It's mine and DH's 10th anniversary in November and we're looking at going to Las Vegas for 3/4 days at the end of October. We had the big white church wedding I wanted but DH wants us to renew our vows with Elvis Grin

I'm not a massive gambler but don't might a flutter. I would rather go to Boston but DH thinks I will bore him with history I would

Convince me that LV is great please!?

rookiemere · 06/05/2021 09:07

Sorry but personally I wouldn't fly that far just to go to LV for 3/4 nights. I've been there twice by chance and it's fine as far as it goes but unless you like gambling there's not much else to do other than a flight to see the Grand Canyon

If it was me I'd go to Vancouver instead as lovely city with nice scenery and people. Boston is ok but felt a bit underwhelming for a long weekend with international flights.

DevonBumpkin · 06/05/2021 09:10

I like Vegas, it’s not my favourite place as I don’t like gambling but there are plenty of shows and sights to see.

Can we really go to the states this year??

LongLiveGoblingKing · 06/05/2021 09:11

Vegas is... Weird. I went there for three days as part of a longer trip around USA. I'm not really a gambler but I did have fun seeing the sights. It is the kind of place you have to see to believe and I'm glad I saw it but I wouldn't go all that way just for Vegas.

ZaraW · 06/05/2021 09:12

Sorry it's awful. Boston sounds way more fun.

WindyScales · 06/05/2021 09:13

I loved Vagas and I don’t gamble at all. We saw cirque du soleil, there’s loads of shows, really good food, evening entertainment and the Grand Canyon. Loads to do for 3/4 days. It’s hot so you can get a hotel with a pool. I thought it was really fun, I went with friends though, I guess maybe it’s a bit different with a partner but still a great time.

Hilda40 · 06/05/2021 09:14

It's shit

MrsDrSpencerReid · 06/05/2021 09:14

We bloody loved Vegas! We only did 2 nights as part of a road trip (in between our stay in the Grand Canyon national park and Disneyland) and had the kids with us but it was so much fun!

We didn’t do any gambling, just wandered up and down the strip and looked in all the different casinos & shops etc.

We wanted to renew our vows there on our 10th anniversary/ DH’s 40th but I got sick so we couldn’t plan anything then covid happened (we’re in Aus) but we definitely plan on doing it one day!

ToryStelling · 06/05/2021 09:16

I literally posted this exact thread the other day Grin loads of people said they loved it, but I do imagine it’s a bit of a “Marmite” place.

We’ve never been but we have a milestone birthday to celebrate in October. We love the US though, we’ve been to NY, Chicago, D.C, California and Florida but not Vegas so we really want to go!

Whammyyammy · 06/05/2021 09:18

Vegas is good, been a few times. But we stay in LV for a few days and then head off to San Diego, grand canyon etc. 3/4 days is too short.

Feedex · 06/05/2021 09:18

Did he watch The Hangover or is he a Fanilow??? Boys love the idea of Vegas.
Vegas is awful, sorry! It's over the top, seedy, expensive and really tacky. If you were out there and went for the day to look at the lights and craziness that's one thing but no way I would trek out there for that amount of time just to see Vegas. The jetlag is a killer, you'll spend the first 24hrs barely functioning.
Boston on the other hand is a great city, and still lots of non- history stuff to do. Plus East coast versus West travel time means you'll get more out of your time, and less jet lag.
I've been to both coasts 20 odd times, and for such a short trip I wouldn't travel further than I had to.

Feedex · 06/05/2021 09:19

If you have top go that far I'd go to San Diego instead - BEAUTIFUL. And fun.

moimichme · 06/05/2021 09:20

I was there 20 years ago and thought it was really tacky in a unique American way. But pre-covid there were a lot of cool shows and music there that didn't really exist elsewhere. Grand Canyon also spectacular. Depends on what you like doing on holiday, really! But would echo PP that it's very far to travel for just a couple of days.

MindGrapes · 06/05/2021 09:20

I had sort of romantic nostalgic visions of olde Americana when I went there. After a day i had to admit it's a bit shit. Everyone's out to scam / short-change you. If you walk down the strip there are blokes every few feet handing out "girls in your room tonight" flyers. Big shopping centre vibe.

That said the casinos are fun to wander around with a frozen margarita and spend a few dollars.

Grand Canyon is great, try driving a bit further up to the actual national park - you can stay at Flagstaff iirc.

TheHomeEdit · 06/05/2021 09:22

Vegas is fun. We went as guests for a wedding and I must say I wasn’t expecting to like it but had a great time. Didn’t do any gambling as had kids with us, but as well as the shows and lights and just general oddness to look at there are some museums- we did Area 51 and some sort of gangster museum. There is also the container park with the mantis, the indoor fun fair and the giant wheel. End of October would be good temperatures I think as well. But it’s a long way for just a few days.

