Aibu to think Andy Burnham would be a brilliant choice for Labour leader? Competent, passionate, unifying, relatable

(and also rather attractive 🤭😜)
@LindainLockdown he’s just bloody sacked Angela Rayner too as party chair- such a disappointment
Why? What was her track record? Other than a teenage pregnancy, supporting disastrous Corbyn and snarling at opponents during a debate.

@the80sweregreat

Y C is a remainer. Labour need a leaver. Someone who ' tells it like it is ' and can have a pie and a pint up the pub. It's what people react to. I'm sure they know all this deep down. It's a tricky one !!
It's not as if Johnson is a Leaver from conviction.
Tealightsandd · 08/05/2021 20:43

@gingercat02

I said exactly this earlier. I think he is left enough to appeal to the trad Labour vote but modern enough to move the party on
Not the trad Labour vote in the south. If by 'trad' you mean working class or poor or deprived. For a start, he seems to think they don't exist.

I don't think he's heard of the midlands either.

Add in that he seems to think "The North" consists mainly of Greater Manchester... Oh - how he loves doing a stereotyped Northerner caricature though.

Patronising, fake, and focused on stoking division. Not the best choice, really.

the80sweregreat · 08/05/2021 20:43

I know! Boris Johnson took a chance and it worked. Some might call it genius.
Having a Labour remainer won't win over hearts snd minds now though .

Foobydoo · 08/05/2021 20:44

I am from Greater Manchester. He wasn't that popular as MP for Leigh and got a reputation as a bit of a yes man who would say what he thought would make him popular rather than what mattered.
It was very annoying that Greater Manchester voted against having a mayor yet we got one anyway.
That said he redeemed his self during the pandemic and I do think he would be a much better leader than Starmer who is so out of touch and clueless.

ilovesooty · 08/05/2021 20:44

YC's "dickhead husband" lost his seat to an appalling MP. He doesn't seem to have "pulled her down" much since he left politics.

weareallpassengers · 08/05/2021 20:45

AB should have been elected leader when he tried before.,sadly labour seem unable to pick an even half decent leader....i think he would be great

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 08/05/2021 20:45

I think we'd be in a very different place if Burnham had been appointed instead of Corbyn. Still can't believe Corbyn beat him to the Labour leadership. Labour will pay that price for a long time to come

Feelingconfused2020 · 08/05/2021 20:47

They need a northerner or at least a non londoner. To be honest a female northerner would be best but I think Burnham would win far more votes than starmer.

I agree.
Rollercoaster21 · 08/05/2021 20:48

@RockingMyFiftiesNot quite! I think Burnham would be able to appeal to a wider range of people and he seems to have a personality which Starmer doesn’t. Starmer just seems terrified

There is not going to be a Labour Prime Minister for a very very long time. Andy Burnham can do good work in Greater Manchester and should remain there.

Keir isn't a Londoner.

And, actually what they need is decent policies. Far more important than where someone is from (although, it would obviously be good if after 30-40 years, someone stood up for London's millions of poor and deprived).

itsgettingwierd · 08/05/2021 20:52

@BlackBucketOfCheese

There are plenty of inspiring women in the Labour Party

Labour don’t event know what a woman is.

Best response of the day!
itsgettingwierd · 08/05/2021 20:54

Yvette Cooper
David Lammy
Ed Milliband
Johnathan Ashworth

These people I could consider as leaders if they stood.

I also still think Keir Stamer will come through as he's not afraid to challenge Boris and is very clever Barrister so will have a long game in mind which he will likely win.

DeathStare · 08/05/2021 20:54

Nope. I'm from Manchester and we're keeping him.

Xansaf · 08/05/2021 20:55

Burnham was remain as well. I think leave/remain is pretty irrelevant now, it’s done with.

There are plenty of inspiring women in the Labour Party Like who?
Diane Abbott
BonnieDundee · 08/05/2021 21:39

He has interesting associates thus he will be an eventual disaster.

More interesting than our present PM? If you can make racist comments, have someone beaten up and leave your wife for the OW when the wife is being treated for cancer, I'm not really sure anything is off limits

BonnieDundee · 08/05/2021 21:41

Or do leaders of the Labour Party need to keep higher standards than leaders of the Conservative Party?

Arrowheart · 08/05/2021 21:43

He is the best choice by a mile. He is passionate about what is right and also absolutely unbelievably lovely.

StillRailing · 08/05/2021 21:43

It would be nice if they did tbh. No need for a race to the bottom.

So just superficial, then. There are millions who are passionate about football, doesn’t mean they will be any good in the premier league. Words like passionate, lovely are just that - words. To get shot done, you need more than just passion, like tons of competence. But that’s Labour problem - competence is underrated, being a teenage mum or a token working class candidate with 0 talent is placed above competence.
the80sweregreat · 08/05/2021 22:01

They rejected him three times already I believe.
I doubt anyone would go back for more humiliation but then I'm very thin skinned personally.

rabbitheadlights · 08/05/2021 22:13

@sycamoreGap

No thanks - not a great leader and has made questionable decisions in the past. The fact that he won the Greater Manchester Mayoral election (that’s Greater Manchester not Manchester) comes as no real surprise given the voting population of Greater Manchester

What does that mean?
