It's mine and DH's 10th anniversary in November and we're looking at going to Las Vegas for 3/4 days at the end of October. We had the big white church wedding I wanted but DH wants us to renew our vows with Elvis Grin

I'm not a massive gambler but don't might a flutter. I would rather go to Boston but DH thinks I will bore him with history I would

Convince me that LV is great please!?

I would defo go back with dc, what I like about & American destinations in general it is that it's very easy if that makes sense, everything is on your doorstep, lots of space, lots of options etc.

20viona · 06/05/2021 14:13

Vegas is THE greatest place on Earth. We have been 7 times. We always stay somewhere different. Wandering the strip, catching a show, drinking cocktails, rollercoasters, shopping it has it all.

rarzy · 06/05/2021 14:17

That made me chuckle @20viona & want to go back asap, I need some frivolous fun!

Smartiepants79 · 06/05/2021 14:28

Vegas is fine.
Lots of shows and easily enough to do to entertain yourself for a few days.
I would not, however, fly all the way for such a short period of time.
I got serious jet lag flying to LA. It would be a waste of time for me.

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 06/05/2021 14:30

Bloody love Vegas. It really is like nowhere else. Great shows, great shopping, hotels are phenomenal, such a great selection of restaurants. Grand Canyon is a stones throw away.

I've been as a teenager, in my mid twenties (spent a week there -- that trip was expensive!) and for my 30th birthday. For my 30th we saw magicians, gambled, went to a couple of pool parties, shopped, ate ridiculously well and went to an impromptu Deadmau5 gig.

I would go if you can as part of a longer trip though -- last trip we started in Vegas for one night, drove to Phoenix (Scottsdale), drove to Palm Springs and then back to Vegas. Otherwise LA - Vegas - San Diego is a great one.

I have very little ones now so can only think back to those times fondly and look forward to hopefully going back for my 40th!

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 06/05/2021 14:31

Not sure what happened with there with strikethrough (unintentional!)

lap90 · 06/05/2021 14:47

We were in LA for two weeks and went to Vegas for 2/3 nights to mix things up.

I had a good time although love spending time in the states in general.

Hoping to go back for a girls trip next year!

pinkflask · 06/05/2021 14:54

I love it! It's like Blackpool, if Blackpool was ACE. Everything's bigger than life and so totally unashamed about it, unlike the Uk where everything is kind of small and crap and apologetic. Not really into the gambling but it's warm, everyone's friendly (and yeah, because you're paying for it...but it's better than sullen half-arsed service!), you're warmly welcomed in every bar and restaurant. You don't need to spend a fortune as everywhere has deals, coupons, happy hours.

Wegobshite · 06/05/2021 14:59

Well I wouldn’t do Vegas for 3-4 nights unless it was part of a longer trip
It’s a 12 hour flight and 7-8 hour time difference .that would absolutely take any fun or excitement out of it .
I would probably fall asleep in the casinos and get robbed 😂
I did two weeks several years ago in May it was really hot .We stayed at the Cosmopolitan Hotel and had an absolutely wicked time
I did the Grand Canyon both I think it’s south and west - in two separate coach trips
I did the Hoover Dam and went inside and right down to the bottom of the dam .
Went river rafting for a day and we did a boat trip on lake mead
I went and saw Celine Dione in concert 😂

You have to factor in the sales and local room tax fees which range from 30-60 US dollars a day per room
So what looks like a cheap holiday can work out expensive

MaryShelley1818 · 06/05/2021 14:59

It's funny to read all the you'll only love it if you love drinking/gambling/Blackpool comments when the thread is full of people who love the opposite and love Vegas!

I've been 3 times now, I love it so much the last trip we spent 10days there and I definitely wouldn't go for any less than a week.
I love the hotels, the pools, the shopping, amazing restaurants, world class shows, national parks, people watching, there's so much to see and do.
I do enjoy the occasional cocktail and maybe a few dollars on the slots but that's it, there's far more to see and do there.

cleckheatonwanderer · 06/05/2021 15:00

My memory of Vegas is seeing loads of stickers/cards strewn about with pornographic images on advertising prostitutes all over the streets.

Other than that it has some impressive hotels I guess.

lalafafa · 06/05/2021 15:00

Its great but the jet lag when you get back horrific.

Timper · 06/05/2021 15:03

Best place in the world. Can’t put my finger exactly on why I love it - it’s just incredible.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 06/05/2021 15:10

I adore Vegas, its so much fun!! I've been twice, for 6 days each time. The 2nd time it was the end of our honeymoon that included a roadtrip fro. SanFran, grand canyon, death valley etc.

There's amazing shows, look at the cirque shows, we saw ka, its astounding. I'm not a gambler, but I did enjoy the slots, lots of them have a minimum bet of only a penny, so you can have fun without breaking the bank. I won $25 on a 15c stake, I felt invincible, ha!

