU, Will Smith is the best, boom shake the room!

Fuckitfuckit · 09/05/2021 10:00

I agree. I loved him when I was younger. (I'm not old now really but I loved him from when I was about 9!)
I'm shocked that I was allowed to listen to his music at that age to be fair now I'm an adult but even now, I say to DH, listen to how clever a lot of his lyrics are..

LynnInAVan · 09/05/2021 10:01

Method man, or Nas

Jarstastic · 09/05/2021 10:01

I quite like Eminem.

I like Dave. He has such a range and his lyrics are thoughtful.

Check out on YouTube his early blackbox. He was just 16!

Jarstastic · 09/05/2021 10:02

Agreed on Lauryn Hill.

SaturdayRocks · 09/05/2021 10:06

For those who think op doesn't know about any other rappers, consider Eminem is the highest selling rap artist of all time by around 100 million

How does Eminem being the highest selling rap artist prove the OP has any awareness of other rappers? Confused

SaturdayRocks · 09/05/2021 10:09

And BTW, being commercially successful doesn’t mean you’re the best. It means you have the biggest commercial appeal.

EmeraldShamrock · 09/05/2021 10:11

I think his determination to make it makes him more popular.
I'd say he was a genius as a music artist but not the greatest rapper.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 09/05/2021 10:41

I love Eminem and most of his songs. I often have a binge listen and I think he's great.

But GOAT? No. So many more that have been mentioned(including the female artists that don't seem to be mentioned much) are miles ahead- lyrics, beat, style etc.

Cocolapew · 09/05/2021 10:42

Wham Rap 🤘 classic.

ElderMillennial · 09/05/2021 10:42

I agree. He's great.

Cocolapew · 09/05/2021 10:44

GOAT, with an honourable mention to Kevin The Gerbil.

Washimal · 09/05/2021 10:45

quality doesn't half drop off when the money has poured in

This is very true. Probably applies to most genres of music actually but the drop in quality is particularly striking with hip hop.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/05/2021 10:54

I'm not sure I agree, some of these new wrappers either tear completely down the side and everything falls out, or you just can't get the blasted things open, even with your teeth or bread knife.

@thecognoscenti

Is this a joke? That revolting misogynist? But because he's white, apparently he's a genius? FFS.
No one is saying it’s because he’s white? Also, misogyny is rife in the hip hop world, he’s certainly not alone in that.
HelpfulBelle · 09/05/2021 12:17

Rakim is the greatest.

That is all.

HelpfulBelle · 09/05/2021 12:23

I'm also reading The Beastie Boys Book at the moment and the range of influences is INSANE. RIP MCA.

I love all the backpacker stuff like Jurassic 5, TCQ/Q-Tip, Ugly Duckling, The Roots, Common and I guess De La/Public Enemy.

I don't really like the mainstream stuff Grinsuch a music snob. Apart from Wham Rap, obviously.

TheGumption · 09/05/2021 12:36

I'm embarrassed for this thread.

EmeraldShamrock · 09/05/2021 12:43

I personally thought "Love the way you lie" highlighted how abusive relationships use the same excuses same promises' that are clearly a lie and he will do it again.

DrSbaitso · 09/05/2021 12:46

@EmeraldShamrock

I personally thought "Love the way you lie" highlighted how abusive relationships use the same excuses same promises' that are clearly a lie and he will do it again.
Was it intended that way?
CovoidOfAllHumanity · 09/05/2021 12:47

I love Lauryn Hill and I think her Miseducation album is a necessary counterpoint to the misogyny of a lot of rap music and I love it for that.

That said I have a huge soft spot for NWA and I vote Ice Cube for GOAT even though a lot of the lyrics are objectionable I think you can't fault his talent and what he had to say about his world.

Definately · 09/05/2021 12:48

It's not my kind of thing at all. All a bit angsty for me.
