To ask why I can't sit with you?

I keep seeing house makeovers recently with an illuminated sign saying "You can't sit with us."

What's that all about? It doesn't sound very homely.

Is it a quote from a TV show?

OP posts:

You may not be a teenager now but presumably you were a teenager at one point. Mean Girls is a really clever and funny commentary on teenage girls and their cliques and social structure, written by Tina Fey, of SNL fame, who was mid-30s at the time (she’s 50 now) and played the teacher.
It isn’t just for teenagers
Why would I see 12 Years a Slave when I’m not a liberated 1850s slave? Why would I see Dunkirk when I’m not a WW2 soldier who was evacuated from the beaches? Etc

Great post, completely agree

MichelleScarn · 05/05/2021 23:27

@Tribblers and @PeskyRooks this is my mug at work, for students and new starts who get it, they are liked automatically!

Also love 10 Things I Hate About You, can't quote as well though

NerrSnerr · 05/05/2021 23:39

@chloeb8

Not sure as to why somebody would have this sign in their house... it seems incredibly immature?!
It's just popular culture.

I can imagine it's because the person loves the film and the sign makes them smile as it's a reminder.

I have a Sully from Monster's Inc photo frame on my bedside table. It reminds me of a happy time in my life when I saw the film with good friends.

PeskyRooks · 05/05/2021 23:47

@MichelleScarn that mug rules!

TheSmallAssassin · 05/05/2021 23:54

Not read the whole thread, but I love Mean Girls, it's one of my husband's favourites and we've watched it a couple of times as a family. I only realised the last time I watched it that it was based on the book Queen Bees and Wannabes, which I've seen recommended here a few times.

Wanderlust20 · 06/05/2021 00:28

Just really want to watch this film again now, it's genius! OP, please report back once you've watched! I wonder if it's one of those things where, if you watch it later, you won't get the hype..?

MindyStClaire · 06/05/2021 05:09

Exactly, I'm 37 and probably only saw it for the first time in my early 30s as I'm a Tina Fey fan. Just because it's about teenagers doesn't mean it's only for teenagers.

Anyone who likes Mean Girls should also try 30 Rock and her book Bossypants if you haven't.

I think I may watch after reading this thread some of the lines have made me laugh, even without context. I also enjoyed 10 things I hate about you. Clueless slightly less, as I found the character irritating (I have the same problem with Alexis from Schitts Creek). However, despite enjoying them I didn’t identify or recognise anything from them from my own experiences.

Despite having been a teenage girl myself I didn’t experience anything like this at school. I went to a girls school. Everyone arrived in their friendship groups from primary, we all just got on with it. We turned up, did our time and left.

RosaLuxemb0urg · 06/05/2021 08:59

Harry Potter who? Is that a nickname for Prince Harry?

VestaTilley · 06/05/2021 09:00

It’s from the awful film “Mean Girls”. For some reason it’s become a bit of a cult classic. I’ve no idea why; it’s crap.

Why anyone would want such a mean and nasty slogan on their walls is beyond me; particularly if you have children living with you. Horrible.

In your opinion it's crap.

Mean Girls is not my favourite teen movie but I can see why it's so popular and I think it's still a good film (in my opinion of course).

It's a cult classic because a lot of people think it's a very good film. It's not that hard to work out.

Love it!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/05/2021 09:26

How have you not heard of it, never mind not seen it??!!

I'm another who has no idea what it is

Mean Girls hasn't just suddenly popped back into existence, it's a huge part of pop-culture. 'Stop trying to make fetch happen' or 'it's October 3rd' is no different from 'he's her lobster' or 'we were on a break!'. Nope! Not a clue.

How much does that dehumanise me?

Quaagars · 06/05/2021 11:05

How much does that dehumanise me?

Eh? Confused

I’d say you were pretty lucky and that it’s pretty unusual to have never experienced any clique-y teen girl behaviour at all. Obviously movies like Mean Girls are satirising it to the extreme but there’s always some element there. The fact you’ve said there were different friendship groups probably points to it- the popular group, the sport group, the “nerd” group, the alternative group etc.

It's a tone of 'voice' and nerd humour thing @Quaagars

Don't worry about it Grin

No, he’s a Kardashian.
AryaStarkWolf · 06/05/2021 11:17

“Your moms chest hair!”

But it does amuse me that on a thread cheerleading for a series many have not heard of means you can miss other viewpoints and dry humor you may not have experienced.

Dehumanise / othering. From the comment I quoted How have you not heard of it, never mind not seen it??!!

But then I suppose it is a bit OTT... using a lack of knowledge about something that depicts/celebrates the evil/mean side of human nature to further 'other' someone!

Maybe I've just been reading too many heavy books!

Papadontpreachimintroubledeep · 06/05/2021 11:23

This thread is the reason I watched mean girls again last night.. it never gets old!
Even my dh likes it and he's a moody old fart!

Luckyelephant1 · 06/05/2021 11:24

Whatever, I'm getting cheese fries.

Yes, please take offence at a tongue in cheek comment about completing missing a highly-known to many (but obviously not all) piece of pop culture. It's obviously because you've been busy reading Shakespeare entire works, in Latin followed by some Ulysses to lighten it up.