Bells3032 · 06/05/2021 09:25

My Dh and i went for our honeymoon just before Covid. I wasn't so keen on the idea - more of a history girl than a gambler and i am completely teetotal.

We had the most phenomenal time - we took craps lessons and ended up winning about $400 over 5 days (we budgeted a small amount each day to gamble), we took a helicopter to the grand canyon, we went to zak bragan ghost house, went to amazing shows including acrobats, ventriloquists and magicians (and don't miss absinthe if you have a dirty sense of humour) and ate amazing (if slightly too big a portion food).

the hotels are phenomenal and rooms so beautiful for what you pay. my DH won't stop raving at every opporunity

PS we are both such history buffs we got engaged at the tower of london!

UrAWizHarry · 06/05/2021 09:26

Imagine blackpool, but much, much worse.

lulugee · 06/05/2021 09:31

It seriously is - amazing! You'll have the best time. DH was reluctant to go but he came back raving about it. I've been three times and can't wait to go back

Catflapkitkat · 06/05/2021 09:36

I got married in Vegas. We went with three friends and had a blast. I agree with the above poster - it is Marmite place Its big, brash and gaudy but such fun if you buy into what it is.

Pomped · 06/05/2021 09:38

Can you stretch to 5 nights? As others have said, the 8 hour (I think?) time difference is a toughie so you might not make the most of day 1/2 although Vegas is a pretty good place to be with jet lag tbh as it’s 24/7.

I’ve been twice and loved it. There are definitely tacky elements but there are also lots of lovely 5* hotels where you can stay relatively cheaply - we had a suite at the Bellagio! With hot tub etc so lovely place to hang out with a bottle of fizz and feel indulgent!

Shopping is good and there are a great variety of shows to see in the evenings. We didnt set out to do much gambling but found the slots quite addictive in the end as we were walking in and out of the hotels.

In November you take your chances with the weather but when we went it was sunny and warm(ish) in March so we were able to hang out by a massive pool that most people avoided as it was only around 19c (warm enough for us Brits!)

Excursion wise you can visit the Grand Canyon and/or the hoover dam but equally you could spend the whole time on the strip and not get bored.

Numnumcookie · 06/05/2021 09:38

We did a 2 night stop over in Vegas and it's nuts. I'm really glad we did it, but also glad we didn't book longer. I'm not a gambler at all so we played a bit on the machines, went in the Linq high roller, watched the Bellagio fountains, took a flight over the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon, cruised down the river and watched a show all of which we really enjoyed. Have no idea what we would have done had we stayed any more nights though. We stayed in the Venetian and did the gondolas as well.

bettytaghetti · 06/05/2021 09:39

Not a gambler here either but have also been suggesting to DH about renewing vows with Elvis; love the idea!

We did go to Vegas and took our kids a few years ago. It was primarily about taking them to see the Grand Canyon etc and there are very few decent hotels close to the canyon itself (or certainly weren't when we went). You can get a fabulous hotel suite for very reasonable rates and we then splashed out on an amazing helicopter trip out to the canyon for a really memorable experience. We also hired a car and took them out to see the Hoover Dam etc and took them to a Cirque du Soleil show.

As to Vegas itself, the good bits were some really great restaurants such as Joel Robuchon, the fountain shows at the BeIlagio, the shopping. However, I found the casinos fairly depressing; that sense of not knowing what time of day it is plus definitely not exactly populated by the glamorous people you see in the movies 😂. Also they pump through this horrible air freshener everywhere that just stank 🤢

If you were to go, go with the expectation of it being a bit tacky and you won't be disappointed!

Ps. Boston is fabulous!

DarceyDashwood · 06/05/2021 09:43

I went for 4 nights with a friend when they turned 40 and had such a good time!! We don’t really gamble but had a few goes on the roulette wheel - more just for the experience. It was amazing chilling out by the pool people watching, the hotels are all incredible to wander around. Lots of nice food and a day trip out to the Grand Canyon. Absolutely loved it! I’m not a “partying” sort of person so we didn’t have any massive nights out but did see a show and went for drinks up the stratosphere one night. Honestly had the best time!

murbblurb · 06/05/2021 09:46

Been once as part of a road trip. Arrived mid afternoon , saw the lights, pigged out at a buffet. Left next morning with a feeling of ' worth seeing but that's enough'. Very sleazy too even though actual prostitution isn't legal there.

The helicopters are kept away from the most stunning bits of the grand canyon so you ll see a lot more if you drive there. Stay in Flagstaff to visit.

alanrickmanspetcat · 06/05/2021 09:47

We go every year

The best place ever Grin

PS - husband a hardcore Christian

PPS - me, not so much Wink

murbblurb · 06/05/2021 09:48

If you are a gambler, a shopper or like theme parks it would be great though.
