Unexpectedly amazing food

I recently bought some Chicago Town Loaded Tomato pizzas as they were on offer in the local shop, I'm not normally that keen on frozen pizza so I cooked it for the kids and just saved myself a sliver.... Omg it was amazing. I had to go out and buy 3 more. When I was buying it the checkout lady said. "have you tried these, it's the best pizza ever?".

I gave my neighbours a slice each and unprompted they said it was the best pizza they have ever had!!

What unexpectedly amazing food have you tried recently... I need new good food in my life!!

Richmond sausages full stop. They are just like paste with the occasional lump of gristle.

@Titsywoo

Well OP I have just bought one of the pizzas - shame you don't work for them really!

I love a good pizza (proper neapolitan base in a wood fired oven) and we make our own at home in our Ooni Koda oven. But I still love a pizza hut or Sainsburys basics tomato and cheese pizzas - the small ones are about 50p and you have to add extra cheese as they put bugger all on but they are so shit they are good!). I hate crispy base pizzas and the Chicago Town one looks softer than something like Dr Oetker so I am optimistic!

Oh, you must report back!! 😂

I actually haven't tried the microwave ones and don't like the normal ones but the tomato loaded cheese one is just amazing

I like the Richmond vegan sausages but they are a little bit salty. I usually get the Linda McCartney ones - I’ve been eating them regularly since I was 18 (although they did change the recipe a couple of years ago) and I’ve still never bored of them or found an alternative to steal their spot as number 1 sausage 😋

I agree about sabra hummus, lovely stuff — I also have a thing for Aldi tiramisu

@BrownEyedGirl80 omg piccalilli is one of my favourite things.

I remember as a kid my nana used to take me to the shops and we would get fresh baked oven bottom muffins, good ham from the deli counter and have ham and piccalilli sandwiches for lunch. Best treat ever.

@Bertiebiscuit

MCcain straight cut quick chips - for the microwave - I have been sniffy about frozen chips my whole life but these are excellent - in a very good smallish portion for one - such a treat

Micro chips? As in used to come in the black box? Smallish?? You can barely make a chip butty with all 6 of them that you get 😂

I miss those cheapo pizzas that came in a plastic bag. Used to love one of those with supernoodles and bread & butter to dip and make noodle sandwiches.

M&S rollitos, especially the serrano ham and manchego cheese ones.
Aldi rosemary crackers - delicious even on their own.
Aldi fake snickers, racer bars.

Ooh another one:

DH brought home some Higgidy vegan quiches yesterday. We had the Roasted Tomato and Spinach one earlier. Really nice I must say and I hate cooked spinach normally. It has an oat and coconut milk filling instead of egg, and a spelt flour crust. Bloody expensive but they were on offer.

Slightly superior to the Asda one I’d say.

I was pleasantly surprised by that pizza too, its not a patch on the pizza in our local Italian restaurant but compared to most frozen pizzas its one of the better ones!
Another frozen one that surprised me was the garlic chicken one from Iceland.
I think the most unexpectedly nice food I've tried recently has to be the Linda McCartney mozerella burgers, you'd never know they were meat free

Aldi do a wild boar, chestnut and cranberry pate which is one of the nicest things ever but I only really see it stocked at Christmas.

I had forgotten all about these pizzas but yes, you’re right OP!

I think we used to get a pepperoni version. We discovered them by accident as our village shop stocked them and we ended up buying one when it was all they had left. I seem to recall they were pricey so once we were hooked we used to get them from the supermarket instead as they were sometimes on offer.

Definitely going to get one again soon now you’ve reminded me about them, thanks!

Naked Glory Vegan Sausages. I thought they'd be a bit like that Sossmix my vegan ex used to buy years and years ago (which was nice enough but nothing to get that excited about, IMHO). They're not.

So, so savoury.

Morrison's Pea and Mint fresh soup. Lidl low GI bread (really tasty) and their frozen fish pasta sauce with either mussels or clams (they only do this now and again).

@Ironytheoppositeofwrinkly do this, add in chicken stock and a glug of white wine, lots of black pepper, splash of cream, and some some chopped up cooked new potatoes, chives and crispy fried bacon (flaked haddock optional). BEST CHOWDER EVER.

We had friends over last week. Because we had to eat outside I wanted something simple to serve. We ended up having a green salad, roast potatoes and rare roast beef served with béarnaise sauce. It was meat and 2 veg essentially. The simplest thing ever with no last minute prep but SO delicious. So delicious in fact that although I had deliberately over catered so we could have leftovers the next day, there was nothing left but the pattern on the plates.

I second the Lidl frozen panko crumb calamari, great cooked for 10 mins in the air fryer! 😋
