To ask why I can't sit with you?

I keep seeing house makeovers recently with an illuminated sign saying "You can't sit with us."

What's that all about? It doesn't sound very homely.

Is it a quote from a TV show?

I'm also amazed that people haven't seen Mean Girls!

It's a great film.

The answer is, there is no limit!

SelkieFly · 05/05/2021 21:30

@Labyrinthian

How has nobody yet discussed that the Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) did in fact use a quote from Mean Girls in his big covid address to the nation ... If it's good enough for Leo... (Sky news even did a story on it)
Omg yes, that was hilarious I thought. I laughed.
laudete · 05/05/2021 21:34

How many of you have ever felt personally victimised by Regina George?

LegoPoliceman · 05/05/2021 21:35

I've seen it. It was alright, but nothing special. More funny than a lot of high school films, fair enough, but I never remember there being a massive hype over it.

Quaagars · 05/05/2021 21:36

Never heard of it. Late 40s, don't have a teen dd

See, I don't think age or whether has a teen dd has anything to do with it?
I'm late 40s, and have no teen dd.
Still one of my favourite films.
Think it must more come down to personal film preferences

Devlesko · 05/05/2021 21:36

The first time I saw it was with my 17 year old dd. Although, I'd heard of it when 30 year old ds1 was younger.
It's a big thing with late teens and students.
I imagine my dd rooms will have a few of these items, along with friends themed stuff.

Xtraincome · 05/05/2021 21:37

After reading this thread, I have informed DH we are watching Mean Girls as our weekend movie! He has never watched it all the way through and this thread had reminded me of it's awesomeness!!!

Can't wait for DDs to be a bit older and watch it with us.

EvilOnion
I'm mid 30's and never seen Mean Girls, have heard of it but wouldn't have known any quotes 🤷‍♀️ I'm fine with being an "uncool" Mum if that's the case.. my 15yo throws a lot of verbal shit at me but that's not one I've heard from himyet🤣

Oh no, the "cool mom" quotes are a joke from the film. Grin

The mum of Regina (the head mean girl) wants to be cool and part of her teenage daughters gang. She tries to dress like them and use thier slang.
But, she then says "I'm not a regular mom, I'm a cool mom"
Thus negating her coolness

I may have complicated the joke, Grin But hopefully it makes sense.

" 'we were on a break!'."

That's from Friends.
I've never seen Mean Girls. Why would I? I'm not a teenager.

mongoosebaby · 05/05/2021 21:54

See, I thought everyone had seen Mean Girls. So when a new colleague started in our office, I greeted her with 'on Wednesdays we wear pink ' with a smile and a wink to try and break the ice. Cue blank looks all around from new and old colleagues alike 🤣 Still, wasn't as bad as the time I assumed everyone has seen Father Ted and quipped that 'the money was just resting in my account' in a finance audit meeting...

"Still, wasn't as bad as the time I assumed everyone has seen Father Ted and quipped that 'the money was just resting in my account' in a finance audit meeting..."

Father Ted was on TV for years so totally different.
I don't go to the cinema much and don't remember Mean Girls being on normal TV so I don't think it's the same thing at all.

I WANT MY PINK SHIRT BACKKK!!!

midnightstar66 · 05/05/2021 22:04

My birthday is 3rd of October: In the last 15 odd years whenever anyone had asked I've always answered 'it's October 3rd' you can always tell the people that know 😆

Sally872 · 05/05/2021 22:05

Just watched Mean Girls for the first time in a while after reading this earlier. Still a great movie. Thanks everyone!

You may not be a teenager now but presumably you were a teenager at one point. Mean Girls is a really clever and funny commentary on teenage girls and their cliques and social structure, written by Tina Fey, of SNL fame, who was mid-30s at the time (she’s 50 now) and played the teacher. It isn’t just for teenagers. Why would I see 12 Years a Slave when I’m not a liberated 1850s slave? Why would I see Dunkirk when I’m not a WW2 soldier who was evacuated from the beaches? Etc
voovayclickwot · 05/05/2021 22:08

I now associate ‘you can’t sit with us’ with excluding people (sexism, racism etc).

There is no way I would have that in the home.

Google doesn't explain what this means. Can you please?
HannaHat · 05/05/2021 22:11

I love Mean Girls ❤️
Regina screaming when she realises the “weird nutrition bars” have made her put on weight is my favourite scene 😂

3Britnee · 05/05/2021 22:13

I'll be watching mean girls tomorrow now then. And then white chicks.

Quaagars · 05/05/2021 22:15

What's being a teenager got to do with it?
I was a teenager early 90s way before Mean Girls came out in 2004, still doesn't mean I don't think it's fetch though
