To ask why I can't sit with you?

I keep seeing house makeovers recently with an illuminated sign saying "You can't sit with us."

What's that all about? It doesn't sound very homely.

Is it a quote from a TV show?

The fact you’ve said there were different friendship groups probably points to it- the popular group, the sport group, the “nerd” group, the alternative group etc.

Not really. It was more to do with background and ethnicity. All the Asian girls sat together as did the Afro Caribbean girls, there were about 6 from the council tower bocks who moussed their hair and then there were about 10 mc white girls who all just acted the same as each other. No one was sporty or into anything in particular. I liked grunge music and a friend liked heavy metal, the rest were stock Aiken and Waterman all the way! No one segregated themselves based on music or sports. There were no popular groups at all. We all just hunkered down and rode it out together. I think there was a cameraderie that we were all in it the same and to just keep our heads down and leave.

@TheGirlWhoLived

Ohhh I always tell the kids “make good choices” when they go in the school gates.

Legally blonde is another great one- snaps for TheGirlWho

That’s pitch perfect Grin

Love that film

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/05/2021 11:29

That's my point @BrumBoo

My whole point!

Soubriquet · 06/05/2021 11:38

“Made out with a hotdog?! Oh my god that was one time “

I’m struggling to see your point too @CuriousaboutSamphire - there are cultural reference point that are difficult to miss, even if you’ve never seen the original source. So I know who Kim Kardashian is and I know who Christian Grey is despite never having seen a single second of either (or reading, in the case of fifty shades). Especially because you’re clearly no stranger to the internet, it is a bit unusual to have absolutely no knowledge of ‘we were on a break’ or where it comes from.

All I'm seeing of your point is that you're one of the minority who doesn't engage in any manner of pop culture (fair enough, don't particularly care), but are quite willing to try and derail a thread over your odd offence about being in this minority, over a comment not even directed at yourself.

People can express surprise at another adult having never heard of certain references or media, especially considering the modern age of social media and sharing, without the need to regress it into a way to be offended. Your tastes are only highbrow, that's great for you. Not sure what else you're hoping to get from a subject you don't care for?

ComDummings · 06/05/2021 12:29

The limit does not exist!

AryaStarkWolf · 06/05/2021 12:30

Heathers was the darker original Mean Girls

Iloveyou3x · 06/05/2021 12:35

How many times can you watch mean girls?

The limit does not exist!

MorrisZapp · 06/05/2021 12:41

My local tat/live love laugh emporium has a sign for sale made of metal and only slightly smaller than a standard street sign. It says 'not skinny, not bothered' and it costs forty five quid.

I'm not sure that big metal signs are the best way to signal how low your botheration levels are.

Famousinlove · 06/05/2021 12:52

I don't play it like Shaggy, you'll know it was me, because the next time you see her she'll be like 'ahhh Kevin G!!'

Luckyelephant1 · 06/05/2021 12:52

In answer to the OP original question about the sign, there's a bazillion 'quirky' quote signs around these days either in houses, cafes, bars etc. Even those blackboard signs outside pubs and cafes now need a unique quote or poem on then. All with the sole intent of being Instagrammable which is therefore free advertising. Live laugh love has morphed massively over the last few years. As much as I love Mean Girls I wouldn't have that sign in my kitchen though. Maybe if I had a really funky dressing room or something.

MsTSwift · 06/05/2021 17:28

For us any film that the whole family actually enjoy (Dh and I mid 40s girls of 12 and 14) is a rare and precious thing! Mean Gotks is one such film

MsTSwift · 06/05/2021 17:28

Girls

MilkchopsMcgee · 06/05/2021 17:51

10 things I hate about you is also amazing

You can be overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed but can you just be whelmed?

I think you can in Europe?
winniestone37 · 06/05/2021 18:04

@PeridotEyes why on earth do you care? It’s other people’s houses. The weirdest thing of all is how much it bothers you.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 06/05/2021 18:08

@DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou

Oh God, it's akin to those stupid eyelashes on cars, isn't it? Envy
I like thoseBlush
steff13 · 06/05/2021 18:11

Raise your hand is you've been personally victimized by Regina George. 🙋‍♀️

Anytime I say it, my kids all raise their hands.

musingloud · 06/05/2021 18:35

@NiceGerbil

'Mean Girls hasn't just suddenly popped back into existence, it's a huge part of pop-culture. 'Stop trying to make fetch happen' or 'it's October 3rd' is no different from 'he's her lobster' or 'we were on a break!'.'

???!!!

I only recognise the last one!

I'm 47. I'm guessing my parents wouldn't have a clue about any of this tbh Grin

Me too! And I am 48!

I remember it when it first came out, really liked it. I had no idea it had sparked all these memes though!

Spectrumofhumanlife · 06/05/2021 18:40

Mean Girls is one of my all time favourite films. I often say ‘you can’t sit with us’ to DH when I’m pretending to be annoyed with him about something. I was 20 when it was released!

musingloud · 06/05/2021 18:42

And!! The Outsiders!

OMG! I love the Outsiders! Absolutely loved it!

'Isn't there somewhere where's there's people? Just plain, ordinary p-p-p people?'
'FOr JoHNNNNNNYYYYY!!!!!'

Lostsoul231 · 06/05/2021 19:31

I wouldn’t have a sign of this quote personally but I guess if it’s your favourite film ever, why the hell not?
I only watched Mean Girls for the first time last week (on the recommendation of my 19 year old son who’d seen it as a young teen), and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Can see why it’s a popular film

Josette77 · 06/05/2021 19:37

43 and love Mean Girls!!! It's a total classic.

MarkUp · 06/05/2021 19:45

She doesn’t even go here!

I wish I could bake a cake made of rainbows and smiles and we'd all eat it and be happy.

I love this film 🤣