The museums are good too, especially the neon graveyard, so much vegas history there. I'd love to go back once our child is grown up, I don't really think its a family holiday destination though

MsSquiz · 06/05/2021 15:12

We've been to Vegas twice and we love it. We aren't gamblers (had 1 game of blackjack on our visit, to tick it off the list)

We've seen multiple Cirque du Soleil shows (One, Love, O, Zumanity and another that I can't remember the name off)

We've visited lots of lovely restaurants (Picasso & Harvest in the Bellagio, Wing Lei in the Wynn Encore, and others)

We did a helicopter & boat trip to the Grand Canyon, did the big red bus tour and spent the evening in downtown Las Vegas & Fremont Street (cheap drinks and lots of people watching!) we had a couple of pool days at the Encore (quiet day for us, but there are pool parties you can go to), visited the mob museum.

We didn't visit the neon graveyard or do the high roller, so they're things on my hit list for next time

PerveenMistry · 06/05/2021 15:13

I'm American and have been to Vegas at least 20 times though not in the last several years.

It has lost a lot of its charm, everything is corporate and designed to wring maximum money out of patrons. The visitors are seedier. You hardly see any middle aged couples -- it's young groups or solo weirdos or loud families with kids. No glamour. Little is left of the quirky old hotels and gambling parlors.

The surrounding desert is dreary and boring.

Given the distance involved for you, I'd say not worth it. Go to New York or Quebec or Seattle or San Francisco. Or Lake Tahoe if you really want gambling.

Or New Orleans; it's fun, eccentric and there's a nice, fun Harrah's hotel & casino in walking distance of Bourbon Street and all the tourist attractions.

minniemomo · 06/05/2021 15:13

Sorry I can't, its okay, if you are touring the sw of the USA it's worth a night or two but it didn't really do anything for me to be honest.

Interesting things include the hoover dam, Grand Canyon, Zion National Park ... Vegas it's self is just noisy, brash etc

MsSquiz · 06/05/2021 15:15

Forgot to say, the first time we went, it was for 4 days (started off 3 night in San Francisco, 2 nights in Yosemite, 1 night Death Valley and then to Vegas) and stayed at the Bellagio

2nd trip we were there for 6 nights following a friends wedding in North Carolina and we stayed at the Wynn Encore.

Both hotels were lovely, but I would gladly go back to the Bellagio every time! If you get a fountain view room, you can watch the show and have the music on the tv that goes alongside it

PerveenMistry · 06/05/2021 15:16

@19lottie82

I went about 6 years ago and thought I’d like it, but I still can’t make up my mind tbh. All I will say is that everything is REALLY EXPENSIVE.

I much prefer New York, it’s closer too.

Yeah, the days of all the freebies and cheap buffets are long gone.

Ericaequites · 06/05/2021 15:19

Go to Boston; it’s much nicer and more interesting than Vegas. You would be less than two hours from Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, two huge casinos with nightlife and fine dining. It’s a decent compromise.

Ericaequites · 06/05/2021 15:25

Boston is cold in November, but no worse than northern England.
Vegas shows the worst side of America. It’s in the middle of a desert, always hot and dull. The shows aren’t much compared to good rep. It’s full of gambling, prostitution, drinking, and hard drugs. The prices are high, and the food isn’t great.
Expecting a Quaker to like Vegas is a bit like taking a vegan to Simpson’s in the Strand. Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?

Huginamugg · 06/05/2021 15:33

Vegas is like marmite. You either love it or hate it.
We first went over 20 years ago as part of a coach trip. My thoughts were, not looking forward to Vegas, but get it over with and move on to the good stuff.
I was totally surprised to find we loved it. We're not gamblers but I just loved the ott hotels and we had no problem getting our time in. Looking round all the hotels can take up days.
We've been back 3 times since then and I'd go back tomorrow.
Stayed in The Stratosphere, budget hotel but ok. Another one which was a complete dive, now demolished. The Luxor (pyramid one) was good.
Last visit we treated ourselves to The Venetian which was amazing, but a bit of a waste of money as we were out all day and only basically slept there, but it was a great experience.
Our then 14 year old was with us and he loved it too. He did the roller coaster on top of New York, New York.
Did the day trip to the GC by bus. Awesome experience but tiring to do in a day.
Since then we've been back and as part of a road trip stayed 2 nights in The Red feather Lodge, a hotel a few miles from the canyon, where we got to experience sunrise and sunset.
I would go back to Vegas tomorrow given the chance.

Iwonder08 · 06/05/2021 15:49

Fantastic place, selection of good restaurants, excellent spa, helicopter trips to grand canyon.. Lots of fun even without gambling

mrsbyers · 06/05/2021 15:50
